Title: Get Featured on the KC:MM Blog (2015)
Post by: Ricky (Br3) on August 10, 2015, 07:35:59 PM
Sup everypeeps, it's br3compactor here.

I've been featuring hacks on KC:MM's blog for around a year now, but I feel like I shouldn't be looking just into what catches my eye - even though I'm often checking the Vault, sometimes many great hacks are release close to each other, and end up being postponed as a feature even to the point of being forgotten. I am human, after all.

Some of the hackers here might also be wondering about how to be featured on the KC:MM Blog. I'm here to clear it up to a sense.

That said, I decided to bring back the "Get Featured" thread... with a twist, that is.

You can use this thread to suggest a hack to be featured in KC-MM's blog. If you think an specific hack is absolutely great and has amazing quality, bring it! I'll analyse it, and if it fits the requirements, there's a great chance of it being featured (with a video, even - courtesy of Faraway Brawl Hacks (https://www.youtube.com/user/FarawayBrawlHacks), the person responsible for the video previews for the blog).

HOWEVER, there is only one rule.

You can't suggest your own work.

If the hack you want to suggest is made by you or involves you (collab-wise), you can't post it. You're free to suggest anyone else's works but not your own.

This will allow me to see which hacks OTHER USERS love, and caught their eye. If it caught their eye and they believe it is feature-worthy, then I should give it a check. Maybe it IS feature-worthy.

However, in case you're here because you want to know how to get YOUR WORK featured, here are a few things you need to take into account when making your hacks (I'll be putting it on spoilers because it can be a bit lengthy):

1) Texture Quality

Unless you're making hacks for an specific visual style (like Smash4 style or Smash 3C), try to get your stuff to blend in with Brawl as much as possible. That goes beyond a good resolution, but also added detail and even proper colouring. If the source of your model didn't have a fitting texture to work with, MAKE YOUR OWN, and make it feel at home in Brawl. That way, your work will look way more professional, and is very likely to be featured.

2) Avoid Lag or object issues

Who doesn't love HD looking stuff? However, keep in mind you're making a hack for everyone to enjoy (or so it's expected of you), and thus should avoid stuff that doesn't work well on Wii (as opposed to Dolphin) as many users stick to Wii to playing their Brawl. Same can be said about object issues - sometimes, when the position of objects clash, they get a weird visual glitch which is quite annoying to see, called Z-Fighting. If you don't know what that is and you're focusing on making stages, look it up and avoid it. It ruins the professional look of anything.

3) Improve your Rigging skills

This is meant for characters. Sometimes, it doesn't take much to notice that a rig is lazy. There's always a way to get the character to look the way you want it to, even if you think there isn't. You're probably just a few tools away. So, get to know 3DSMax further, experiment with tools, look up tutorials. The more professional your rig is, the more likely your model will be featured. The rig is, sometimes, just as important as the model itself. Another important tip is: avoid messing with Brawl's boneset. Unless you're going for a size mod, or an unique variation of a character (for example, human-like build for Fox), you should keep the boneset unchanged, and instead of adapting the bones to the character, you should adapt the character to the bones. That way, anyone can use the hack without worries about whether it could work with an specific PSA or general mod( ie. Project M), or whether it might affect gameplay. If you want your hack to be featured, it is because you want as many people to use it as possible. And if that is so, you should keep your stuff as "everyone-friendly" as possible.

4) Be ORIGINAL

And by that I don't mean make an OC and you're cool. Nope... What I actully mean is that, when making stages, you should go to layouts that are interesting to play in, and out of the ordinary. It's the opposite of what was done in Smash4 when they created a flat version of everything. You should build something that, while still nice competitive-wise, has an unique layout. That way, people will have a reason to play YOUR STAGE, and not Battlefield, Final Destination, Smashville. Create stunning backgrounds. Everyone likes a beautiful setting, so it will give you extra points! When making characters, try going for things that nobody thought about before. Outfits are a great choice! How about a Pikachu wearing a fancy combat mask? How about Lucario wearing a summer outfit? How about Mario with a Mullet and brass knuckles? There are many possibilities, and everything you can think about can make your stuff unique and worth to have on the SD card!

In general, or TL;DR version, just try to get as professional as you can! The more it looks like something that could have been on Brawl to begin with, more likely you are to be featured!

I have two quick questions, if you would please answer them, though I'm not making you answer them, of course:

Question 1: Where would I go to request featuring my own hacks instead of someone else's? Because honestly, there are too many good hacks to count, so I figured why not do my own, since the others are most likely already featured anyway? I mean, retextures, if they're high enough quality can be something to be featured, can they not?

