Title: Project R: The BV revival project
Post by: Nezha B. Rose on December 07, 2013, 03:02:27 PM

Welcome to the official Project R thread!

(http://i.imgur.com/f2gLNDc.png)What is this?
Project R is a community project. Our goal lies in making old gold new again. By merely using the visual aids offered by texture hacks with broken downloads, they must recreated by adding a "modern" touch to it (such as fixing the hack, adding details, etc.) while still maintaining the idea of what the hack supposed to be, offering both a pac and a pcs files and giving a nice CPS and BP with it.

Can I join?
You CAN but the rules are a bit strict...

Rules in choosing/making:
  • Check the "Hacks in Need of Your Help" spoiler in the Brawl Vault Community Support (http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=38592.msg776858#msg776858), look for the character (or stage) with a broken download (preferably texture, no imports unless they are recolors) that dates from 2012 or less and has more than 100 downloads (or they are good looking) that you would like to recreate. (you can search for broken hacks from other websites too, but make sure they were made between years 2012 and 2010, the download count rule does not apply here)
  • Copy that link paste it here with a picture of it to "Claim" it. The link and your name will be posted in a "claimed section" so none else can do said hack as well.
  • Make the hacks as close as possible to the original, but if you find something wrong (commonly saturation, or lacks something) you may alter it, if a part of a hack's body is not shown in the pictures... go creative.

Rules in uploading:
  • Make sure you have a CPS and BP included in your download as well as the pac and pcs, if not, we would make them for you (I'm slow at it though), or I can teach you... it not hard to learn the process.
  • The third preview picture must have the insignia layered on it to identify it as one of the project.
  • Give credit to the maker of the previous version, plus give a link of the previous hack in your description box.

Update!
-You can now make custom poses for your character's menu assets, only rule is to make 'em nice!
-You can now use a "preview card" instead of the basic in game pictures to show off fanciness.

Usually, this makes lazy people run in the opposite direction.

This seems really nifty. I'll try to get into this. I can make CSP and BPs pretty good myself.
I'll look for a few old hacks and see whats what.

I also like the phrase "Making old gold new again"

Edit: With the holidays around the corner I think its appropriate to give Santa's CEO a little attention. Claimed

Added to the list, thanks guys!

You know, when I started modding I really wanted some textures that had their broken links... its sad that I couldn't do anything about it.
Now since I have the experience, I decided to fix that. And so I decided to start this little project in witch brings back those hacks and polish them into new ones.

Speaking of witch:

These where added to the family.

Now all I have to do is to fix the OP format, but the claimed section merges with the character and introduction when I tried... I couldn't even reserve a post since it also merges, anyone knows how to fix that?

Noting this when I get a new computer, StackSmash has some textures that are missing, but a lot of the images are gone so we might need to guess what they looked like.

Yeah, that is a problem... if a texture with a broken download has broken pictures it can't be reproduced unless:

-> You knew or remembered what it looked like.

-> If a texture is part of a series (for example, phazon, nebula green, or mango/maritime/mirage/mars/minty/rainbow) you can use other characters hacks to guide you in making this new one.

-> Or if you are lucky enough... finding a picture or a video including said character...

Reviving hacks using these procedures will be an amazing feat.

Guessing is not recommended, the results could be anything that might not follow what the texture was... and that goes against the goal of the project.

There are some shiny pokemon textures that could use some redoing, like pikachu and jiggz.

Redoing? Don't you mean restoring?
We recreate hacks with broken links, not fix the existing the ones with functioning links.

But if you meant restoring:
Jiggs has only one shiny hack, and it has a working download.

There is also one entry for pikachu shiny. It has no pics to use as base, we don't know if the maker of said hack had pikachu wearing a hat or something making it a guessing game. But most of us know how shiny pikachu looks like, so anybody can just make 'em and upload easily.

Later I'll check with the rest of the pokemon cast and see if I can find a shiny with a broken download link.

Added this (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=6170) to the claim list while searching for shiny pikachu.

Found 3 more worth doing in Bowser's vault.

This is a Classic hack that definitely needs to be brought back. I used to play this Bowser all the time I had no idea it was even on this site.

I also might move these textures to the "Wii-U" inspired model if I feel like it.

I also might move these textures to the "Wii-U" inspired model if I feel like it.

Sounds cool, especially since that model doesn't desync wifi.

