Title: Post-PSA Tournament Usage List/Discussion
Post by: Lightning Edge on August 19, 2011, 11:32:22 PM
Hey guys! dispite having only a few participents, The tournament turned out pretty well.

The tournament PSA pack is still downloadable over at the Online Gaming boards if ya want it.

I had a tier list, but some of the higher ups felt that it wasn't time for a tier list.

So i've decided to make a usage list as Eternal Yoshi suggested.

The Usage List:

Overused: Shadow, Dissidia Cloud, Zero

Standerd: Mewtwo, SMBZ Mario, Aura Knight

Borderline: Dark Samus, Viewtiful Joe, Spider-Man

Underused: Athena, Wisp, Ridley, Jet Diddy,  Snake, Dark Pikachu, Storm Fox, Raccoon Luigi, Sephiroth, Mega Man

Neverused: Everyone else

Explanations:

Zero:

Pros:
Excellent mobility
Great approaching options
Combos are very easy to do
Great mix-ups
Almost impossible to keep off of the stage
Zero Buster can be used as a combo starter
Can ledgeguard with ease

Cons:
Light.....very light
Down B kind of ruins Zero's mobility
Very few killing moves
Killing moves are slowish

Tips: Use the Side-B to get around. Zero's normal run is pretty slow, and limits his combo potential. Oh yeah....one last thing.
Don't get hit!!!!!

Dark Samus:

Pros:
Pretty speedy
Some disjointed hitboxes
Down-B has a very powerful sweetspot hit
Near impossible to approach
Can set up combos extremely easily
Powerful D-air
Neutral-B is a great finisher
Pretty heavy
Surprisingly racks up damage pretty fast

Cons:
Next to no knockback moves
Damage output is lacking
Can't handle keepaway and zoning characters
Recovery doesn't really save her

Tips: Use Down-B and Down Smash to set up combos easily.

Shadow:

Pros:
Really fast
Very strong for a speed character
Can handle any type of character
Excellent recovery
Chaos Spear is a powerful projectile
Has a counter
Tons of killing moves
Doesn't have a lot of end lag in moves

Cons:
One of the lightest characters
Has a slight problem with zoning characters

Tips: Don't spam Down Smash. You're just asking for it.

Mewtwo

Pros:
Can move around the stage very fast
Teleport can be used to dodge and punish attacks
Combos are easy to start
Down-B sets up combos for grounded foes
Every Smash has a lot killing potential
Down-B allows you to charge Smashes at will
Shadow Ball is a great projectile and combo finisher
Great jumpintg height
Way better than he was on the actual Melee game
Flight is a welcome bonus

Cons:
Extremely light
Has problems with zoning characters

Tips: Use Teleports to dodge attacks instead of rolling away. Mewtwo's dodge is painfully slow.

Viewtiful Joe

Pros:

Moves very fast in the air
Has great priority with attacks in the air
D-air causes bounce, which leads to combos
Voomerangs come out fast and causes tumbling
Up-B is an excellent combo finisher and killing move
His height wrecks opponents's combos
Extremely hard to hit
Knockback moves galore

Cons:
Short reach
Yet, another light character
Grounded Neutral-B and Down-B are just asking to get punished
No long reaching projectiles

Tips: Stay in the air as much as possible. That's where Joe truely shines.

Fighter Kirby

Pros:
Master of combos and mix-ups
Racks up damage extremly fast
Up-B has some invincibility frames, and has good knockback
Side-B is the main combo starter
Kirby finally has a better form of a projectile (Hold Neutral-B)
Side-B can be used to approach the opponent safely
Can stay in the air for a long period
Pretty good knockback over-all
Hard to land a hit on (if you use him right)

Cons:
just how many light characters are there?
Hold Neutral-B takes a while to charge to full power
Air Down-B can get you killed if you aren't careful
Keepaway characters are a bane

Tips: Side B is is good for approaching. Use it wisely.

Drako Yoshi

Pros:
Pretty heavy
Loads of killing moves
Side-B is deadly to grounded foes
Has one of the best Up-B moves in the game
Has some invincibility frames in some attacks

Cons:

Slower than most
Heaviness is combo bait
Neutral B is slow and keeps Yoshi stunned for a bit

Tips: Avoid getting comboed. Nuff said

SMBZ Mario:

Pros:
Can switch playstles in the middle of battle
Very speedy in Cape mode
Cape mode is best for starting combos
The bane of heavy and big characters
Has a better projectile than normal Mario
Excellent recovery (Up-B) in Cape mode
Metal Mario Taunt is great in some cases

Cons:
Metal Mario Can mess you up in some situations
D-Air can get you killed if not careful
Air moves aren't very powerful

Tips: Stay in Cape mode as much as possible. It's better for competitive play.

More coming soon!

Hmm...don't you think it's rather early to be setting down a tier list when we've only had one day of the tourney?

A suggestion - since there was only 1 tourney you should hold more of them before you make a tier list. In the meantime, you should probably not use tiers.

Instead, you should base the list on usage like so:
Overused
Standard
Borderline
Underused
Never Used

Until you get more results and hold more.

Well i've tested these against tons of other people online and offline.

But if that's how you guys feel, i'll just use the usage method. Let me alter it. One second.
