Title: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution
Post by: JDub on July 22, 2010, 06:12:55 PM
ToonJDub's
Riivolution Guide

This forum is lacking in a guide for Riivolution, so here yah go.

Table of Contents

1. The Setup
1.1 Using Brawl+, Brawl-, BBrawl, Project M, etc.
    1.2 The Riivolution Channel

2. Using Ocarina Codes

3. F.A.Q

4. Things to Note
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. The Setup
(Note: This is uneeded if your loading BBrawl, Brawl+, Brawl -, etc.)
Setting up Riivolution is fairly easy. First, download Riivolution (http://rvlution.net/riivolution.zip) and extract the apps folder to the root of the SD Card, or merge it if you have other apps. Then create another folder in the root of your SD card and name it Riivolution. Next, download this .xml (http://rvlution.net/riivolution/images/5/5c/SSBBfiles.xml) and put it in the Riivolution folder. Riivolution uses .xml's to tell it where the files it needs patch are and what there are called. There are a few .xml's, but the one I provided is one that uses the same directories and file names as the File Patch Code, only the files that save with an _en at the end need the _en. Now, make a folder, name it config, and put this .xml (http://www.mediafire.com/?439nsv0p2qpdecp) in it. You should be all set up for loading all you files for Riivolution.

1.1 Using Brawl+, Brawl-, BBrawl, Project M, etc.
To load mods like Brawl+, download this .xml (http://www.mediafire.com/?jrnjkjiiklv), place it in Riivolution folder and name it modlauncher.xml and dowload codehandler.bin (http://smashmods.com/downloads/brawlplus/codehandler.bin) and place it in the Riivolution folder as well. Now, this .xml does not have File Patch Code support, so the files go in a different location. You can also toggle between Brawl+, Brawl-, and Project M.

File Locations
=========== Where do I place my mods? ===================

X:/brawlmods/bbrawl/ - Balanced Brawl. RSBE01.gct goes in this folder, as well as all of the other "pf" files.

X:/brawlmods/brawlminus/ - Brawl Minus. RSBE01.gct goes in this folder, as well as all of the other "pf" files.

X:/brawlmods/brawlplus/ - Brawl Plus. RSBE01.gct goes in this folder, as well as all of the other "pf" files.

X:/brawlmods/custom1/ - Custom Set #1. RSBE01.gct goes in the root of this folder. Contains "fighter",
"info", "info2", "menu", "menu2", "module", "stage" and "system" folders as well.

X:/brawlmods/custom2/ - Custom Set #2. RSBE01.gct goes in the root of this folder. Contains "fighter",
"info", "info2", "menu", "menu2", "module", "stage" and "system" folders as well.

X:/brawlmods/projectm/ - Project: M. RSBE01.gct goes in this folder, as well as all of the other "pf" files.

X:/brawlmods/vbrawl/ - Regular Brawl. RSBE01.gct goes in the root of this folder. Contains "fighter",
"info", "info2", "menu", "menu2", "module", "stage" and "system" folders as well.

=========== Where do I place my music? ===================

X:/brawlmods/music/ - Where you place "info.pac", and optionally, "smashbros_sound.brsar".
X:/brawlmods/music/strm/ - Where you place all of your BRSTM files to be used in game.

=========== Where do I place my textures? ================

X:/brawlmods/textures/fighter/ - All of the character textures go here, e.g. X:/brawlmods/textures/fighter/captain/FitCaptain00.pac
X:/brawlmods/textures/info/ - Anything that belongs in "info" goes in here.
X:/brawlmods/textures/menu/ - Anythin that belongs in "menu" goes in here.
X:/brawlmods/textures/menu2/ - Anything that belongs in "menu2" or "pfmenu2" goes in here.
X:/brawlmods/stages/ - All stage textures (pac) + any module files (rel) go here.

=========== How about my movies (THP files)? =============

X:/brawlmods/movies/ - Place any THP files you have in here.

Quoted from the modlauncher.xml instructions.

1.2 The Riivolution Channel
When your at the screen for Riivolution, you'll notice an install button. Basically, what this will do is install a channel to launch Riivolution.