I dont know if its Wifi-safe but if anything I'll add both models so people can choose.

Well, this model (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=34101) says its wifi safe.

Adding two models is a splendid idea, I mean, if you are willing to do the extra work... but I'm pretty sure its rewarding since there isn't much wii-U bowser model retextures around.

Hey Im having a bit of a styles clash.
I want to remake the Darbus Bowser
http://s214.photobucket.com/user/josewii/media/al_090927_1554.jpg.html (http://s214.photobucket.com/user/josewii/media/al_090927_1554.jpg.html)

But Darbus' stomach pattern looks much different than on the Bowser texture hack.
http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090529054202/zelda/images/c/c4/Darbus.png (http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090529054202/zelda/images/c/c4/Darbus.png)
So my question is;

Should try to remake the original texture design or remake it to mtach Darbus's original body paint?
I like the original texture but I dont know if it should still be called Darbus.

That is a good question, I've updated the rules to fit this dilema.

...they must recreated by adding a "modern" touch to it (such as fixing the hack, adding details, etc.) while still maintaining the idea of what the hack supposed to be...

with that you can choose between reconstructing the hack exactly how it is, or improve on its concept without affecting its main idea.

That is your choice, if it was up to me, I'll make it as close to Darbus as possible. Therefore people can actually understand/see its Darbus. The original is cool, but I don't see that's Darbus, but just an awesome looking goron. Its all up to you really.

If anybody else would like to make an opinion on this and the rule change, please, do so.

So i decided to make the color scheme more like Darbus but im afraid that I strayed to far from the original texture.

I may need to make another one and have this one stand alone.

You can make the restored version for the Project R and then upload this one for your own if you want too. He looks great, but as you said, it far from the original.... I am anxious to use that texture so please, do uploade it when its ready :D

Also, yeah, it was hard for me to upload a couple of hack today, I think this website still has some issues.

Yeah, I also though it was a weird idea to make this. But the world does move with weird ideas doesn't it? XD

Even if your not a texture person, participating in this project will help you improve in texturing. It did for me. So if you have any questions, be sure to ask. Everyone is welcome.

One of the previews on the original download shows the default parasol, so I will make a new one, and I will include the 3 alternate colors

Here's a piece of advice, for better results, use the newest version of Rosalina witch I'm assuming you are already doing. I did so with Roy using the pm version.

Edit: My computer broke down, so I won't be doing any hacks any time soon, however, I will leave this place updated daily. No worries about that.

interesting project!
I'll have to design something for this when I get back into hacking. :3

do you want hacks following my (tourney legit) standards??:
- wifi-legit
- single-slot model imports (other slots still usable) (patched only over cBliss slots)
- logic edits (if any) MUST follow the moves

or do you want stuff like advanced logic-edits (PSA) and such??

also, yes you should share this on SWF! :3
(let it build up a little before-hand though so as to not make the mistake I made)

Thanks @Tcll! Glad to have you in the family!

interesting project!

do you want hacks following my (tourney legit) standards??:
- wifi-legit
- single-slot model imports (other slots still usable) (patched only over cBliss slots)
- logic edits (if any) MUST follow the moves

All of this is great! As long if it restores the hack to its former glory its perfect. People aim for wifi safe stuff alot, and if its compatible with PM and Brawl is even better still.

or do you want stuff like advanced logic-edits (PSA) and such??

hmm...
You know, when I started this project, I wanted Project R to restore stuff beyond Characters, and have it classified with different colored insignias:
Red for Texture
Blue for Stage
Green for PSA
Yellow for Brstm

I scratched that idea half way, but I still hope for this to be possible when this project gets the gain it needs.

Any type of restoration is welcome, even if it isn't wifi or tourney safe.  So if you could do these advanced logic-edits, it could help this project and KC-MM a ton.

(let it build up a little before-hand though so as to not make the mistake I made)

Good point, lets see...
I believe when the hack count reaches 50, it shall be shared with the other hacking forums.

Sadly, we need more visual aids to do these restorations, the cps itself shows only the front of him... but, it is one nice hack, if someone knows the creator's name, I'll be glad to do this.. (try asking in the SJS thread for it)

Its seems like quite the challenge, I'll wait a bit and see if some else is going to accept some lessons on how to do this. If not, I'll take it once my request to-do list is done.

Sure, all custom previewing style are permitted as long as it has the insignia on it.