Question 2: If I feature my own hacks in that other thread, am I allowed to feature ones that I give credit to, if the credit is only because it was a request?(e.g. my Mr. L recolors)

Of course!

I mean, retextures, if they're high enough quality can be something to be featured, can they not?

Nowhere, really. If your stuff has quality, someone will recommend it, so, no need to worry. However, though, by now, I find it unlikely that simple textures will be featured. Simply because it would take A LOT for a texture to be impressive by now, and stand out.

Question 2: If I feature my own hacks in that other thread, am I allowed to feature ones that I give credit to, if the credit is only because it was a request?(e.g. my Mr. L recolors)

I think this is also answered in the first one. To be featured, there is nowhere you can suggest your own stuff.

If you really want to showcase your stuff, I suggest making your own thread, or posting them in the WIP thread while you're working on them.

Firstly I'd like to suggest my original Sonic character texture. Ari the Hedgehog.
I read the post I'm not dumb...I just like to troll.

Secondly, I'd like to suggest bizzozeron's 64 Remix Link.
It has really good rigging, the concept is original, all the normals are perfect, and it has nice textures.

Cool, I would actually like to suggest Program's Inkling Mario (whenever it's finished):

That was unexpected! It's a actually a collab between Rosetta-Hime and I. I've sent it to Rosetta to fix his ears, so whenever they're fixed he'll be released. Thank you!

Well, I guess it should go without saying that you gotta wait until it's finished to suggest. I can't test, and even less feature, an unfinished hack.

I would have to say give jaystring's Smash Wii U stuff a feature.

I also love jaystring's work. His rigging is is probably in the top 5%! However, I do think it should be pointed out that he doesn't optimize his models whatsoever. Most of them are so high poly you can't really use them on an actual Wii, without lag.
His ZSS (which looks beautiful!) has 33192 facepoints, as apposed to Brawls 17433
However, his work is undeniably some of the best currently being posted.

I agree. I'm willing to test his stuff on the wii, even though I know there will can be a problem with most of them. I wish he could do some model rebuilding like Large Leader has been doing for optimization.

That said, I had actually tested his Chrom, which is lower poly since it was originally not a playable character. It definitely has an excellent model and a solid rig. The only thing that bothered me about it was the texture.

It feels for me like he overdid the desaturated look for Brawl's clothes. By looking at Chrom's official look, you can easily tell.

(http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/3/36/Chromending.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130120152926)(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nOYPhzwM0AI/VX3wdOg44eI/AAAAAAAAos4/Vs4drPARmzk/w422-h537/Chrom.jpg)(http://img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120604083734/fireemblem/images/0/0a/Chrom_confession.jpg)

On Jaystring's hack, the hair is darker than his clothes, when in the original game, the clothes are darker than the hair. So, it isn't just a bit off, it is quite off.

I made an edited version for my own use, darkened while keeping the details. But even if I did release it as a collab, I wouldn't be able to feature (since I worked on it), and I can't bring myself to feature it as it is. It's quite a lame situation, I must admit...

Yeah, it's a pretty lame spot to be in. The work is all there, however, only select people can properly use it.
I'd suggest making blog posts about Dolphin exclusive mods, but there aren't very many of those.

Ayyyyyyy, dat shout out.

Anyways, for Chrom keep in mind that he edited the smash4 textures. He probably edited it from there a slight bit to try and make it fit into brawl, but nothing amazingly drastic (I had a copy of Chrom myself back when I was working on him, and while he is quite desaturated it's quite close). So keep that in mind.

The normals channels have to be put on the diffuse and have filters and stuff applied to them. While jaystrings is indeed desaturated (i remember the cape having more color) I never got the way fact smash4 result either from myself or from another person who helped me figure out how to do the textures.

There are.just some things that we can't replicate tight now. Maybe we'll.have to UAE different filters and such (satoshi figured out that a certain filter setting works better for skin even though its usually used for everything).

Small issue with the Inkling Mario:

I dunno why this happens, but the ponytail and elastic seem super bright in all stages I tried. I thought it'd be because I first tried using it on Brawl Final Destination, but it carried over to all stages.

If it works correctly on the Wii that means it's a Dolphin problem, however, I think I know how to fix it. I'll post the Dolphin fix for you to try here, and if it fixes it then I'll update the download to have a dolphin version.