2. Using Ocarina Codes
(Unneeded if loading Brawl+, Brawl-, BBrawl, Project M, etc.)
Ocarina codes are sometimes necessary for loading things like a CSS. But loading Ocarina codes, you need a separate .xml for it. Just download codehandler.bin (download above) and ocarina.xml (http://www.mediafire.com/?jzdvgtytimy), shove 'em in the Riivolution folder in the apps folder and the Riivolution folder in the root, put your RSBE01.gct in the codes folder like normal, and there, your codes are loaded.
NOTE: Do NOT use the File Patch Code when using Riivolution!

3. F.A.Q
Q. Why won't it let me save replays or snapshots to my SD Card?
    A. Riivolution ends up locking the SD Card to load the files. For a solution to the snapshot problem, just take the snapshot, save it to your Wii, start up brawl normally, and copy the snapshot to your SD card.

Q. Does Riivolution work with Back-Up's?
    A. No it does not.

4. Things to Note
 • There's no file size limit on any file to my knowledge, so go crazy.
 • When using Riivolution, .pac files that overpower another when using the FPC are reversed and, in my experience, cause freezing. To fix this, just put the file that is overpowered in the overpowering file (i.e replacing your custom sc_selmap.pac with the one in common5_en.pac)

(Credit to Midnite for some of the downloads and the info on the whole Brawl Mod thing in his guide. Never used stuff like Brawl+ :P.)

To add to all of this, when using the File Patch Code, you had to remove the _en part of file names before using them.

When using Riivolution, the _en part has to be added to certain files; Ex.: FitCaptain01, FitPokeTrainerFinal##, etc..  Of course, you can set up your XML document in a way so that even if the file lacks the _en, it would still be recognized.

The spoiler below contains an example XML document that I did up while doing some tests with Riivolution.

Next, download this .xml (http://rvlution.net/riivolution/images/5/5c/SSBBfiles.xml) and put it in the Riivolution folder. From what I dug up, you need to import that file into common5.pac in order to get it to work with Riivolution.

Right click, Save As. I think the thing is that .xml files can only open in Internet Explorer and since most of use here use Chrome or Firefox, we can't see them when we click the link.

I assume your using a mod like Brawl+? I'm pretty sure they go there. I've never used a mod like Brawl+ so I'm not 100% sure.

You can always reference my example XML document (http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=11743.msg172926#msg172926) that I did up on an earlier post.  You basically need to have an active hook in order for the Ocarina codes to work.

Is there an arrow up near the top of the screen? In this general area?
(Disregard this being Dead Space Extraction. Just found this pic of the internet.)
If there is, click it and you'll see something regarding ocarina. You'll have these options like V1Hook and stuff. I use V1Hook and it works fine  :P.

No, you don't. Come to think of it, are you using a mod like Brawl+ or just applying your own stuff.

Yeah that's what I have it on, and it is enabled. I don't know what the problem is. Am I supposed to fill in anything in the xml?

Where did you place codehandler.bin?  It has to be placed in the directory that your XML document will read it in.  This goes double for RSBE01.gct.

Well there's my problem. It's the GCT that happens to be misplaced.

Apparently not. I placed the GCT in the directory and I'm still getting nothing.

In the Riivolution file along with the codehandler, Orcania.xml, and Brawl.xml files.

Ok, now I know what the problem is. You were putting your codes in the wrong place. They just go in the codes folder like normal.

Great guide you got here, Toon. I would use Riivo for it's ability to replace more files than the FP code, but it doesn't support backups. A shame, really.

Not to those who own a copy of the game ;D. Filthy pirates.

Um...that's where I had them before.
You may be like me and have to but the RSBE01.gct in x:data/gecko/codes/. I don't know why it's like that for me, but you may have the same problem.

Title: Re: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution
Post by: BlazingBarrager on August 03, 2010, 11:52:31 AM
Yeah that's probably the problem. So I should just create a new folder like that from scracth or is there somewhere that has the file for download (I don't have an X drive if that's a requirement).

Title: Re: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution
Post by: JDub on August 03, 2010, 11:56:52 AM
Lol, X is just a place holder. It just takes the place of the sd card slot. For instance, mine is the F drive. Someone else may have it their E drive. But yes you should just make the new folders from scratch if they aren't already there.

Ooooooooooooooooooh! Ok. You've been naming the file wrong. Here's a guide on what you need to name them. (http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=6.0) I should also note that you need a .pcs as well if you want to see the texture in single player.

