Title: hotdogturtle's official stage thread (New update to an old stage) - 5/02/13
Post by: hotdogturtle on January 02, 2011, 02:53:19 PM
I'm relocating my stuff over here from the texture hacking forum, since most of my hacks are stages.

(http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/TestSig.php?ByUserID=93&Style=0&Font=5&Size=11&locx=10&locy=15&Red=255&Green=255&Blue=255&oR=255&oG=255&oB=255&CustomText=Click+here+to+go+to+my+BrawlVault) (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?ByUserID=93&Moderated=All)

Check the last page of this topic for constant updates so I don't have to keep updating this post.

Background swaps and retextures
These are my personal specialty, or at least my favorite type of stage hacks. They're modifications of the original stages which don't affect how they play.

Final Jungle
(http://i44.tinypic.com/14l7k92.jpg)
This is the first one I made back when background swaps were a new concept. People were only swapping the original backgrounds, but I got the idea to swap background parts that were already retextured.

Corneria in space
(http://i42.tinypic.com/hx4tup.jpg)

BattleSkiff
(http://i45.tinypic.com/9k2irl.jpg)
My most popular stage :D

Ripped Sky FD
(http://i44.tinypic.com/1z70sgn.jpg)

Dream of Mirrors
(http://i43.tinypic.com/dewxfq.jpg)

Night Eldin Temple
(http://i29.tinypic.com/2468ltu.jpg)
This was the first Temple background swap, because normally the background is part of the same model as the main stage. I got the idea to remove the background by editing the materials of the model.

Smashville Waterfall
(http://i54.tinypic.com/33l2zd2.jpg)

B75
(http://i56.tinypic.com/23uabfa.jpg)

Cave Flower (FD)
(http://i52.tinypic.com/27ytv2d.jpg)

Hazard modifications
These are stages that are edited so they behave differently than their default counterparts. Yeah, it's kinda hard to show these in pictures since there's nothing visually changed about them >_>

Frozen Pokemon Stadium 2
(http://i50.tinypic.com/hwbc02.jpg)
People used to use a code to freeze this, but that caused some issues. Editing the stage directly is simpler for users to just download and throw on their SD card without bothering with codes.

Calm Pirate Ship
(http://i52.tinypic.com/10yjoyc.jpg)
I liked the way this stage looked, but the hazards always distracted me from admiring the scenery. Here, ALL of the random events have been removed (including the non-damaging ones), so it's just the ship sailing along without interruption. The water is still there.

SSE stages
Parts of the SSE that you can play in Vs. mode.

The Cave
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2uizmag.jpg)

The Ice Cave
(http://i47.tinypic.com/auiixi.jpg)
A retextured version of the previous stage that gives it a different atmosphere. The collisions are the same so you could use it with the alternate stage loader.

Forest stage
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2e16a9f.jpg)
This stage was made waaay back in the day, right when Brawlbox first came out. People were new at replacing models, so the first version of this stage (made by somebody else) had some glitches. I attempted to fix some of them and re-released the stage myself. Later, libertyernie fixed even more of the glitches and added it the the Vault. You can find this stage on my BrawlVault and his.

Dark Subspace
(http://i50.tinypic.com/1zccmli.jpg)
I personally ported this stage back when SSE imports were new. However, like the previous stage, it had some problems. In this case, most of the background was missing (but I didn't know it at the time). Later, Mewtwo2000 fixed (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=9267) the background as well as all the glitches, but you can still download my original version (http://www.mediafire.com/?zymkm4miyjg) in case you like the black sky instead of the purple one.

Imported stages
Models taken from other games.

Peach's Castle outside
(http://i49.tinypic.com/2wly2v4.jpg)
This stage was imported from Mario Kart Wii by someone else, but he left the stage position in the default area, which created a walkoff stage. I moved the stage so you now fight on this hill overlooking the castle. There are now real death boundaries on all four sides including the bottom.

2D stages
I dislike 2D stages, but I had to make one after I got the idea to use sprites.

Snake Man's stage
(http://i44.tinypic.com/qosks1.jpg)
I checked a bunch of Mega Man stages looking for good spots that would work as SSB stages, and I came up with this. Unfortunately, this stage has a few glitches as a result of my inexperience at the time that I made it. I don't play Brawl anymore and I won't pick it up again until Project M comes out, so I don't know when I'll get around to fixing them. Sorry :(. But people keep downloading it anyway, so I guess it's still playable despite the problems.

Future ideas
Finally finish Weather Stadium 2

I've got an update here, at least somewhat.

Does anyone else here play Project M (http://projectm.smashmods.com/)? It comes with a modded Battlefield that makes the platforms more like Melee Battlefield, but keeps the ledges from Brawl Battlefield. I have updated my BattleSkiff stage with a Project M safe version.

(http://i51.tinypic.com/vnoxuo.jpg)

The link in my BrawlVault now directs you to a folder where you can choose the regular version of the stage or the Project M version.