Edit: And ofcourse, as long as it doesn't break the Brawl Vault rules about previewing a hack.

You can still challenge yourself in revamping it and make it more modern, (you claimed and started the mod when it was still broken, so you can still do so), or you can try another.

"when it was still broken". Does this mean it that the link will possibly get fixed or you mean it in a way of "fixed" for us? Sorry for getting a bit off topic here.

Sometimes, people restore the hack that was claimed, or mediafire "unblocks it"  if a certain time has passed. That is why I decided to only restore hacks that dates 2012 and below. Not 2014-2013 and below.

The mediafire one happened with the Dark Ike upload.

It's based off a Iodrome from Monster Hunter

Can you guys remake this? I personal believe this looks really cool and Yoshi doesn't have that many textures to begin with; it would be pretty awesome to see a remake.

Alright the days have passed, I'll work with this one.

I really appreciate it Scout! If I have any questions I will ask!
(also I am working on that texture tonight)
Actually how do you do the custom poses mentioned in your rules?

Post Merge: May 19, 2014, 05:01:55 PM
Okay I have the textures done, all I need to do is the CSPs and BPs. Tell me what you think.

Hmmm... lets see...

Well I like that you took the metalic look of his mouth out, you might wanna fix the cheecks a bit. I can see some lines around them.

You can make custom poses using two tactics:

By brawl box (make a pose yourself by previewing the model of you mod, then take a screenshot with a transparent background and edit it using photoshop or gimp)

Or use the god's tears tactic... I'm learning that right now, so I can't tell much about it.

Well scout the reason I added the lines is because the original had them so first thing I thought was a retro look.  I am using Paint.Net Other than that I will try to mess around with BrawlBox thanks

Scout you said I should come here of I find hacks that can be revived. So that's what I'm doing now.

Here's the hack that I made back from scratch in the community support.
http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=96 (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=96)

Here is the new link for the revived texture.

Hopefully, I gave you proper information to make this texture a officially revived.

Oh my! I need to mention two things...

One, you gonna make your own upload of it.  Check the Op for rules and check the other entries for reference. Read a few pages of the thread to see how this works.

Second, I just noticed it now... this entry was already restored:

Check here: http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=35233 (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=35233)

Remmember: This thread is dedicated to LEGALLY restore mods, what you did is unpermitted since you gave a link of a mod you did replacing the mod he did, he now earns the credits for something he did not do, and you do not recieve them. To make a hack completely revived is to look for reported hacks with broken links that fit the qualifications of the rules on the OP and remake them using visual aids, then upload them with CPS and BP, crediting the owner of the original, and adding a link of the original on the description.

Why this much hasle? This is the only way a mod can successfully be restored without problems:
  • You get the credits for something you did, and aqcuire experience, while the owner is credited.
  • The communitty gets the mod. And a bit extra.

You are a bit lost at the moment, any questions, be free to ask. Just read the OP, its the reason of its existence.

PS; Don't mind the typos, I'm on mobile, no auto-correct.

Ok. So I found a texture that was made in 2010 and has above one hundred downloads, however, there are no pictures, and the download links Are broken (obviously.) So I have no idea what it looks like. What should I do about this?

Since I'm back, I had the time to do the texture I claimed, however, one thing prevents me from submitting them.

If I submit them, who gets the credit?  I mean who gets to hold the actual hack?
Do I get DL counts for them, or are they given to you, But I'm given credit?
I have no idea how it works.

Okay, lets use this project R entry I've uploaded:
http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=36312 (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=36312)

Notice that I made a separate upload of this mod instead of replacing the original, and gave a credit and a link of the original. That means, he doesn't get a download count, only you do because you made it!

But why credit instead of a collab? Simple, one cannot simply collab a user that did nothing hands on involving the creation of the mod. Therefore, crediting him for the visual aid is enough.

Now you are not forced to do it like this, you can collab the user if you want too, just keep in mind that logic I stated earlier... and some user's dislike being collabed for something they did not do.

New section added with all the requests, its a nice touch for those who seeks an audience for their hacks.

So guys, hows progress? Remember if you do not wish to do the hack you claimed, you can always un-claim it, I know life may interfere much, or you all moved up to more personal or popular projects, and you might not have the time to recreate others people stuff. So its ok! I'm doing the same thing, sorta...

Me? Don't have a wii currently, so I'm limited to stages right now.
