Title: A "tutorial" for noobs. (Just an add on to the sticky)

THIS IS NOW A TUTORIAL ON HOW TO START GETTING STARTED. BECAUSE WE APPARENTLY NEED SUCH A THING.

HOW TO GET THOSE FOLDERS INTO YOUR SD CARD.

I'm seeing a lot (read: A LOT) of newbies starting to mod their Brawl, but they have trouble with the directories.

For example:

Tutorial - "Costumes go in:
SD:/private/wii/app/RSBE/pf/Fighter/[character's name]/

And a response nowadays is:
"I don't have a pf folder in my SD card? What do I do?" or "How do I get those directories?"


So, without further ado,

1) Get as far as you can along the file path specified (for example, pf/)

2) Right click anywhere in the RSBE folder.

3) Select "New>" and choose "Folder".

4) Rename your New Folder into "pf", or whatever you need it to be.

5) TADA! You now have a folder you've never seen before! Because folders don't magically create themsevles; otherwise, your card should have a folder for EVERY SINGLE THING ON THE 'NET.


Was that so hard?

HOW TO GET COPIES OF YOUR FILES.

1) Right-click the folder/file in question.

2) Select "Copy".

3) Go where you want the file to be, right click in that folder, then select "Paste".

HOW TO FIX FREEZING IN 1P MODES WHEN USING MODEL SWAPS/IMPORTS.

1) Delete the .pac files which are responsible for that particular costume/texture/whatever.

2) Open up your .pcs in BrawlBox.

3) Save your file as an "Archive Pair".

4) Done! You now have a working .pac file which shouldn't make your 1P mode go ape****.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD HACKS.

1) Click the Brawl Vault icon (you know, the red Smash Ball near the top of the page), or just click here (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php).

2) Locate the hack you're searching for.

3) Click on the hack's name.

4) You'll be taken to MediaFire, RapidShare, MegaUpload, or whatever file hosting site the uploader chose.

5) Follow instructions on the page.

6) When you click "Download" (or whatever it'll say), remember where the file is being saved, or just choose where you want it to be saved, and rename it whatever you want.

7) Congratulations. You just downloaded something. :srs:  Go nuts.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD ORIGINAL FILES.

1) Guess what? We're going back to Brawl Vault (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php) again. You know, that big resource where all the hacks are? You never thought original files would be there, too, did you?

2) Above the icons that say "Character",  "Items", and stuff, there are smaller blue icons. Click the one that says "Resources".

3) Everything you'll need is there (except for downloads for paid programs/pirating tools/etc). Scroll down to the bottom, and you'll see "Original Brawl Files". Choose whichever Data Partition you need. NTSC-U will be the North American copy (and wherever else uses it). PAL will be for European and Australian versions.
Note that just because you downloaded every file there does NOT mean you will be able to create a backup game.

4) Once you chose, browse through the files and find what you need. Make note of where each file is, because that's where you'll need to put the edited files on your SD card. Your SD doesn't have those folders? Scroll up on the page and read the first tutorial.

5) Keep browsing if you need more files, but you're basically done.

HOW TO DO MATH USING THE HEXADECIMAL SYSTEM.

1) You may get instructions on a code like:
Individual Character No Result Data:
00AD80YY 00000000
YY = Character ID + 0x68

2) Let's say we want Diddy Kong to have no results data. Here, the Character ID would be 1B.

3) Open up the Calculator program on your computer and set it to "Hex" instead of "Dec".

4) Input 1B. Then the +. Then 68.

5) Done! The new value is what you would plug into the YY in the code.

6) Remember that the digits for the hexadecimal system are:
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F
So for example, when you add 1+9 in hex, that equals A, not 10. F+1 would equal 10.

HOW TO FIX FREEZING ON TRANSFORMING CHARACTERS.

This is for those transforming characters. Occasionally, the game may freeze when becoming Samus->ZSS (or vice versa), Giga Bowser->Bowser, etc.
This is due to a bad .pac file used for textures.
So, the fix.

1) Delete the bad .pac file. Note that the .pac  file will always be larger than its .pcs counterpart.

2) Open the .pcs with BrawlBox.

3) Save the file as an Archive Pair (if you can't do this, please research a bit more about general computer usage before continuing to modify your game).

4) Place the files in the appropriate place.

HOW TO GET HACKS TO WORK.

So you downloaded them, stuck them in your SD, but they don't work?

I personally think that people that don't know how to use basic features on a computer shouldn't be trying to hack anything.

@L.     lol xD we all need to start somewhere. i had to walk my friend thru the whole process he knows almost nothing about computers but he started getting it after a few tries. tho some people just need to learn to look thru the forums. i think someone actually made a blank directory even for download.

Why can't they just read the tutorials? If they just took the time on reading al of those instead of asking every singel thing about brawl hacking.

I mean, when I started with brawl hacking, I searched for tutorials and guides... Why can't they do that?  -_-

Except that no tutorial (that I'm aware of) actually explains how to get the folders, which is understandable, as you should at the very least know how to make folders. :srs:

Btw, you could also include how to download files/where you can download original brawl files, because, all those new people aren't paying attention to that little resource button thing...

Oh and sometimes, I hear about people not knowing how to download hacks...-_-'

So, not a tutorial on how to do stuff, but a tutorial on how to start on getting started.

I know this is serious and all, but still made me laugh. You should also include or mention that files must match the names. example FitGanon00.pcs instead of Akuma.pcs.

I'm having trouble with sc_selcharacter_en, sc_selcharacter2_en,  and sc_selmap_en! My hacking worked fine untill I put those into it, now it just freezes when choosing "Group" to test the hack files in a fight. Please help! I'm asking this in different areas to increase my chances of getting my problem solved. BTW, if it helps to say, I use Riivolution. And my common# files (common3_en and common5_en) are in the system folder.

Your problem is probably due to the fact that the files are too large now. Use an image editing program and set the colors to "indexed" instead of "RGB". Resize the pictures if you must.
