Title: Why Brawl- Kicks Ass!
Post by: SiLeNtDo0m on May 15, 2011, 08:58:35 AM
(http://i341.photobucket.com/albums/o382/PrideToBeMe/Crap/Bminus20-5.png)

For those of you who don't know, the point behind the Brawl- codeset is that if everyone is overpowered, no one will be (in fact, the exact slogan is "if it's broken, break it until it's fixed".  What this means is that every character is overpowered to the point where they could all easily take on vBrawl Metaknight without much of a problem, but as a result of this the roster is balanced (think Marvel vs Capcom 3).  However, the thing that sets Brawl- apart are the unique additions given to each character.  Each character has gained a new "gimmick".  One that makes the character feel fresh to play, but still retains the best aspects of the character, allowing vBrawl players to quite easily adjust to the new playstyle aspects.   Here are some videos that I made showing of the majority (not all though) of the characters in Brawl-:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE-1lasQ-oQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2J-kQrGJcA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8CKIpKriic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oA2mnkf4psw

Now for a quick Pros and Cons summary:

Pros

- The pace is almost identical to vBrawl, allowing for easy adjustment.  However, it never feels slow.
- Increased hitstun means that now combos have never been easier and more satisfying to pull off.
- Each character feels deep and varied.  Even the clones (such as Mario and Luigi) have plenty of unique touches to make them feel new
- There is a universal wall jump
- There are a load of cool easter eggs (e.g. some taunts deal damage, some moves have new and interesting effects etc)
- Includes a custom "fixed" CSPs, Battle Portraits and other cool stuff.

Cons

- Some character changes may be jarring at first.
- Whilst increased hitstun is generally a good thing, it means that you can no longer momentum cancel as effectively as before, removing one of the most effective forms of DI
- There aren't very many PSAs that cater to Brawl- at the moment (if I ever go back to doing PSA, I will change that I can assure you).
- No PAL release at the moment (though apparently they are working on one)

Try it with a fresh SD Card, it could be that something else on your SD Card is causing it.

I honestly don't have a favourite, because I find the majority of them really fun to play as (even characters that I never really enjoyed playing as before).

My favorite is the Triforce (Excluding Toon Link) xD This is the first time I can play the whole 3 and feeling powerful. Other than them, both Ike and Marth, And Pit/Sonic

Yeah, some extra hacks tend to throw things into the mix that can break stuff.  Glad it's working now!

It seems pretty alright, but I'm more of a Project M guy.

To be honest the two modsets aren't really comparable because their objectives are so different.  I have mixed feelings about Project M.  On one hand I love the fact that they're incorporating all this amazing tech skill that was in Melee to make the game feel more competitive.  But on the other hand, I hate how they're making every character play just like they did in Melee.  Did they really have to go out of their way (for example) to turn Falco back into even more of a Fox clone?  I just feel that people with that much talent in PSA and animating should do something a little more different and creative.  Give the characters new tricks.  Project M I believe is meant to act like a sequel to Melee, but a sequel needs to improve upon the gameplay mechanics of its predecessor not copy-paste them exactly.

That's the reason I really like Brawl-.  It feels fresh and new rather than something that I played 7 or so years ago with a presentation buff. But again, each to his own.

My reasons for disliking Project M in underline.

Not even the presentation buff, people are bringing back EVERY old graphic from Melee, from stages to items (god knows why, no one gives a crap about them in tournaments) to the characters themselves.

Melee clowns are the definition of insane obsessed idiots that don't know when to let go of something to let in something new. >_>

indeed, I agree with that, I have a friend who says melee is better, but, if he would play brawl- or brawl+ or just normal Brawl and give it a change, he would defenitly like brawl as much as I do, I mean melee is old, I want to  play the new stuff =D
but its not that I don't like melee, I think its one of the best games ever, because of the changes they made from SSB64 to melee, and just because its awesome etc. but brawl, it has so many things I wanted in melee that I HAD to like ityou know xD
but... Imma stop typing, I used to be a non-long typing person ¬¬
and yeah this is just what I think of some stuff :P

What I learned through my brief experience with Melee that when you get right down to it, recreating Falco's prowess in Melee with his Brawl moves isn't really possible. The Brawl moves work great for Brawl, but not PM. Not to mention the huge crap-storm they would suffer from NOT changing Falco back to his Melee form.

They are improving things, but with subtlety and with buffing the rest of the roster just a bit to keep up with Melee top tiers.

Moving on, I can't judge minus since I haven't played the newest build for obvious reasons.
That, and I don't conform my stage roster to codesets stage list, the codesets stage list conform to my stage roster and gets absored.

heheheh.

Apologies for reviving this, but to those who don't know:

Brawl Minus 2.1.1 has been released AND there is a PAL release!

NTSC Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?89uqbpacxo898fw
PAL Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?cokx9rduz7z4u1j

Note that the PAL version isn't an EXACT equivalent, but I quote "it's really close"

What are the differences between PAL and NTSC?

What are the differences between PAL and NTSC?

I'm not sure.  One of the differences I definitely know though is that it apparently always desynchs Wifi (which is a bit of a bummer) and quite a few things were probably removed like interface hacks etc since the download's file size is about 20MB less (all the movesets are the same though).

Dude, that's, like, pretty damn awesome.

But, like, wait... the only thing that, like, really matters are the PSAs, right? Because otherwise, I'd have to, like, do an annoying amount of work to do, before I can, like, properly use it with my hacks and Riivolution... >_>

No. As broken as B- is, there are limits as to how broken a character would be. >_>;; This isn't MUGEN.

Also, lack of interface hacks is probably explained with the whole "lol different file name", or more accurately, "lol no giga/alloys".

I've heard about some ganondoken? What is it and how can I use that attack, or is it just a final smash?

The Ganondoken is Ganondorf's new projectile fireball.  When you do his Neutral B, you can release it by holding B instead of just pressing it (by holding B, you also disable the regular punching hitbox).  The fireball is slow moving and multihit but it's huge.  In 2.1 they tweaked the graphics of it so it looks badass now.

It works online, though there are some things that can cause desyncs.  Also obviously you'll both need to be running the same build and stuff.

The main matchmaking site that I know of for mods is fsmash.org
