Welcome to Chrono Trigger's Final Destination. Literally. This stage is modeled after the last battlefield of the game, where you meet and defeat the final boss.
In the game, this area is a distortion in time, where the party can see into all of the game's time periods at once. This allowed me to use stuff from all over the game and give every era equal attention.
First of all, the fighting platform: it was cobbled together from pieces of the Black Omen, and it actually looks rather pretty in action.
Secondly, the stage itself: in the first area, Lavoids fly past the platform followed by meteorites that contain random sprites from the game's maps. Then Lavos's pocket dimension appears, followed by the Time Warp itself. In the far distance you can see the Time Freeze, and Lavos erupting from a galaxy. Both versions of the game's planet also make an appearance -- the colorful one you get in the game's good ending, and the lifeless gray one where the Future Refused to Change.
The second area is probably familiar to anyone who fought Chrono Trigger's final boss. I had to create the colored lines myself since there were no decent sprite rips of the background used in the game. Unfortunately I couldn't re-create the gradients in the stage, so the lines are stuck being different shades of green. As our Black Omen platform passes through this tunnel, they go from yellow-green to blue-green, and finally...
...We meet the big guy himself in the third area, which is effectively the "heart" of the distortion. As such, images from all the time periods make an appearance.
Moving on, we encounter a tunnel that includes every important PC and NPC sprite in the game in front of the End of Time, along with that ominous game over message. You can't really see it, but there are also translucent overlays of the Apocalypse in 1999 AD as well.
The final area is the time travel tunnel. This should be a familiar sight to anyone who played past Lucca's Telepod in the game.
As a side note: three pictures alone do not do this stage justice. I urge you to try it out for yourself to see all the cool stuff I wasn't able to show off here.
