Hello! I'm Program, and I work exclusively in textures. I do this because I don't like the idea of downloading 3dsMax when I'm not a student...and I certainly am not going to pay $20,000 for it. Some people might say "Who needs textures when there are importers!?" or "You can only do so much with textures". I admit that only so much can be done with textures, pre-existing shaders, vertexing, and such, however, I believe that people under estimate what you can do with textures. A simple example is my old (old as in it needs to be improved since last I worked on it) Midna texture.
P.S. Nowhere near perfect I know. I just wanted to show that simply cleaning a texture up can make it look a bit better.
My goal is to make new textures, make old ones better, and add lots of small details to make any texture better.

Some of my current textures will be below (I have a few more on my vault). I will be adding progress updates in the thread itself.

Current Wips:
Smash Wii U Peach 90%
Hyrule Warriors Zelda 75%
Joker Solid Snake 20%
Ridley Hunter ZSS 15%
Captain ZSS 15%

P.S. If anyone wants proof about how much I care about a texture being perfect take a look at this. Also, any and all feedback is welcome.

Yay! Someone else here who knows the potential of textures! :D
I myself have been working on recolors, but they're still in-progress, but they'll be epic when done. :)

Btw, I absolutely LOVE your Midna retexture, and it would be even awesome-er if the normal Midna helmet was on the new texture! ;D

Thanks! That Midna texture is from quite a while ago so I may just make a new helmet texture from scratch. That way it's exactly how I want it. I'll also be making the skin highlights less bright, adding some sort of Spec map or Env, and looking into if it's possible to make her lights glow in game.

Smash Wii U Peach progress/preview. So long story short I'm making this because I don't like the one the Smash3 team made. No offense to them, theirs was just to inaccurate and messy for my liking. This is not finished and even what you see will be tweaked.(http://i.imgur.com/NG1H33F.png)

Thanks a lot! I just hope it looks good in game.

Update! I've had this part finished for a long time. I'm not pleased with the colour of the pink jewel, however, I can't do anything about. Sadly, it will have to do.

Nice crown! Though, it could look better in parts, I agree. Why can't you change the color of the pink, though? She only has one pink gem, that's it, and it's in her TextureA texture.

IMO, It should have the shine on the crevices instead of the tips, the pink should be less purplish, and the blue and gold should be slightly brighter.

Oh I definitely know where the texture for her jewels are... I've been working on this texture for a long time. I can tell you where any part of Peach's texture is from memory and probably their size too (I don't know if that's sad or funny). Anyways, as to why I can't make the jewel more pink is because of the Ref texture -
(http://i.imgur.com/wEJsUDY.jpg)
The Ref texture is dark so it makes the jewel look purple. Making the ref lighter makes the blue way to bright and washed out. Also, I can't make a separate ref texture for just the pink jewel because all four crown jewels are the same object. As for making things brighter usually the stage lighting makes whatever you have brighter, so that problem may already be solved.

Post by: windhunter7 on June 10, 2015, 06:09:03 PM
What if you lighten the Ref texture but darken the blue gem in her TextureA texture? Wouldn't that work to make it lighter-colored of a pink? Also, how purplish it is would be the hue, not the light; try a color closer to this for the pink to make it less purplish(but do tweak this color a bit; I couldn't find the exact color I was looking for, and I'm too lazy to make the color myself and then upload it, so that's the closest I could find to the pure color of her Wii U crown)

I'm actually already working on a Hyrule warriors Zelda texture. It's the one I'll be working on after Peach. I haven't thought about Link yet though. If you have any ideas feel free to share them.

What about a Hyrule Warriors colored Link? That'd be super-awesome, and with the Brawl model, it might even be cooler than the actual Hyrule Warriors model.

I don't know about Hyrule warriors Link, iwantgame's are on my build already and they're one of my favorite imports ever. Maybe a Link we don't have on the vault yet or one that needs an update... If there even are any like that.

Update time! I got the back almost finished. Keep in mind I don't have a picture of Peach's back but I'm pretty sure this is what it looks like on the Wii U version. Not that you really see it anyways. Her hair pretty much always covers it.

