I've always wanted to know which one is better and what they differ from each other.

I'm currently running Riivo off of Smash Stack.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

    I facepalmed so hard.

Riivolution IS a homebrew application. The title should have been:
"Riivolution and Gecko -- what's the difference? Which is better?"

Well sorry for being new to this stuff and not knowing.

    Anyway, I see.

Actually, the question still remains: what does Riivo help Homebrew do? Like what does it do differently? I thought they both let you use cheats on games.

Also, what does "OS" stand for in "Gecko OS"? Operating System? Ocarina Something?

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so rude. I can see how it can come off that way.

Riivolution is basically Phantom Wing's "File Replacement Code", except that it applies to every Wii game.

Gecko is more specific, and can apply codes to your games (well, a little modification to Riivolution can let it use codes too).

And I always thought the OS stood for "Operating System".

I think it's easier to use certain codes with Gecko than Riivolution, like the Clone Engine or the Phantom pwnt Dantarion whatever, because you'll have to name the stages differently from what they're named in the ISO and set up your XML accordingly..... :/

Another thing you should make note of is that while running Riivolution, you CAN'T save replays and snapshots and etc. to the SD Card. You also cannot remove the SD card while in play.

You also need to use the REAL disc when using Riivolution.

I think there's another thread like this somewhere made a while ago already, maybe search for that?

I'm aware of all these things but did not know I won't be able to use the Clone Engine -- gay.

@JetAurion: I still don't get the difference from Riivo, Gecko or Homebrew (sorry for being such a noob).

    Simply put:

    Riivolution - on-the-fly fancy file-replacement-thingymajig
Gecko - nifty little software that allows you to apply codes on games (like Moon Jump)
Homebrew - all software and applications made not endorsed by the official company which created the product the homebrew is made for

    Does that help?

@specter: You will be able to use the Clone Engine; it'll just require an XML edit, making it either exponentially more difficult than Gecko, or you could wait for someone to make it and then take it.

It's still being worked on, specifically for use in Project M, at least, that's as far as I know.

The exploit methods are mostly used to install the HBC.  That way, you can just use the HBC to run your Homebrew applications.

Between Gecko OS and Riivolution, Gecko OS does let you change most hacks at will.  Riivolution, however, doesn't have that capability.  Also, you can't access your SD Card with Riivolution.

Of course, the upside with Riivolution is the added support of sound hacks, and it handles music hacks better.

Yeah so Riivo is really just mostly used for Brawl, then? And Gecko OS is just like another Action Replay?

    Oh ok.

I thought Riivolution patched EVERYTHING for Brawl. Am I mistaken?

also, you can use codes for Riivolution on Brawl, you just need a couple of XML files.

I know I use XMLs. You only need 'modlauncher.XML', though (you said a couple are needed).

Also, might be a noob question, but what's "patching"?
