46  Welcome / Rules / Feedback / Brawl Vault / Re: BrawlVault: Feedback and Updates on: February 01, 2016, 11:20:52 AM
Hello folks, I'm here for an announcement.

About two months ago, Project M went down for fear of legal repercussions of their modding. It was decided then to temporarily ban new P:M - related submissions from BrawlVault, to give some time for things to cool down a bit and for the former P:M members to submit their works to the Vault. Three weeks ago, we started discussions on how to handle these submissions from now on.

This concerns files from P:M 3.6 and their edits, but also files from the leaked 3.61 dev build, and their edits.
The decision has been made that all the aforementioned files will be treated like any other submissions on BV. What that means is:

  • We do not believe that such files released on BrawlVault consist of a credible enough legal danger to either us, the submitters, or the original authors. At least not more than any other BV submission.

  • Submitting edited files from both 3.6 and 3.61 is allowed for everyone, as long as proper credit is given to the original authors, as per usual.

  • Former P:M members are free to upload their own work. Starting on the 15th of February, other users will also be able to re-upload those (unedited) works if they are missing from the Vault, with proper credit.

  • Like any other BV submission, permission from original authors is not required to reupload or edit these files. Neither the submitter nor the BV staff are obligated to remove a submission with proper credit given just because the original authors ask them to. Although the latter are free to talk it out with the submitters if they disagree with their work being submitted on the Vault, the removal is left up to the submitter's discretion.

  • Packs including P:M content follow the same rules as any other packs. They must include some of the submitter's own work. They must include a ReadMe with credit to the authors of all the included hacks.

There was miscommunication on my part when we closed up P:M submissions, and it was unclear that authors could still submit their own works during the "no P:M submissions" period. This is why we're giving them two more weeks in case my statement was interpreted the wrong way. After that, anyone can submit P:M files that aren't on the Vault.

P:M related entries that were still in wait of approval will resume being published on the Vault starting today.

I'm not sure how that'd be an exception? The rules state that it's not allowed (and nobody challenges that). They don't state that the sanction has to be a deletion. The two times he's put a wrong link in there, we agreed to just change the DL link back to its normal state and nobody batted an eyelid about it.

Not that it matters, because the final decision was to have the submission deleted, which I'm also fine with considering he pulled that [censored] thrice.

'tis the end of an era. The ShadowVault is no more.  Cry

Just because no lawyers have complained doesn't mean it should get a free pass. It could potentially set the precedent of people adding adfly links using this as an excuse. Rules are rules.
Well, rules say it's not allowed. How the hack is handled is up to the staff's appreciation. The lawyers thing was just, y'know... to explain that there's no emergency here and that no, nobody's gonna get sued for an adfly link. Never said anything about a free pass.

Supposedly the DL doesn't even give the mod.
The link in the description seems like a mod to me. There's just a video tutorial file in there that fails to be extracted. If you ignore it, it works all fine.
But yeah, the "download link" is invalid and doesn't lead to a mod. That's exactly why I suggested replacing it. .w.

Now if you'd let the staff come to a collective decision that is more collective than literally just me and KJP right now, they'll get on to it, all right? You can stop reporting the hack now, something's being done about it.
A couple hours are nothing in the face of 6 months.
49  Welcome / Rules / Feedback / Brawl Vault / Re: BrawlVault: Feedback and Updates on: January 24, 2016, 05:32:49 PM
Deleting the hack and then restoring it? We can do that yeah, but it's kinda clumsy.

I personally don't like the idea of hiding perfectly usable hacks (old or not) away from the community, so I'd be more inclined to just edit the proper DL link in and removing his BV privileges until he needs them. (So most likely never.)
Turns out it's the third time since Sep 14 that he's been changing the link to third-party websites. If we "forced" him to fix it, it'd probably be only for a month or two before he'd put the ads back on. So that's not really a fruitful option.

Regardless, I'm leaving it up to the BV Staff to come up with a decision.

it is still using assets from something that isn't theirs
... Pardon?

Judging by the last edit date, it's been like that for at least the past 6 months. We haven't had any lawyers knocking on our door for that lone adfly link yet.

It's an invalid link and easy to fix. Outright deleting it sounds a bit extreme to me, doesn't it?

Let it not be said that we discourage initiative here. But to be perfectly honest with you, there's a pile of dead "projects" on both this forum and Smashboards that wanted to re-invent the game and stayed in the planning stages forever.

It takes probably a good two or three weeks to make a clean import, retextures and all. Making a new moveset and animating it takes months. Now there's all the voice clips to add, the various UI elements, yada yada. That's for one character, in a vacuum, not even interacting with the rest of the cast, or with stages or anything.
You are looking at something like a 2-3 year investment of your life, under the assumption that you'll have about as much free time as you do now. And that's if you get a lot of people to help you.

