Title: Would like suggestions on my Super Mario Bros. 3 stage!
Post by: TruePhilosopher on June 18, 2011, 01:06:08 AM
Since it's for the community, I want to ask here to see what people like.  I plan on making 2 different versions of the stage.  It is going to be the area where you fight Bowser.

The two versions will be one with non-breakable blocks and one with breakable blocks (as soon as I figure out the animation process to do so. Also just a heads up, yes I realize I can only do 9 breakable blocks tops).  The non-breakable version is done and I'll go ahead and say the stage is mostly in 3-D so no worries about this being a cheap 2-D stage (not that all 2-D stages are bad).  The opinions I want are what weren't in the original version.  Such as should there be a moving platform underneath the stage?  Or maybe some on the sides?  Should I add in any extra art from the Mario universe?  Or should I simply leave it as is and release the first version?  And just so everyone knows the picture is NOT my stage! (As if that's not obvious haha) Thanks to anyone who lends an opinion!

Edit:  Also another heads up, the current layout is a Final Destination-ish type stage, as in it has a single platform currently...for the most part.

Yay... More Bowser themed stages in Brawl! XD

As for opinions for the stage, I'm not sure what to say yet. I think an actual pic of your stage should be added so we can give more constructive input on it.  ;)

Either way though, I think you should release V1 of your stage ASAP, I want to play on this... lol

It would be awesome if you can make another part of the stage, you know, uhnder those blocks xD
then when those boxes are destroyed you can go down and fight there, but its just an idea :P

Make the other version of the stage, too.

...the version where you fly over the brick wall on the left.

That should be awesome if you put a Bowser SM3 (example Bowser by Lensho) and bellow the camera he destroy the block.

you can put a mario model fighting that bowser behind the stage like pkm trainer and animate them fighting and animating end when bowser falls off the stage and break the blocks.

maybe its too much make all but maybe use some of my ideas.

This was taken in BrawlBox, however it gives you the general idea of what to expect.

Since I'm limited to 9 blocks I'll have 4 breakable on top, 3 in the middle and 2 on the bottom.  I think that would be for the best.  As far as the ideas have been so far I'm liking them!  An area beneath the stage would be interesting as it would be similar to Spear Pillar.  Also the part to the left would be interesting, but I'll have to expand the stage boundaries to do so.  I always loved that you could nerf Bowser's fire to puffs of smoke by doing that trick xD.  Anyways including SMB3 Bowser would be too epic for words haha, I just have to figure out the best way to incorporate him.  Hope everyone likes how it looks so far btw!

Update Edit:  I will be including a .brstm file of this song:

I replied in the help topic as well, but I'll post it here just in case.

Thank you very much!  :af2:

Expanding the stage is a easy thing to do. Do you think I should expand it by one or two extra blocks on each side? I want this stage to be as good as possible for nostalgia and gameplay.

just resizer anything not add more blocks but make them abit bigger

Title: Re: Would like suggestions on my Super Mario Bros. 3 stage!
Post by: TruePhilosopher on June 19, 2011, 02:44:00 PM
Ah that's not too hard either.  I'll try .mdl0 resizer and if that doesn't work I'll edit them manually tonight.

Edit:  I have now resized the stage to be more spacious to Brawl on!  It's not a whole lot larger, but it is enough I think.  If it's not just let me know guys!  :D

Also mdl0 resizer is a pain in the butt with so many models to resize!  :srs:

I am glad that we have such a program, but it'd be nice if it did everything (or had the option to do everything) in a .brres file.

...
You can scale it with animations, you know...

Make the stage a walk-off. Have it replace 75m, and I THINK you can use a Bowser sprite to occasionally smash down the ground. That may be too difficult to implant, so you should just make it a walkoff and have it replace 75m since it's a stage nobody uses.

Update time!  Mewtwo2000 was gracious enough to help me out with my breakable blocks dilemma! Now all I have to do is some fine tuning and I'll upload it to the Vault.  :af2:

More than likely I'll have to upscale the stage a bit to suit the breakable addition, but I'm sure no one will mind that haha.

How the hell did you just get a pro to work on a project not even open for like 2 weeks and yet back on our MGS Request thread, which was like open for two years, we can't seem to get anyone to help?

I guess I'll have to ask Mewtwo then...

I just had a very simple request haha.  He's super busy, though so I don't know if he'd be up to something as large as making a whole new MGS stage or not, but I guess it never hurts to ask.

On a more on track note...Just to let everyone know the things I have to do for the next release are:

Increase the stage size.
I may mess with the camera and spawn zones.
Also I might add in some new platforms and possibly animations of some sort (this is a huge maybe >_>).

Don't you know how to add custom sprites?
Make the stage similiar to 75m?

How about adding Bowser in the background or something?

That'd be pretty cool.

Post by: TruePhilosopher on June 23, 2011, 06:23:02 PM
Yeah Bowser is definitely getting added. (Maybe as a statue?)

Also I'm probably going to dramatically increase the size of the blocks so that they are as large as the characters width. (I would match it to the largest character Bowser.)

Post by: Gamma Ridley on June 23, 2011, 06:27:31 PM
As a statue...?

Why not just have him alive and moving around or something?

Or how about this: you have him do his down B animation on the breakable blocks and make them "brake" by scaling them down to zero when he hits them?

That'd be pretty cool, if a bit technical.

Title: Re: Would like suggestions on my Super Mario Bros. 3 stage!
Post by: TruePhilosopher on June 23, 2011, 06:39:44 PM
I could do that, but I'd have to link the animations and take the breakability (that's not a word >_>) away from the blocks.  I can do animations, but I'm not stellar with them just yet.

What if you made separate versions? Like Mewtwo2000 does, y'know?

One with breakable blocks and Bowser in the background doing whatever, and one with a more interactive Bowser.

Title: Re: Would like suggestions on my Super Mario Bros. 3 stage!
Post by: TruePhilosopher on June 23, 2011, 07:18:24 PM
I could do that.  All in all that would make 3 separate versions of my stage. xD

Variety is always a good thing. :]

If you need any help with animations or something, I'd be happy to help.

Thank you very much!  I'll probably be calling on you when the time comes.  :P

Update!

Just to let everyone know, I'll be leaving on Saturday the 25th to go to the beach!  8)

As for production this means it will be put on hold for a bit, but no worries after I get back it shall resume. At any rate thanks to everyone who has supported me and my endeavors so far and I look forward to seeing all of you again in a week!  ;D

His Down B animation wouldn't look too good on a such a low graphic stage...
I think it's better to just take an actual picture of the Bowser on the actual stage and do that, much easier and less worry.
It would look better too.

Bowser pouncing sprite:

Don't forget to add transparency around the sprite...
Maybe I'll add another sprite if I can find one...

Alright after a brief journey into the voice editing realm I'm ready to get back on track!  Now a question for all those who care.  Do you think the blocks should permanently break or respawn?

I'm going to start upscaling everything after I decide this.

Also for my next stage I'm thinking about something maybe in the Zelda universe, but I'm open to suggestions of course!

Respawning blocks :D

haha but uhm, like, if they're all gone, then after 20 seconds or so, they respawn
exept when you were planning on making another room under the blocks, then you should let them be broken :P
