Okay, so I though I'd update Splozion's Funky Kong texture with a nice vertex.  I toiled for hours, finally got it to where I was satisfied, and this is what it looks like in Brawlbox:

Anyways, this is what he looks like in game:






So yeah...  I have no idea why that's happening and I'd really like to release this [censored] texture.   I see what you did there ...

Before you try and help me, here's what I've already looked at:

1. There are no holes in the model.  The texture however did have holes in it.  I filled them.  No change.

2. I rechecked the edited vertices in 3DS Max to see if there were some stretching out into the stratosphere.  I didn't see anything, but these were raw vertices, I was never able to save my fully edited DAE, so it was kind of hard to tell.

3. This uses the Tieless DK model.  This might be relevant, this might not be.  Obviously I vertexed it further, but different polygons than the one that has the tie.  (I think...)

4. I did not screw around with bones at all.

So if any of you have any clue as to why this is happening, that would be great.  Oddly enough, the hack is actually fully playable with no slowdown or crashing whatsoever.  It's just an eyesore.  And the direction of the stretching is relative to the camera, as in, the weird stretchiness moves with the camera, so that makes me think it's not a problem with the vertices but actually just some weird graphical glitch.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, I'm not an idiot, so don't treat me like one when you answer this.  not impressed

I say this because I've noticed a growing trend when people ask for help with Riivolution.  They're either completely ignored, vaguely pointed in the direction of other sites, or talked down to like "you ought to know this already noob" and barely helped at all.

I've been faithfully downloading all of the excellent AGFanProduction Mewtwo updates, got mariokart64n's model and some textures, and took some good looking snapshots and shooped them into CSP's.  The character select screen even says "Mewtwo", but the announcer does not, and he sounds like Lucario when he fights. So I decided to try using "Riivolution" in order to get the sound pack to work.  I got Riivolution to work all by myself, and I got it to work pretty damn well!  I even meticulously edited the file patch code out of my RSBE01.gct using HXD so that all of my other codes (alloys, unrestricted camera, etc...) would work with Riivolution.  And they did!  But no matter what I did, there were always some gripes I had with Riivolution:

1. It requires you to have multiple copies of the SAME files in multiple places on your SD card if you want to play a replacement mod.  For instance, I play Brawl +, which means I have to get rid of my "pf" directory and have an identical "ssbb" folder on the root of my SD card just so Riivolution can read the game, and then an IDENTICAL "brawlplus" folder within an even larger "brawlmods" (also includes half of the same files) folder on the root of the SD.  Being able to load up vBrawl, Brawl +, or Brawl - from the same card whenever I want on the fly is a nice feature, yes.  Taking up more than half of my SD card with 3 or 4 copies of the same flipping files is not.  I know that there's a networking feature (that doesn't come with any kind of instructions at all), but again, multiple gigs of my work/school/music hard drive devoted to multiple copies of the same Brawl textures is not an investment I want to make.

2. I'm stuck with an OOOOOLD version of Brawl + and the other mods.  Brawl + has now gone Gold, although I haven't gotten the update because it gets rid of custom stages (they're my first babies).  I don't know what version I have, but it's the one that downloads from the Homebrew Updatifier and comes with Weegee in the opening video, the unrestrained camera integrated, and other such magnificence.  The version Riivolution confines you to doesn't have these things, it even has the normal Brawl title screen, which makes me believe that it's a very old version and the differences are pretty miniscule.  The Riivolution people don't seem to have any intention of keeping their XML's up to date.  If you use Riivolution and want to play Brawl +, you're stuck with a woefully out of date version.

3.  Can't take snapshots and save them to the SD card because the "pf" folder is gone.  If you don't have in game snapshots with you Vault uploads, they get reported.  This is perfectly reasonable, but now that I know Riivolution keeps you from saving snapshots to your SD (maybe there are other methods of getting them to your computer?), I kind of feel for all of those people who have to use Brawlbox screens.  I could keep the pf folder, but that would mean another 300 mb or so of my SD card gone to make space for files that are already on there... TWICE.