As for a fix would you mind letting me know if this works.

I don't have Dolphin (my computer can barley handle normal tasks let alone Dolphin)
I'd love to fix it so it's usable to everyone, however, unless you or someone else is willing and kind enough to test it for me I can only assume I've fixed it.

If the brightness/saturation/contrast is too much of an issue, I have an alternative submission you could feature.

And that feature being BB v0.76b.

Edit: On second thought, Snoopy's Inklings aren't one slot, which will cause many issues.

I wouldn't feature a model that's supposed to represent Mario if his clothes are pink instead of red. Or something supposed to represent Super Sonic but it's green instead of yellow.

The texturing is just as important as everything else on the model. If the model excels in almost every single aspect but lacks in just one, then it might not get a feature.

The Splatoon models recently released by Snoopy, for example, are amazing models, and great in pretty much every aspect. They have, however, hitbox issues due to messed bones. Bone problems are a big no.

Those are my standards. If you have any problem with my standards for blog featuring, remember we have 11 other Blog Curators who have just as much power to feature as I do.

Anyways, taking all that into account, every other model from Jaystring jumps ahead of Chrom on the line for a feature.

I'm planning to feature Brawlbox, but only when I can make a nice Brawlbox tutorial for dummies to go on the video.

Have you guys been checking the blog, by the way? It has been updated quite often this month. We already had 3 features, with more on the way.

Those pictures for that Little Mac don't even look like the normal maps were baked on. They look very flat.

Edit: If that's Nano's Little Mac, then I can update the textures with the normal maps baked in.

The thing with Chrom's texture is that it is OFF. Which isn't the case with Little Mac.

I agree that Mac's textures could use some work. We're, however talking about one of the first SSB4 WiiU imports. Back then, I felt like the model did fit into Brawl, which is why I featured it.

And Uhhh, KJP? Are you aware that this is your and Nanobud's Little Mac (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=207662)?...

Yes, I am aware. Hence my edit.

Edit: If that's Nano's Little Mac, then I can update the textures with the normal maps baked in.
And by that, I mean making it look better, as I did bake the normal maps in for it, it's just not that noticeable.

I agree that Mac's textures could use some work. We're, however talking about a feature I chose even if it has brighter textures it's fine.

Gamidame, if you got your panties in such a bunch why don't you apply to be a blog curator instead of complaining?

Wow, way to be childish.

Chrom's textures are OFF-COLOURED. Little Mac's textures are FLAT-ISH. They're not even totally flat. There is a big difference.

I'm not going to discuss it anymore. You're definitely right and won't accept me from saying anything different than that.

You know what, while you're at it, let's go: bring every single feature I did. And go ahead and tell me which you agree or disagree and why.

I'm a human being who makes mistakes, so if you have criticism I'll gladly take it if it means doing a better job.

As much as I like the mods, I'd have to say I disagree with featuring Well Endowed Peach and Zelda because at a new user's first glace, it would likely come off as tasteless.

I also disagree with anything made by DoE, as I'm generally not a fan of his work. The models and rigging just look rushed to me.

Who's DoE? Did I feature anything from this person?

EDIT: Oh, Demon_of_Elru. Nevermind.

I don't get to check this thread for one night and it's turned into a full blown riot! Why doesn't someone just message jay and say " Hey, if you optimize Roy or ZSS to not destroy Wiis then we'll be able to feature one of them on the blog"... That would probably be considered favoritism or something on the sort, however, it would be simpler than everyone fighting about whether or not they should be featured.

Yup, the fix worked like a charm. Congrats :D
Thanks a lot for testing this, I really appreciate it! I'll try and get the Dolphin version uploaded today. Cheers!

Actually, I've tested all of Jaystrings work on Wii and have been in touch with him by PMs ever since his stuff was suggested here. He's been using the feedback to improve his work.

Most of his stuff is on the line for the feature. However, not once I've mentioned that to him, so he probably doesn't know xD

Program's got a point here; there've been like 3 pages that are mostly just a debate on whether or not the Chrom mod and the Little Mac mod fit the qualifications; but this thread is not meant for debates, it's meant to recommend hacks to be featured. And if Ricky says that something should or shouldn't be featured, I'd just listen to him, because it's a lot simpler and he knows what he's doing.

This is the only thing as of late that meets my quality standards. Everything else has been average or lower.

Oh, nice, I actually didn't see that one.

Besides, that reminds me that he actually updated Chrom with a new texture.

Thanks, KJP!
