Is doing that brawlbox method to hard? Want a newer way? Well look no more!

Welcome to a BrawlBox Tutorial. I'll be showing you how to create and edit CSPs in BrawlBox. I will make things easier to those who don't have the requirements, which is listed below.  If you have any questions regarding to this tutorial, please ask!

    File Patch Code [NTSC-U only]
    BrawlBox [Opening sc_selcharacter.pac]
    GIMP [Editing images]
Brawl Snapshot Decrypter [Upload Brawl pictures]
Brawl ISO Files [For Battle Portraits ONLY; info -> portrait]
    sc_selcharacter.pac [Fresh and original file]
    _________________________________________________ _______

      • If you don't know where to start and get your pictures, take snapshots in Brawl, go to your album, and copy/move them to your SD card.
    • Now, before you even begin, you will have to decrypt your Brawl pictures to the computer, so you'll be able to edit them and remove the background and make them transparent in GIMP or Photoshop. You don't have to do it for all portraits though; you may get a picture from the internet as your portrait, such as Rosalina.

    #1)

    • Open BrawlBox
    • Open sc_selcharacter_en.pac
    • Click the + on char_bust_tex_lz77

    #2)

    • Choose whatever character you want from MiscData[0] -> MiscData[46]
    • Here is a list:

    00 - Mario
    01 - DK
    02 - Link
    03 - Samus
    04 - Yoshi
    05 - Kirby
    06 - Fox
    07 - Pikachu
    08 - Luigi
    09 - Falcon
    10 - Ness
    11 - Bowser
    12 - Peach
    13 - Zelda
    14 - Sheik
    15 - ICs
    16 - Marth
    17 - G&W
    18 - Falco
    19 - Ganondorf
    21 - MK
    22 - Pit
    23 - ZSS
    24 - Olimar
    25 - Lucas
    26 - Diddy
    27 - PT
    28 - Charizard
    29 - Squirtle
    30 - Ivysaur
    31 - Dedede
    32 - Lucario
    33 - Ike
    34 - ROB
    36 - Jigglypuff
    37 - Wario
    40 - Toon Link
    43 - Wolf
    45 - Snake
    46 - Sonic
    60 - Sandbag
    62 - Red Alloy
    63 - Yellow Alloy
    64 - Blue Alloy
    65 - Green Alloy
    108 - Master Hand
    109 - Crazy Hand

    • You MUST remember that the size is: 128x160
    • The format must retain or else data size will change (increase or decrease); increasing it is bad since it will increase in data size
    • You must also remember the end of the number highlighted on the picture, as that will be part of the battle portraits tutorial, which will be a bit confusing (Kirby is 5 or 05)

    #4)

    • When you have decrypted your pictures, you should place them on a folder for safe keeping
    • Choose a portrait for your liking

    #5)

    • Open GIMP or Photoshop
    • Go to File -> New
    • Make sure that it is 128x160 and is filled with transparency
    • You should have a blank image, follow the next step after this

    #6)

    • Go to File -> Open as Layers
    • Open your saved portrait as a layer

    #7)

    • Do not fear if your image is too big, we'll scale layer it!
    • Go to Layer -> Scale Layer
    • Do not make the image too close to the top or too close to the bottom because some parts of the portrait will be covered from their CSS names

    #8)

    • With this portrait, resizing it to 300x225 is good
    • If you have a variety of big or small portraits, fool around using the scale layer option until you are satisfied with the size

    #9)

    • You should have this result
    • If you have a surrounding yellow-dashed lines beyond around the image, go to Layer -> Layer to Image Size

    #10)

    • Right click the layer -> Merge Down
    • You WILL have to merge both of the two layers shown on the picture in order to make the black background removed

    #11)

    • This should be the result
    • Yeah, now we have a black background, but we want a TRANSPARENT background. Let's move on to the next step!

    #12)

    • Do you see a wand tool on your toolbox? Click that; it lets you remove a certain single-coloured background
    • If you do not see a toolbox on your screen, go to Windows -> Recently Closed Docks and recover the toolbox back to its own position

    #13)

    • Antialiasing ON ; Feather Edges ON or OFF (Gives a glow feeling on the bordered image if on) ; Select Transparent Areas ON ; Radius at 10.0 ; Thershold at 15.0 or a bit higher if you want

    #14)

    • How to do it? Just click the background you want to remove and press Delete or Cut (CTRL + X) it

    #15)

    • This should be your result
    • You're pretty much done editing the portrait, now we have to go back to BrawlBox and replace the original image
    • IMPORTANT! Also, make sure you INDEX the image! (Image -> Indexed) Having too many colours results in larger file sizes from individual images, which can then result to Brawl freezing. I recommend indexing the image to about 256 palettes, or lower if you want to. You should also save your images to .png to keep transparency when replacing an image into BrawlBox. The file size should NOT go over 3.79 MB, as it will result a freeze when loading the CSS [Thanks to hotdogturtle for the details]

    #16)

    • Go back to your BrawlBox window
    • Now select WHATEVER original portrait you want and replace it to your own-made portrait

    #17)

    • This should be your result
    • For Gecko users, save it in X:/private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/menu2/sc_selcharacter.pac.
    • While common5.pac is known to freeze due to its fragile file size limit, you may remove Fit[Zenigame/Lizardon]MotionEtc.pacs as they are not very useful in the file, while they can still be used in their own folder directory. It is located in X:/private/wii/RSBE/pf/system
    • For Riivolution users, save it in X:/brawlmods/textures/system with no "_en"