When I load riivolution it loads ssbb like normal but after that there is no options or anything.

I have a folder on my sd called riivolution with codehandler modlauncher and ssbbfiles inside.

I have the stage I want to load in brawlmods then vbrawl then stage the stage is called STGBUDOKAI.PAC

Title: Re: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution

It needs to be named STGFINAL.pac and it goes over Final Destination.

PCS files are basically compressed PAC files.  They're used to start matches.  After that, the PAC files are used.

Ok, put the codehandler.bin and the ocarina.xml in the Riivolution folder in the root as well.  That should fix it. The place I learned about how to use Riivolution, it never specified which Riivolution folder to put them in, so I put them in both, but I forgot to put them in the guide :P. But yeah, that should fix the problem.

I noticed file setup was not in this guide so let me do so.

Basic setup- First in the root of your SD card you need to make a folder named Brawlmods. Once you've done that go into that folder and make a folder for whichever brawl verison you want: Bbrawl (balanced brawl), Brawlplus, Brawlminus, vbrawl (regular brawl with codes), Custom1, and Custom2. Then place your fighters folder in whichever brawl folder you created. Example for brawl- characters Brawlminus>fighter>character folders. Your .gct file goes in whichever Brawl version you wish to play. Example RSBE01.gct for Balanced Brawl goes in the balanced brawl folder.

Music- goes as follows. brawlmods>Music>Strm>Brstm files here. That's all there is for music.

Stages- I haven't figured out how to get individual stages for each version of brawl so you'll just have to use the same stages for each version. The files go as follows: Brawlmods>stages>Stage files here.

I'll have to get Midnite to help me with the rest which includes Menu, info, and those sort of files.

-_- Did you even READ the guide?
download this .xml (http://rvlution.net/riivolution/images/5/5c/SSBBfiles.xml) and put it in the Riivolution folder. There are a few .xml's, but the one I provided is one that uses the same directories and file names as the File Patch Code, only the files that save with an _en at the end need the _en.

Ya 4 times. Just because brawl- and Brawl+ are in the menu doesn't mean you can play the games. You have to have the files for the games in the SD card. Otherwise it doesn't work. I've tried so I know what I'm talking about. Don't argue it won't help you.

:srs: First off, don't go talking that way to me, especially when you're wrong. Second,
To load mods like Brawl+, download this .xml (http://www.mediafire.com/?jrnjkjiiklv), place it in Riivolution folder and name it modlauncher.xml and dowload codehandler.bin (http://smashmods.com/downloads/brawlplus/codehandler.bin) and place it in the Riivolution folder as well.

Don't talk like you're big s**t. I bet you think you're bad *ss just because you can hack and it's the internet. No one is bad ass.

2) You need the files in your SD card so you can play Brawl+ and the others. Riivolution can't read what you don't have. You have to have both. You need the modlauncher and the files for the Brawl hacks in you SD card. You can't have one without the other. I don't take well to smart *sses. Ban me if you want to but I stand where I stand.

I know I just found them :P sorry I didn't see them. But I do have some useful info that can go with that list. If you want each individual file to be able to load it's individual characters put your folders in this order Brawlmods> Xbrawl>fighters>character folders. Most guides don't have that so when you put folders like this Brawlmods>fighter>character folder. It overrides every other fighter folder you may have.

Are there any other applications that will load custom songs, characters (not textures), and stages into Brawl besides Riivolution or Gecko OS? For some reason my wiimote always disconnects from the console when I start the Homebrew Channel and wont reconnect, so I need an application that supports the Gamecube Controller.

The Hombrew Channel supports the Gamecube controller, but you have to use the D-Pad, not the analog stick.

I know that you can navigate the HBC with the Gamecube controller, but I'm talking about the applications. Riivolution and Gecko OS only support the Wiimote. I can't operate them with the Gamecube Controller, I've tried.

You could always do some ISO patching, but I don't really know enough about that to tell you how to do it. Ask in the help section, someone in bound to know.

I think you only need to use one XML document for when the Brawl ISO is inserted into the Wii.  You can merge patches from different XML files into one XML file.  Refer to my example XML document for a reference.

http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=11743.msg172926#msg172926 (http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=11743.msg172926#msg172926)

Also, make sure that the formatting of your XML document is correct, as even one mistake will cause the file to not be read by Riivolution.