After Peach is released I'll make a tutorial if anyone wants it, but for now lets just say I first discovered this in a trophy and was able to implement it in Peach.
So Peach is pretty much in her final stage before recolours so the next picture you see of her will be in game. In the mean time I thought I'd show a bit of my Hyrule Zelda. Keep in mind this is not final.(http://i.imgur.com/aZ67o8x.png)

I haven't added an update in the past few day because Peach is being a professional pain when it comes to getting her colours right ingame. Also, Smash 4 DLC is the greatest thing ever!

Update time! One of the small details about Peach that annoyed me was her golf club... It looks awful.
I made it chrome and the head has two different reflections on it (they're a little hard to see here).

Also, can anyone explain this. Peach's golf "hilt"? and head both use textures from melee. That doesn't sound that weird until you do research and realize they both are unused textures in melee left in Plum's trophy.

If you have any suggestions on what to do with the tennis racquet I'll gladly listen, because I couldn't really think of anything to do with it. If the file size allows me I'll be doing this for the frying pan
(http://i.imgur.com/XsdkMSZ.png)

Update Time! New Crown! The crown jewels are not going to be that colour I'm still adjusting those; I also might consider making the design outline a bit darker. I changed it because Nintendo's render doesn't match what it looks like in game. (http://i.imgur.com/npYui1P.jpg)

I do like the color of Nintendo's render better than the in-game color for the crown-part, though, but that's just IMO. Also, IMO, the frying pan looks weird like that and it should be all one color like the original, but silver instead of bluish.

Also, I have an idea for the tennis racket: The purple part-silver; the silver part-the same color silver; the handle-part with the brown on it-I'm not sure exactly the color that would look cool on it, but probably something like this:

I'm not sure if I can do that for the racquet since I'm trying to make this look as much as possible like the Wii U version. I did try to give the racquet some shine but it just looked dumb. I'm going to try to give it a new handle texture though, and it will probably be pretty close to the colour you have. The pan texture is based off the new design actually.

No it's not just a spec map it works a little bit differently. If you collab me you can use whatever you want, however, I'd really love to make some textures that look more like the actual artwork for you if want them. Also, oddly enough I'm working on a Mario myself based on the 80's cartoon. It's just a Brawlbox edit but I think it'll be pretty funny when it's done.

Loving that Mario, also loved the cartoon. lol
Anyways, for Artwork Mario, there isn't much to go on since he doesn't have any detail.

I do see that my eye texture needs a little tweaking, but other than that, I don't see what else to do with the texture besides giving them lots of detail, or no detail. Since he still uses Brawl Mario's texture mapping, his textures can be replaced with ease.

Mind you I just did that last night so there are still a lot of things that need to be done. I also thought that maybe adding a spec to his shirt, shoes, hat, mustache, and pants will make him look more like the old artwork. For some reason they thought certain parts of him should be g(http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/143/193/cad-20080602-358b1.jpg?1309710446)y looking.

Update Time!    Midna's GLOW
So with the help of a certain something already in brawl, and quite a bit of tinkering I was able to do this.
The best part is that I didn't add any objects. The model there is the exact one you can download from the vault.

I think that you should move the specmap of Peach's jewels down a bit.

The specmap on the Wii U one is like in the center, but the Brawl one is very high up.
I really like your work though. You're only using BrawlBox, right?

Yeah, I do need to fix that now that you mention it. Thanks for pointing that out! Peach's crown uses a Ref texture for the jewels so I may just make a new one from scratch.
As to if I'm only using BrawlBox do you mean to do the texture stuff, the vertex stuff, or the shader stuff? I don't use 3dsmax so anything you see on here was either a model already on the vault or one I vertexed in BB.

No problem! Yeah that was what I wondered, 3DS Max doesn't work for me for some reason so I'm doing the same.

                                                                                   Possibly Important?

