Yep; glitches and bugs are sure to be trouble. Do you have any PSA experience?

I've got Luigi, Sonic and Olimar cooking. I'm pretty sure Luigi and Olimar are ready, however Sonic keeps giving me trouble. T_T No matter HOW many times I mess with his textures, I can't make him as bright as I'd like.

I think it's got something to do with his "mask" textures, so I've brightened them a bit. Hopefully that doesn't screw things up royally.
272  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: Project Nostalgia on: February 02, 2014, 01:02:23 PM
:C I'm afraid that's not the idea behind the project. Of course, the concept has crossed my mind before; but ultimately the project's primary focus is strictly in-game, rather than the artwork.

Now, artwork is in fact a part of the development process: In some cases, I'm using it as a reference for vertexes, but vertexing only. Colors must be sprite based/texture based.

The reasons for this are very simple: the in-game sprite/texture is what you see when you're playing. Obviously, you remember that as opposed t the artwork in the manual.

Furthermore, using artwork would greatly diminish the amount of potential material I have to work with. For example, the Mario Bros. 3 pic you posted? It would be silly to make a Mario based on that artwork, because... it's just normal Mario, haha.
Same thing with that Dedede. It looks almost exactly like his N64 appearance; why scrap his monochrome GB design when I can make both?

While artwork is being referenced in certain cases, I really think it would be a poor choice as the basis for the entire project.

I really hate to ask, but any progress on Vanguard and Hero Ike?

...Specifically, with making it P:M compatible?
274  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: Project Nostalgia on: February 02, 2014, 10:27:49 AM
Hold up; you might want to hold up on that.

I'm lovin' the enthusiasm, and I hate to step on your toes but I think that font doesn't quite fit the project. Lemme pitch somethin' simple:

Top is Impact, bottom is Trebuchet (italicized). Whatcha think?

Haha, glad we could (inadvertently) help!

Just wait until that OP is updated, you haven't seen nothin' yet.
276  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: Project Nostalgia on: February 02, 2014, 07:09:11 AM
Custom rim? Now that's what I'm talking about! I will give you the basic rim texture as a default, you'll apply your custom texture yourself. Alright man?

Yeah, sounds perfect. I'll spend the day playing with the Rim effect... it;ll be a lot of guesswork, but I know how to work this.

First I'll make six different shades of lighting, pop-em on all six of somebody's slots, and take it from there.
Then, for each individual character, I'll make six individual black-hole sizes and test them out all in one go. The most natural looking on will make the cut.

Who do you plan on doing next? I had this idea for R.O.B...

Thanks for the reference pic, that's exactly what I was planning for him.
...However, I'm at a . Do I make Japanese R.O.B. the first slot, or U.S.A. R.O.B.??? Something tells me to go with Japan, since, y'know, that's where Nintendo originates haha.

OLD RIM EFFECT

NEW RIM EFFECT

Thoughts? Scout, I took the Smash 3 Edge and made it only like, 15 points brighter.
MUCH more subtle, and yet the effect is still visible.

Here's the Edge in case you want it:

Oh my! I see you've got a Nostalgia banner in your sig.  Happy Face
277  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: Project Nostalgia on: February 01, 2014, 07:42:54 PM
Yes. I was referring to the stuff in your OP.

Well I'm glad you can take my critique and make your stuff better.
Good lord, that OP's a disgrace right now, haha.

Naturally; an artist's perspective on his own work is inherently clouded by personal bias. Without feedback, it's very very hard to grow. Glad you took the time to comment on my work.
278  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: February 01, 2014, 07:29:00 PM
-Some of your model work looks a bit wonky to me, but I have high quality expectations.
Got any specifics? It's real easy to botch a vertex, so I get watcha mean. If you're referring to the material in my OP however, yeah, all that stuff is waaaaay outdated. For example:
- I'm completely redoing NES Meta Knight
- Lyndis... yeah, not even gonna bother with that one, haha
- NES Marth needs a complete makeover
- I wanna try SNES Falcon from scratch
- I'm really proud of Wolf, but he's got slight issues... his model is flippin' complicated >_>
- Samus is decent, but "wonky" in really tough to spot places... I oughtta start fresh on her.
- Falco... I just can't quite put my finger on it, but something's wrong about him.

However, I'm like... SUPER proud of my (in terms of Vertexing), Zelda II Link, GBA Falcon, Assault Wolf, OoT Zelda, and my GX Falcon. However, if you've got suggestions for them I'd be glad to hear 'em.

-Some of your textures look rather bland and dull. Your "Nostalgia Peach" is one example.
A good chunk of my hacks were released way too early; I regret releasing a good handful of them (when I did, at any rate). I'm going to delete many of the Pokemon ones... those aren't right at all. Waaaaay too dark. The Kongs are particularly inaccurate as well... specifically Donkey. I'm actually real proud of Diddy, but both the Kongs are admittedly far from the DKCR look I was going for. Falco also has some lighting issues... Zelda II Link is too bland, and I think the colors might be off. Both Marths need a makeover (NES especially), both Dededes are too bright, GBC Mewtwo could use some adjustment on those red tones and... well, the trouble with Peach is that, I'm limited to her design. It's remarkably simplistic as is; but naturally, there's still much I could do to spruce it up, so I won't just leave it as is. She certainly does leave something to be desired.

^Despite all those disappointments, I'm overall really glad with the way many of my textures have worked out. I'm absolutely in love with my GBA/GC Falcons, and I gotta say, my Yoshi pack is actually really awesome. And I'm real proud of my Sheik and Zelda too, ha. But now I'm just rambling.

But it's important to note, my series is strictly based on callbacks to actual games, recent and classic. Meaning, if those are the colors I'm dealt, or if that's the model I'm portraying etc. etc., that's what I'm going to go with. It's going to take a lot of creativity to make this work, of course, but I think the challenge makes the reward all that much cooler, haha.

Take my GBC Mewtwo for example (which, of course, needs work). The colors are strange and silly, but to me that makes the hack awesome in a hilariously nostalgic kinda way, haha. I find myself playing it more than my other Mewtwos, even despite how "tacky" it is. This may sound really weird, but I think it's tacky in a cool way.

-The abuse of Rim Lighting.
I think both of you are right, and wrong about this one. Lol Scout, you're not out of a job don't worry xD

The Edge I'm using is far too bright right now, yes. I gotta fix that. However, Scout, the Smash 3 rim is... barely noticable at all. I'm certainly going to tone the rim effect down, but definitely not to Smash 3 levels. Again, it makes the texture look grey. What I need is a subtle balance between the extremes we've both been using.

ALSO, what I need to do is make individualized Edge textures for each character: like you said, the Pokemon don't cope well with it... Charizard specifically, as much as I hate to say it. Each character needs JUST the right sized black-hole in the middle of the Edge, so I'm going to make some different sizes and see what works out for who.

And KJP, I get what you mean; carelessly rimming everything is a mistake, and it can "cheapen" a hack by making something mediocre look medi-okay (lol). I'm not gonna abandon rim by any means, but it's certainly time I roll with the punches.

Personally, I'm in love with rimming. Not the way I have it now, of course, but the potential it has as a design tool is incredible. Used correctly, it updates the graphics to a whole new level. But, of course, as with any shading effect, abusing it can look pretty raw. :| Perfecting the rim is a definite priority for the project now.

I've got a ton of work to do. Damn, I hate to neglect my PSAs... I have a little cult following of fans who have been waiting forever for another PSA release. xD

yusssssssssssssssssss

I'll get some in-game pics and update this sucker. you cats can expect to see that Pokemon X & Y Charizard in the Vault momentarily, as well.

...Aaaaand he's in the Vault!

Made the wings a little bluer and added a slight red tone to the underbelly. This one's done for sure.

So... what's next? Project Nostalgia is nearing its first phase of completion! Before long, every single standard costume will be replaced! So who's left? Let's see...

Wario
Fox
Snake
Luigi
Olimar
R.O.B.
Pit
Sonic
*Bulbasaur
*Jigglypuff
*Wartortle
*Donkey Kong
*Pikachu
*Marth

*Means it's already released, but is very much in need of an update.

I think for now I'm just gonna work on the OP for the rest of the night, haha. If I've got time I'll work up some CSPs, too.
280  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: February 01, 2014, 04:12:33 PM
Hermmm... The tunic is great, but I'm afraid my changes to the skin tone may have been too subtle. Whatcha thinkin'?

