my wii can't read ANY disk...
I play brawl using CFG USB loader using a GCT for hacks.

sadly, USB loader developers weren't smart enough to add game patching support.

I find USBLoaderGX is the best for backup loading brawl off of a USB device. It's what I've always used since my wii's been on life support (broken disc drive), and it does me just fine with the file patch code.
You'll have to look into setting up cios and the like, I don't really know what the policy is for talking about that kind of stuff around here though so I'll just end with saying that google is your friend.

CFG is just as good here, and also supports gamecube games.
(actually the support is much broader than GX)

I am interested as to why everyone prefers GX over the smarter choice though :/

I guess it's because of the simplicity of the DARN THING.

I've had 0 compatibility issues on GX, any that I have are usually solved by setting up my loading configuration properly, and GX also does gamecube or Triiforce if you happen to have that installed. It's got a way nicer GUI than all the other loaders I find too, so that's my main reason for using it. I like the mock wii menu.

You just need the file patch code and just put your hacks like if it was a disc oh and go to options and make sure ocarina is on