Update Time!!! Okay, this took a lot of work but I think it's going to prove pretty useful. To my knowledge the only way to make Samus' visor glow is to make the visor a separate object and to null said objects normals. This is how the PMDT did it in 3.6. I think I've figured out how to do it without any model altering... My Samus is on the left Brawl's is on the right. The lights are added purely by shaders and materials so it can be applied to any Samus model on the vault. This may have already been accomplished, but I haven't seen it.
So, can anyone tell me if they've see someone do this before or is this something that's new? Also, do you think this will prove to be as useful as I think it will?

Yeah, I've never seen it before either! Just imagine every Samus model on the vault could now have lights without any model edits.

I'll be making a tutorial and be supplying the necessary resources. However, under the condition that whoever uses it has to collab me. I know callab is lame, however, I've put a lot of work into these and I still have more to do. I have to make sure I've fixed all the bugs and I haven't even looked to see if the metals work yet.

One of the main pluses to these is that I think I was able to get the blinking effect your character gets from respawning and L canceling to work with this. Also, a little project I just started.

Samus and Zero Suit Samus Released! I finally released something!

Zero Suit Samus comes with two version. One that just adds lights to the model and one that adds lights and a spec map. I like spec maps so each model has a custom spec map for its specific colour.
Samus is nothing new since PMDT did it in 3.6, however, I can make any Samus model now glow without changing the model whatsoever. Also they all have perfect metals and are wifi safe. Please enjoy! If you find any bugs let me know.

Good work on using light maps properly. I didn't use them on PM Samus because the extra textures take up filespace, so I used model edits instead.

The Dry Bowser in 3.6b uses the same method you used for your Samus stuff. Good work.

However, the reflection isn't working on Samus... under the phong2 material, the SamusRef texture has its Texture Marix set to false, it needs to be set to true since the objects aren't single-bound.

Dang and I thought I found all the bugs too. Thanks I don't know how that one went under my radar, I'll upload a fix ASAP. Oh, by the way, I totally understand about the file space, I just wanted to try and find a way for people who don't use 3dsmax to be able to add lights to any model. Funny thing is about a week after 3.6b came out I finally got this working (I'm new to shaders so I actually found the lighting stage in the Weavel trophy and had been working this for a decent amount of time.)

So, I know I have a lot of stuff going, however, I've been wanting to do an HD Yoshi's 64 for a while and I figured I'd do another 64 Stage while I'm at it. HD means completely remade texture, because you can't really make 8 bit texture "HD". This is the moving platform on the right of Planet Zebes 64. Enjoy

No, it's fine I'm just going to need to know what areas you need tips on. Specific things you want to know. I've been using photoshop for about five years, so I've learned a few trick. I can't really "teach" you how to make textures, because that is something you just kind of learn. I can, however, show you a little bit of my process so that you can see how I make something. Does that sound cool?

Update Time! Yoshi's Story 64 HD is progressing nicely, after I had an issue that took an entire day to fix. The transparency wouldn't display properly on anything except the Fruit tree, the heart had weird semitransparent artifacts all around the edge. I think the problem was that the material was set to "Destination Alpha" instead of "Source Alpha", whatever that means.(http://i.imgur.com/bAfIZNt.jpg)(http://i.imgur.com/Y1J64Qw.jpg)

hey! i just wanted to come around and say your texture work is really great! i especially love the spec and lighting maps you've added. the glow on samus and zss looks great and peach's shimmering gold embroidery is gorgeous

also, i can't wait to see how your HD stages turn out! i've been trying an HD smashville style stage but it's not really coming along because i don't actually have enough motivation to retexture everything, haha... but anyway, yeah! keep being awesome, i'll be following along for sure!

Thanks for those compliments! Yeah work drive can be an issue especially when you have make stuff from scratch.

Update Time! HD Midna Released! Massive thanks to Mach7.6 for the awesome render.
I remade almost all of Midna's textures and they're now HD. Her original body texture was 256x256 and the new one is 1024x1024. I also made her glow, because how could I not.

Speaking of you doing an awesome job on those glow effects Program, since you asked for suggestions of where your work would work best with a model, the Smash 3C Brawl-style Samus and its recolors could desperately use your magic touch.

It's just a beautiful looking model I love using that is held back by not having that glorious glow. I can't think of anyone better suited for the job.

If it were easy, everyone would do it.  ;)