People don't join projects for their ideas. They join projects that already have proofs of concept done to begin with, and look like they have the momentum to keep going. Which is why I said that you should start making stuff on your own that's not a part of your project.

Here, you know what, I'll just link you a video at this point. It's about "making your first game", and it applies just as to "making your first mod/project" These guys make games for a living, so listen to them.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z06QR-tz1_o" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z06QR-tz1_o</a>

1- Keep a reasonable scope.
2- Don't go into a project with a specific idea of how it has to be.
3- Design your project around your skills.
4- Don't give up.

#4 is just as important as the others. We're not trying to make you give up on your dreams, we're merely pointing out that you're driving yourself into a dead-end. We know that, because you aren't the first to have made those mistakes.

You're right. I'll try to see if Nano can approve of this and I'll start small for now.
Also, I thought you meant Sammy over snake. I'll try to get Sammi Huskey and some other modders in on this project.

Wait. Nano for Nanobud?
Yes, Nano, Nanobuds, etc.

And I wouldn't bother to ask for permissions in your case. The PMDT has issued a blanket statement that they do not wish people to make a new big mod out of their own big mod, and have done all they could to hide the existence of the leaked files.
You're going to get a big resounding No. Heck, you already got it earlier in this thread.

Whether you do as they say regardless is up to you, although I'll once again warn you against aiming for the moon.
53  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / General Hacking Discussion / Re: Project M 4.0? on: January 11, 2016, 11:53:36 AM
Editing content that is not yours isn't forbidden or even discouraged in the Brawl hacking community last time I checked, so that's not really the issue there. We've never required permission for people to edit content, I don't see why we should start now.

Just, do keep in mind that the PMDT believe they've gotten in some sort of legal mess for attempting to release a new P:M version. It's hard to say whether that threat is real considering how tight-lipped they are about it, but trying to follow in those exact footsteps might not be the smartest move.

And realistically speaking, you're one person. Start small, and consider making your own content first before even envisioning game-wide projects. All this is accomplishing is setting goals that are very very disproportionate for a single person with not much of a portfolio. And making some people here [censored] bricks because P:M needs to be left alone or something.

Sami as in SammiHusky? Hasn't he been working on Smash 4 hacking?

Hello folks, this is an announcement about new staff. We got a bunch of promotions, side-motions and a few demotions.

Picano and Jack H have been Administrators for quite some time, but haven't exactly been active in the past years. They've done a great deal for the community, setting up Kitty Corp and meowMix respectively, and collaborating on setting up the very first BrawlVault. Unfortunately, they have to leave their space for some new blood.

Taking their place is Albafika. I'm sure all know him by now. He's cool and active and hella motivated, so he's been bumped to Admin.

Taking his place as a Global Moderator is Ricky/br3compactor. He's also been around for quite some time and took really good care of the blog as a Curator. He's a fairly agreeable sort, so I'm sure you can go to him if Oizen is traumatizing you or something. Tongue

On the BV Staff side, Iwvi hasn't been seen in a good 6 months, so he's been removed from the team.

Replacing him is KingJigglyPuff and Scout also makes a return. I don't do too much BV stuff so I have no good quips for them, though. Sorry doods.

The Curators situation is currently in suspended motion. More info on that when we get to it. .w.

There need to be a more cool-headed discussion on modding, legal matters, and a modder's responsibility and morality in all this, but considering the amount of unreliable or misleading info circulating around (some of it coming straight from the PMDT), this doesn't seem like the best time or environment to have that sort of discussion right now.

I intend to put up a thread to discuss this whole P:M shutdown situation a bit more in detail, as soon as the forum will be a bit more stable. Hopefully this shouldn't take too long.
I don't want to completely shut down any discussions here, but it might be better to stick to the topic, which is the leaked files.

And what Hinata meant here was that the linked post's author isn't exactly giving us the most factual report there is. In case it wasn't made obvious by the "lol this is bull[censored], this guy is a [censored], also play my own build I love you all" and other such pleasantries.  Roll Eyes

I might also make some custom alts for her, but I'm not sure about putting them up on the vault just yet as I'm not quite sure where the vault staff stands on that situation.

We're not sure yet either.
This is only temporary, though.

Gentlemen, you will quit this mindless bickering at once.

I do have a question about the codes though. As I don't dabble much in PM, I'm sure it goes without saying that using these codes in VBrawl could cause damage, correct? Or is that not always the case? Essentially, I want to try out the Stamina mode with the endless stage code for the same mode in VBrawl.
Hard to say what is stable and what isn't, at this stage. You're gonna have to go through trial and error I'm afraid, unless some of the more social coders come in and help out.

(And for the love of god, this site needs that new host already, I've had to retype this twice because the site kept crashing when I was about to post.)
I'm sorry. We've been hit by a consistent string of bad luck, and Vyse has few weekends to spare for the move.
We're trying to make it happen this weekend. If not, definitely before the end of the year.