Now, just ASF1nk's CSS is jumbled up. But I'll fix the codes around soon. But I must say that the "hooks" option isn't showing. Do I still need it even though the textures/PSAs work?

It depends.  If you want to use the unrestricted camera, then you would have to activate your codes.  However, you do need to get hold of codehandler.bin before doing that.

If I can get the codes working my CSS won't be jumbled. So how do I get my RSBE01.gct not make it go to a black screen. Please help.

I've been having some problems with this method of file patching recently. Namely, the CSS. I have common5_en.pac in the correct folders and all, but it still won't load. The same goes for my .rel files. In Gecko they worked fine, but now the game just crashes when I try to load levels that use 'em.

Nice Guide. But one question: are you talking as if starting with an empty SD or with a file path on it?

Mostly with file patch on. The way I setup the guide was so people could seamlessly flow back and forth between Gecko and Riivolution. However, you could do this with an empty SD Card.

Thanks! Also how could I start this direct with Smash Stack? I do not have a hacked Wii so I use the Nonpermanant method.
Edit: Is the first XML a bad link? I don't get it.

That I'm not sure of. I personally never used, so I wouldn't know. However, if you know how to do it with Gecko, the same thing probably applies here as well.

You need to right click and "Save As..." for that one.

Thanks A LOAD.
CodeHandler should be placed as a .zip right?

No, you need to open the .zip

Okay But inside there seems to be another zip inside

Edit: I tried but inside is a GPZ(?)

Riivolution works just fine for me, but for some reason it won't load asf1nk's css or sss. I have both in common5_en.pac and I put that in X>brawlmods>custom1>system  but they won't load. Same goes for common3_en.pac

Using ShadowSnakes SSB4 Riivolution Loader btw.

In brawlmods name a file brawl+ and place Rsbeo1 and the fighter folder within.

Is this still the only way to do SFX hacks? :\

I just want Japanese voices for some of the characters...

Actually, I think there is a File Patch Code 4.1.Something, but it's incredibly glitchy, so Riivolution is the preferred method for SFX hacking.

Or I guess you could ISO hack...

No thank you...

Although actually, my Wii's disc motor died and I've been playing games off a USB stick instead, and that'd be much easier than burning a new disc...

Hmmmmm...

That could work, though you will need to convert your Brawl ISO into a .iso file first.  You better have some vacant space on your hard drive, since a dual-layered ISO uses 7.92 GB when uncompressed.  And of course, the hard drive's file system has to be NTFS; FAT and FAT32 won't work, due to the 4 GB limit for files.

Already done, as that's how I currently play Brawl.  It'd just be a matter of editing said ISO and replacing a file :O

so wait... do i need the gct in x:/brawlmods/vbrawl/rsbe01.gct or will riivolution work without the gct altogether cuz i dont like the gct codes

Title: Re: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution
Post by: JDub on February 19, 2011, 06:56:27 AM
Codes go in X:/Codes/RSBE01.gct just like they would if you were using Gecko OS. However, Riivolution works fine without codes.

Quick question: For the file patch code xml.file and the other file that is suppose to go in it i just open it with notepad copy that then put it in SSBBfiles.XML? that will make the file patch code to work?

W8 so your saying you need 2 of each file of codehandler, and orcarina? one in the riivo root folder and the other in the riivo app folder?

Title: Re: ToonJDub's Guide to Riivolution

no. just in the riivo app folder.

no. just in the riivo app folder.
but if you read the guide, it says to stick them in the riivo folder in your app folder, and the riivo folder in your root.  :srs: "shove 'em in the Riivolution folder in the apps folder and the Riivolution folder in the root"

OMG I cannot believe that I even managed to do this.  :yay: This is my ABSOLUTE first time ever doing a setup to an SD card for Riivolution and I thank you for putting up great word by word instructions on how to do it. It was extremely confusing to do at first but I'm glad I got this over with. Thanks for the guide. Now to just figure where the textures for the characters, stages, and songs go to....... :>.>:

To the best of my knolage:
Some motions like Zelda/Sheik & Bowser/Giga & Samus/ZSS ect. have to be in the common.pac file they are in. They are mixed up tho so that means that you'd proboly need the Common.pac Common2.pac Common4.pac & Common5.pac for them to work. Common3.pac I don't think has any motionect.pacs in it.