4.  The Mewtwo voice brsar doesn't even work.  No matter where I put it.  The download says to put it in pf/sound, and to use riivolution.  These are contradicting statements, since riivolution doesn't read files from the pf directory...  So I put it ssbb/sound.  Doesn't work.  I put it in brawlmods/music.  No change.  I put in brawlmods/brawlplus/sound. Nada.  I put it in ALL THREE! (bare in mind that the brsar file is over 100 mb and this officially fills my SD card to full capacity)  Again, I arrive at the character select screen, select "Mewtwo", and am told, rather passionately by the announcer, that NAY!  I have selected "Lucario" once again.

So...  I said screw Riivolution, got rid of the 1.3 GB of cloned brawl files, restored the pf folder to its rightful place, and decided I'd wait till somebody figured out a different way to put sound files in Brawl.  This new hexpack stuff looks promising... but oh wait.  It requires Riivolution.   I see what you did there ...  Look I got it to work, but there were A LOT of problems.  This does not need to be something Brawl modders start relying on by any means.  Unless of course, I was going about it incorrectly.   If this is going to be the way we hack Brawl now, what was I doing wrong?
TL;DR: I know how to use Riivolution, I just think it sucks.  Read #4 above, tell me what to fix, and I might be willing to compromise.

I've noticed that people have been using .TGA files for their CSP's, I guess this is the standard right now, and correct me if I'm wrong because I don't use CUPASH, but I guess that's the filesize CUPASH uses too. 

You're all wrong, and let me tell you why.

Well I got really frustrated experimenting with different image types because PNG's are the only kind that maintain transparency, but they tend to have a large filesize, which as we all know too too well, causes the .PAC archive to get to big and crash the game.  I see what you did there ... 

TGA's are smaller, but don't maintain transparency, and look really ugly on the character select screen (in my humble opinion).  Transparency is the reason that Nintendo used PNGs for all of their image files in the first place.  Well, despair not, because I discovered a little trick that let's you save images as PNG's AND compress them to a smaller filesize. 

1. Open up your TGA's in Photoshop CS3, convert them to RGB color mode (Image/Mode/RGB), use the background eraser tool to get rid of all that Magenta ugliness, and then save the image as a PNG.

2. Go back to Image/Mode, and convert it back to Indexed color mode (Primary, Localized Color), this time as a PNG, and save it again.  You'll find that the filesize is now SMALLER than it was as a TGA, and your character portraits look much better integrated with the originals!

I hope this helps some of you.  Likewise, I'm sure many of you will find it useless, or already knew this.  I use Photoshop, which is great, but I'm sure that there are analagous methods in similar image editing programs.

Right Now, all of the stages in the STGCUSTOM pack are automatically set to play Battlefield's songs in the game.  For places like Fourside, Venom, and Mushroom Kingdom 64, this isn't very fitting...  Im srs here  Is there a way to edit the .rel files so that a STGCUSTOM can have another stages My Music selection, but not take over its slot?  For instance, could I somehow edit the .rel for Mushroom Kingdon 64 so it plays Mushroomy Kingdom's songs without getting rid of Mushroomy Kingdom?  Thanks!

Whenever I edit common5.pac and info.brres in Brawlbox, the two files that contain all of the Character Selection Portraits/Stock Icons/etc., I'm able to boot up the game (Brawl +) just fine, and then whenever I choose something from the menu that would take me to the Character Seelection Screen, like "Brawl" or "Training" or you get the idea, the game crashes with the sound of death.  What am I doing wrong and WHY IS THIS SO HARD?   Sad

Now bare with me, because this is possibly a VERY noobish question, but have any particularly adventurous hackers tried to replace the slots the game uses for custom stages with new stage hacks?  Just think about it, if this could be figured out we could have INFINITE stages without ever having to replace the originals!  Granted, I don't know much about stage replacement, and I know even less about how custom stages fit into it all, so if this is completely impossible, feel free to tell me so and lock the thread.  But if I'm actually onto something here...  Happy Face

THE AMAZING HYPE MACHINE
It was near the middle of October...  I was having an extremely fruitful period of Brawl hacking.  Many amazing projects were started, none were ever released.  Until today, I had sort of dropped Brawl Hacking completely and thought I might never return.  I've been preoccupied with the following things, in no particular order:

-Trying to get laid
-School Play-Les Miserables[/shadow]
-General School BS
-College Applications
-Minecraft
-Super Meat Boy
-Existential Terror
-Philosophical Musing
-Other Indie Games
-More Trying to Get Laid

But I'm back!  And I've decided to post pictures of all of my unfinished projects and let you, yes YOU! decide what's worth finishing and in what order.  I've decided to call it THE AMAZING HYPE MACHINE

There Will Be Brawl Mario


In There Will Be Brawl, Mario is kind of a burnout drunk in the wake of having to sell his medical practice after a long string of bad luck.  He's unable to adapt to the harsh new reality of the Mushroom Kingdom, so it's Luigi he keeps the brothers afloat by selling drugs to various underworld thugs.  Eventually Mario puts down the Jack Daniels and goes on a vengeful rampage to rescue Peach (who's been kidnapped... lol) and becomes a total violent badass.  Seriously go watch this movie:http://therewillbebrawl.com/episodes.php

This has been done and looked great for a really long time, I guess I didn't release it because it wasn't as robust as my There Will Be Brawl Kirby:http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=12115 Although it's really hard to top that.  I kind of wanted every TWBB character to be a "pack" like that though so you could basically replace the whole roster with TWBB characters and their movesets would change too.  I thought about changing Mario's cape into a bloody hammer or a bottle of Jack Daniels but eh...  So keep an eye out for this one in the next week.

I think I hesitated with releasing this one because it's too similar to the normal ZSS.  I'll wait and add some more costumes to comprise her "pack" and possibly throw in the TWBB Samus suit which is basically just a [censored]ty-looking homemade version of the power suit.  I thought about vertexing her to look more like the cute actress who plays her but then I'd have to go and do that for everyone and that will be really tedious.

8/8/10:Various Things of Interest: Snake's Eyepatch Teaser, Desert Eagle, Moustacheless Overalls Wario
I've figured out vertexing and become quite good, so I'll be making the boss's model myself.  I'll probably be doing Raiden (over Marth) as well.  I actually got the hair completely finished for the Boss, only to realize that in my struggle for perfection I had basically created a high res next-gen model and added a [censored]load of vertices...  That was before I really knew what I was doing though.  I DID successfully vertex Snake a nice looking eyepatch, but I used his Final Smash eye to edit, so I asked Dingoberriz to make a "mega model" where the final smash eyes are always showing, and I'll just hex out the other one.  Till then you guys will just have to stare at this:



Also, I vertexed up a moustacheless Overalls Wario!  Yay!

WARNING: When you grab the smashball, his face glitches up.  At the moment, I have no idea how to fix this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Once you use the the smash ball by pressing b, the minor texture corruption goes away and everything is dandy again.

There are little problems, for instance, his nipples are a little lopsided, and its hard to tell that his hat is supposed to be hair, but all in all I think he turned out really well, and probably won't revisit this one considering it already took a good 6 hours.

Despite the fact that
1. Metal Gear Solid is an incredible franchise rife with possibilities for new characters, items, and stages
2. Solid Snake was in the damn game to begin with

Metal Gear Solid and its affiliated titles tend to get completely shafted by most hackers, and Snake gets vertex and texture hacked into characters from OTHER games even though a good chunk of his supporting cast are HIS CLONES.

Now, my current theory as to why this is happening is that simply put, the Nintendo/Smash Bros. fanbase really doesn't have much overlap with the Metal gear fanbase, and most hackers ignore the series simply because they aren't familiar with it.

SO that's basically what these games are like.  Do you understand now?  DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

Now to the actual gameplan.  I've got lots of ideas, and I'd love to get right to them, but I really have NO clue how to model or texture or anything... So while I'm learning how to do that, any other Metal Gear fans, or simply chivalrous hackers, your help is wanted and very much appreciated.  I'm going to start a list of projects that as far as I know should be accomplishable, feel free to suggest more, and I'll add more as I think of them as well.  If you feel like you can tackle one of these, go for it.  I'll put your name down next to the project and once, it's completed, PM me with links and pics and all that fancy shmansy stuff and I'll post it here.
