Title: Seriously though, how do I load Ocarina codes in Riivolution?
Post by: cultistofvertigo on August 14, 2011, 04:26:45 AM
I'm not sure how I've managed to miss the answer to this question after all this time poking around all the different forums and help sites and video tutorials and just plain trial and error, but it's become clear to me that:

1. Riivolution CAN run Brawl with Ocarina codes enabled and
2. I must be missing something stupid and obvious since I can never see anyone answering this question, instead talking about things that are way over my head.

So, I made an account just so you can all point out what silly Noob-Saibot mistake I made and laugh at me. Alright, here's the specs:

What I'm trying to to: Run Brawl from a NTSC-U disc on a non-hardmodded Wii with textures and Mewtwo via Riivolution, but also with Ocarina codes (and I've got hbc, but I just run Riivolution from it's own channel).

Here's what I'm doing: I followed the complete noob-saibot's guide to brawl hacking to a T , all the file swapping works fine. My codeset doesn't have a filepatch as I specifically took it out after installing Riivolution. I have in my ROOT/riivolution folder a SSBBfiles xml, an ocarina xml, and codehandler.bin. The ocarina xml is exactly like it was when I downloaded it: with RSBE01.gct written in the appropriate places.

I've tried all "ocarina handlers," by the virtue of never being told:
1. what they mean
2. what they do
3. which one to pick

None of them work ever. And I've seen some places tell me it doesn't matter which one I use. I've also had some places tell me to boot it up through the hbc, but this makes no difference. Here, I'll show you exactly what I have on my SD card:

apps:
- - - Gecko1931:
- - - - - - meta.xml
- - - - - - icon.png
- - - - - - boot.elf
- - - - - - Thumbs.db
- - - riivolution
- - - - - - readme.txt
- - - - - - meta.xml
- - - - - - icon.png
- - - - - - boot.elf
- - - - - - Thumbs.db
codes
- - - RSBE01.gct
private - - > all the junk. Mewtwo, some character textures, custom stage textures, and a common5 pac
riivolution
- - - SSBBfiles.xml
- - - ocarina.xml
- - - codehandler.bin
- - - config:
- - - - - - RSBE.xml

I don't know what button to push here to make that neat little sub-window appear so I can copypaste you exactly what's in those xml's without taking up too much space. As it is, it is EXACTLY how I downloaded it from the link on this forum. I've also had, at one point, the ocarina and codehandler files in BOTH the root and apps riivolution folder. It made, you might guess, absolutely no difference.

With just the file swapping enabled, Riivolution runs like a dream, so i'm anxious to get the codes werking too. But when I pick a "ocarina handler," whatever that even means, it just goes black and the Wii makes little whirring noises and I have to hold down the power button to turn it off. I'm really sure what more I can tell you.

Any advice that's actually new or addresses the problem i'm actually having would be appreciated.

What Xml do you use and you may be putting the gct in the wrong place.

I'm not understanding. I just showed you the entire SD card's contents.

I'm using the aforementioned ocarina.xml that I downloaded from this site, and whatever else is listed there.

The RSBE01.gct is in codes/RSBE01.gct where every tutorial/faq/help section I could find told me to put it, and, more importantly, where the ocarina xml is told it is.

If I move the gct into the root, will that make a difference? Do I need to move it to the root and edit the xml accordingly?

I think it's just your gct file.

I don't know why, but when I used riivo and using codes, I could only use a very few amount of codes, or some codes just weren't working with riivo...

Soo, make another gct file with less codes and see if it works.

I had the same problem about a week ago when I made the switch to Riivolution, but then I just downloaded BeyondYou's Riivolution (http://www.mediafire.com/?wr2m5x6u4g4casl). You'll have to place the files like they would be placed with Gecko, but it still supports sounds, movies, ect. The readme explains everything you'll need to know ;)

Rename "RSBE01.gct" to "Riivolution.gct"

Don't rename it, make sure to use the gxflush option.

Don't rename it, make sure to use the gxflush option.

As stated earlier, which "ocarina handler" I use makes no difference. They all take me to a blank screen and I have to reset.

I remember hearing about renaming the gct to riivolution, specifically on questions relating to the PAL region. Honestly, I can't even remember if I tried it or not, but I do know that, again, the xml is told to look for "RSBE01.gct."

As for the file itself, it's pretty small. It's just a CSS with independent pokemon and ZSS, no tripping, unrestricted button mapping, neon sheilds, and... oh, no stale moves, which doesn't really bother me, it's just something that made sense at the time.

I can strip it down a bit clicking off one of the codes for Giga Bowser since he's not on the CSS, and the no stale moves thing, so I'll try that as well.

I'm about to test pixels' suggestion first, though, as it fills me with the most hope. *crosses fingers*

and also, thanks for all the help so far.

UPDATE: pixels' additional download werked. Other than some less than minor hiccups (accidentaly used an old CSS code that didn't have Mewtwo, needed to rename common5, freeze during some nonsense about stickers) everything is how it should be. Today marks a victory in the blood-stained fields of khor'al-hai, where the legions of shal-gorroth do fester and blah blah blah.

Thanks guys! (or more accurately, guy) :elatedemoticon:
