Title: Help1 Game Crashes when I change any portraits!
Post by: Aron on April 17, 2016, 01:08:18 AM
So I'm not sure if this is where I post this but there's a problem I'm having. When ever I change any of the characters portraits, the game crashes on the CSS. Did I do something wrong? (I'm on dolphin, i don't have a Wii)

So the answer to that would be no. However, I will still try to help despite that it's in the wrong section, and I would suggest that you simply move this thread to the appropriate section.

What are the dimensions of the new portraits that you were using, were they CSPs, CSS icons, BPs, or another kind of portrait, did you use BrawlBox to replace the portraits, and how did you apply the new portrait(s) to Dolphin? Did you use use Wii Scrubber? A virtual SD card?

I'm not sure what the dimensions are. They were CSPs and CSS icons. I used BrawlBox and I used WiiScrubber

If you open up the common5 in BrawlBox, and go to the portraits, the right panel should have the following rows:

Width
Height
Format
LevelOfDetail
HasPalette
OriginalPath
User Data
UserEntries

Across from Width and Height, you'll want specific numbers; for example, CSPs would need 128 for the Width and 160 for the Height.

so I went ahead and checked and the images I wanna use are the right size you said. So that's not the problem

Would you mind uploading or emailing me the .pac and/or brres files, so I can take a look at them?

Actually , The battle portraits (the one in game) dont crash the game but changing stuff like the CSS icon, the Series icon and CSPs will cause it to crash

I just tested both of those images in Dolphin, and it worked fine. Although, they don't have Alpha, and need that, or else the background will be white instead of the player slot color. Would you please upload your common5, so that I can narrow down further what the cause is?

I meant with the portraits in it. That's just the regular Brawl common5. I need your custom one that you put the CSPs, CSS icons, etc. in.

So, I just tested that in Dolphin on my end, and it worked perfectly fine, meaning, that you must have done something incorrect about using them with Dolphin. Might I ask how you used them in Dolphin? Like, for example, did you use Wii Scrubber, and if so, did you "Replace" the common5_en.pac in the "system" folder of the Data Partition 2 to use it?

yes, that is what I did

Well, you must have done something else, in addition, then, because I just did that, and it worked 100% glitch-and-freeze-free fine. Are you sure you didn't "Scrub" it or anything? Because if you do that, it will probably screw something up.

I don't think I scrubbed anything

Well, either you did something wrong, or you're just really unlucky; you see, I've played on Dolphin enough to know that it will occasionally just "freeze" silently, regardless of if you even are using any mods; it especially likes to do this freeze when you first press a button at the "Super Smash Bros. Brawl Press Start" screen, or after a second or two after entering the Character Select Screen.

Alternatively(I just realized), it might be a different version of the common5 from the Brawl that you're using; for example, the common5 that you uploaded works with my ISO, which is an NTSC one; which type is yours? NTSC as well? If you right-click the ISO in Dolphin, and go to Properties->Info, it should tell you what country if you don't know.

It's says the country is USA. So it is NTSC

Then I dunno. Go over these steps, though, just to make sure 100% that you're doing everything exactly right.

Put the .iso and the .pac in a folder for modifying the .iso.(It can be the same folder as for Dolphin games, but doesn't have to be)

Put WiiScrubber in the same folder as the .iso and the common5.pac. Open WIIScrubber.exe. Click "Load ISO" and select the Brawl .iso. It will give warning messages, but you can ignore these, as they won't affect this. Just hold down "Enter" until the messages go away. Expand "Data Partition 2" and "System" to find the common5 file. It will have a bunch of digits and stuff next to it. You don't need to know any of those, though, so just right-click it and click "Replace". Select your new common5.pac(I'd recommend not changing the name when you extract it at all) Now it should say something about re-compiling and give the same warning messages when you initially opened the .iso. It should automatically save the replacement when you finish pressing "Enter" for all of the warnings and the .iso loads.

Alternatively, you might be using an outdated or corrupt Wii Scrubber version, which might not work. Would you mind uploading your Wii Scrubber version, so that I can test if the program is the problem? Because if it is, then I'll upload my version for you.