In other news, I'm lyk 99% sure this puppy is ready for release.
281  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: February 01, 2014, 03:45:59 PM
To officially answer your question Oreodesu, yes, the Red and Blue tunics are confirmed for the full Nostalgia package. As it turns out, 9 slots is perfect.

For a better idea, I eyedropped the skintones from Ocarina of Time and the above screen.

(Ignore the brightness, as that's a result of Peach's Castle being quite a bright stage.)
As you can see, the hue of the skin tone is far too much in the yellow, giving an odd sort of effect.

And on the strap texture, I spotted it right away. A bit more work and you can probably hide it, I think.

I actually have Peach's Castle WIP texture hacked, haha. Major N64 callback, lol.

Thanks for the advice; I've cooked up some pretty good idea's in terms of getting rid of the strap problem. See; I took the good side and just... flipped it over! Symmetry and all that.

^ Like so. Than, I used a Smudge tool to make things look natural.
Whatcha guys think?

Aaaaand for the yellow skin... I'm in the process of toning it down right now. I thiiiiink I've achieved a good balanced to the point where I've diminished the yellow, and yet kept the Ocarina of Time feel to it.

I'm real glad this project is starting to get a little more attention, haha. The feedback is very much appreciated.
282  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: February 01, 2014, 02:49:38 AM
Oooooh, hittin' up Wolf next? I like the sound of that.

But...
The strap texture is removed. Is it still too noticeable or something?
And yes, the face is very yellow; but that's because this is an N64 OoT Link, not a 3DS one. However, you're right, the effect is just a tad too extreme.

Ah, for those of you who haven't seen it, this is what we're talking about:
283  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: January 31, 2014, 08:08:58 PM
Any chance you'll do the red and blue tunics for the Ocarina of Time Link?
Oooooh... That's a good question.

You see, there are currently 9 slots I have to work with when it comes to Link. Meaning, I can make 9 costumes.

So... provided I only have 6 planned costumes (other than OoT Link), which is fairly unlikely, than the answer is a definite yes.

But two things:

Even IF I'm overloaded with costumes, yes, this could definitely happen as a side project.

BUT, provided I do this, I must warn you:
1) Red Link will have the Biggoron Sword, Hover Boots, and the Golden Gauntlets.
2) Blue Link will have the Iron Boots and the Silver Gauntlets.

...But I could easily make these hacks otherwise, with the standard boots and Master Sword etc. So, look forward to it, these are actually relatively simple things to make,

Ya dig?
284  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Character Vertexes and Textures / Re: "Nostalgia" Series Project Thread on: January 31, 2014, 05:27:28 PM
I prefer the bright rim; anything else is either unnoticable or makes the hack look gray.
Plus, I figured out today that if the effect is way to bright, I can simply adjust the black hole in the center to fix the problem. That was the main reason I didn't release my Ness until now; the rim effect gave him a huge white border, haha! It actually looked kinda cool, in its own way... but it didn't make sense with everyone else.

How fitting... We got Lucario in Smash 4 today...
And they made him even bluer than before, lol.
If you've seen X & Y Lucario, there's much much less saturation: like this hack.

These are great! I like the Dedede one! It's a cool and original idea. I like the little details like his white cheeks to match his NES sprite.
Haha, yeah! At first I was perplexed... some of his sprites make his skin look black, and some of them made it look white. 0_o But then I noticed some of the sprites looked black with white cheeks... and I thought that looked awesome, so I popped it on the texture and wallah! Problem solved. Cheesy

Ness looks good too. Not a lot of SNES Ness hacks get his skin color right but you nailed it.
^^^^^ Thisssss
The big issue with most of the Ness hacks in the vault is that they either get the skin wrong, or the pants/stripes wrong. Either the skin's way too bright or the pants are blue, and not purple-ish. Although, I think I went a tad too purple with this one... might update it later. Getting the right balance of blue/purple is super hard.
I have a theory that Ness is actually an Asian American, hence the darker skin. Of course... my theory falls apart when you consider every other Earthbound character's skin is the same color, but whatever, haha.

A lot of people miss really subtle details with Lucas, too, actually. There are a handful of "Mother 3" Lucas hacks in the Vault, but they always miss one three subtle things:
1) Lucas' hair is almost white, not yellow.
2) Lucas' pants have a subtle dash of purple.
3) Lucas' shoes are actually orange, not red.
