Title: Several download links containing viruses
Post by: nothunky on June 01, 2013, 10:39:53 AM
I'm sorry but this is getting frustrating. I've pretty much had to stop downloading from brawlbox, because several of the files or the mirrors had a virus or were flagged as dangerous. The worst example of this happened when I tried to download around 8 different mods in one day, and all of them were stopped because the mirrors were dangerous. In all cases where I decided to download the file anyway, it was flagged for a virus and had to be deleted.

I want to know is it just me, or is the amount of viruses in the released content increasing dramatically?
When I first started using brawlvault, everything was fine, but now it seems like almost every mod I try to download (from this site only) has some sort of malware in it. Again I must emphasize that all of the web threats are coming from links posted on this site to user created mods on mediafire. Luckily, the links to the default brawl files have not been affected yet. Any help would be really appreciated.

I bet you're using Norton or McAfee, aren't you.

Yeah, but in some cases even the dumbass router software is saying the uploader's adress behind mediafire is dangerous. I've downloaded mods for SEVERAL other games before, and this is the only site where issues have really came up consistently. I've also been able to download several mods from brawl vault in the past without problems. Somehow I don't think these are false positives, if that is what you are suggesting. Do you know anyone else who has these issues if they are false positives?

Also many of the files that are flagged as "infected" appear to be fairly old (like at least 2 years old since being modified). Is it possible that something could have corrupted the files which were hosted on mediafire for a long time? Sorry I don't know too much about this and just want to know what exactly is going on, or if there is a way to fix this.

My router software says mediafire is dangerous too.
I download stuff off it regardless. It's always a false positive.

What you should do is download it and have a virus scanner scan the file. If it finds a virus, then have it remove the file. I can personally vouch that AVG Free is good for this (it's what I use), but I don't want to start a virus scanning program argument.

All I can say is that the files you're trying to download are definitely false positives. If anyone here can actually make a virus and upload it to the Brawlvault, my hat's off to them (not in a good way though). I'm a programmer and I don't even know how viruses are made.

That's the problem though. Some of them I did download anyway, and I did run a scan on the file with antivirus, and it did come up as infected in every instance. There are some files I can download here without issue, but quite a few of them turn up badly.

Then get a different antivirus, because it's giving you incorrect scan results.
Your current antivirus is a liar.

You really think people are trying to give you a virus on Brawl Vault? Get a new antivirus, AVG and Avast are probably the best.

Avast? Hahaha, no.

Either use AVG, Nod32 or something, those are smart enough not to recognize non-viruses as viruses.

Been using Avast for years and it has never told me a file was a virus when it wasn't.

Ok well thanks for the responses everyone. I'll try that and see what happens.

AVG is the way to go if you want a free anti-virus.

There is also Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It is also a very good antivirus program.

That's weird- I've never had any warnings OR viruses from Brawlvault. I think you're getting false positives.

Meh, BrawlVault wouldn't be the place to have viruses. Logically speaking, you want viruses to be in readily accessible stuff such as torrents for some programs, not in this site, unless some idiot is bored enough to do it. Even then, it will get reported regardless.