At some point I'll try to update most of my other stages for P:M, but I wanted to get this one done first.

~~~
Oh, and I just fixed the lighting glitch on the vBrawl version. I actually didn't do anything different, so I think it was the old version of BrawlBox messing up the scenedata somehow. Here's a comparison between the old one (first) and new one (second):
(http://i45.tinypic.com/9k2irl.jpg)(http://i54.tinypic.com/2drcqpf.jpg)
You don't have to download the new version, but the link has been updated in case you want it.
I don't know if you saw this, but I have an updated version of your SSE forest stage on the vault. The main change is that the whole stage is moved way up - this was how I fixed the Ice Climbers' final smash.
Yeah, I saw that. That was one of my old stages from when people were just learning about porting stages to the Wifi waiting room. I knew it had some problems but I never got around to fixing them. So thanks for that.
Hey, guess what. I did something!
Guess what else? It's not Weather Stadium 2. Sorry.
It's a new Smashville background.
I love Smashville edits.
And I love this one.
Needless to say, it was an instant download.
Good job. :]
This was an idea that came to me on a whim, so I made it. It was surprisingly easy to build with the 75M pieces, even considering that I could only work with the smallest length of girders.
This was also my first time using vis0 animations (for Donkey Kong). I have to say, they're really fun. I'm going to try to incorporate them into some future stages if the chance arises.
I feel like I'm stalking your thread now...
But I have to say that's very creative. The fact that it doesn't desync wifi is also pretty impressive, considering you rebuilt the stage from girders.
Alright, back into the shadows I go.
Keep up the good work. :]
Better to have a stalker than a bunch of lurkers. At least this way I get feedback on my stages.
And it's positive feedback, so thanks <3
I always have tons of ideas, but there are so few stages to put them on. I don't want to make a bunch of background swaps for the same stage, but I also don't want to bother hacking stages that nobody will ever play.
Not an update, but a status report to point out that I just passed 10,000 downloads on BV :)
It feels like I've ascended to a new level.
Whoaa this turned out real nice. The lighting is what catches my attention the most and it matches perfectly with the BG. I'm just curious how exactly did you do it? Nonetheless great job.
What happened there was taking the situation that was handed to me and modifying it to my benefit. This is why I like this stage too, because it's so unique.
It started when I just imported the healing room's lighting to the stage, because usually when I do background swaps I use the lighting that came from the original background. It ended up with the stage being really bright, like on some of my other ones. This time I decided that I wanted to fix it. I remembered that there was a guide for changing lights and fogs that I had never bothered to read until now, so I did that. After some random experimentation, I came out with a lot of interesting effects, including turning the entire stage blue, but none of them darkened the stage the way I wanted it to. The whole time, that light was on the right side of the stage for whatever reason, and the left was dark. Then I remembered that I could also move the lights in addition to changing their colors, so I put that one in the exact center of the stage. If it didn't look good I was planning on moving it out of view so the whole stage was dark (like how I was envisioning from the start), but it gave that really nice effect where it looked like the flower was the light source.
This is the guide I used: http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=21475.0
Basically the only thing I did was move the source of the light (Vec1 and Vec2). But now that I know how to alter the color of the lights, I'm going to try using it in future stages to create a better atmosphere.
Hey, I don't suppose you could make another hazard edit? like get rid of the Great fox's laser in the Corneria Stage? while keeping Fox and Falco's ability to call their friends?
Post by: hotdogturtle on September 14, 2011, 12:09:38 PM
It's worth a try I guess. Corneria doesn't have MiscData20 (the thing that controls the timing and appearance of hazards on some stages like PS2), so I'd have to find some workaround.
Title: Re: hotdogturtle's stage thread | PAGING ANYBODY WHO'S DOWNLOADED STUFF OF MINE
Post by: hotdogturtle on November 15, 2011, 02:46:34 PM
Hey, this isn't related to stage hacking, but I need help.
My Barrel roll loading screen (http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?ByUserID=93&Reported=1&Moderated=All) was deleted from Mediafire, and I no longer have the original file. I don't know why; normally I have everything that I've made on my computer in the folders where I created it. But the only one I have of this is an older, non-working version. Is there anybody who downloaded this who can send it back to me so I can re-upload it? This would be a huge help. As a last resort I could attempt to remake it, but I'd rather post the original file. Hopefully one of the 350+ people who downloaded it will see this and be able to send it to me.
PROBLEM SOLVED
I realized that last year, I made a backup of my SD card at the time on my external hard drive. I forgot about it since I haven't needed to take any hacks from those folders since then. I had a working copy of my loading screen there, so I've reuploaded it.
2 versions of a Subspace background for Project M's Metal Cavern:
(http://i50.tinypic.com/30c92sy.jpg)
Funny thing is, I had my own idea to put almost this exact background on Metal Cavern myself when the demo came out. But I saw a post on Smashmods today and I found out that someone already did this last year for demo 1. It was too perfect so I had to fix it up.
Already a new submission from me...
(http://oi45.tinypic.com/fk8w3q.jpg)
As I said in the description, I made this for Brawl before Project M came out, but it was impossible to make the sides of this stage fit with the lips on Brawl's FD. Now that Melee FD has the same rounded sides, it was easy to make them fit. The only slightly distracting part is that the ceiling underneath the stage is slightly invisible. But in theory, you're probably dead anyway if you ever hit the ceiling. It's not any worse than the leaf in my Cave FD that occasionally blocked your view for a split second.
Another new FD, but this one should be my last one for a while.
(http://i49.tinypic.com/k0rccl.jpg)
As I said in the description, there aren't that many FD textures like this, so I made one. This is technically the first true texture hack that I've ever made, since I colored the whole stage myself (unless you could that one where I simply turned all the textures greyscale). I chose FD because it's a model import so its textures aren't too complex and there aren't that many of them.
I'll try to start working on different stages after this.
I noticed that the sky in my stage wasn't animated, because the SRT was missing from the SSE stage that was commonly circulating around here. I downloaded the original version from Brawl to grab the file and add it here. The download link has been updated on the vault, and anyone who's using the stage should redownload it to get the better looking one.
Ugh. I know that I said no more FDs, but people were requesting this one. And then someone tried making it but he couldn't get it to work, so he joined the requesters. I didn't want to leave all those people hanging.
Remember this old stage I made?
(http://i.imgur.com/XJUoPaA.jpg)
It was always one of my favorites, but it had one problem. Due to the design of the cave that I used as the background, there was one leaf that showed up when people were off the right side of the stage. It looked something like this:
(http://imageshack.us/a/img708/3712/al1305022045binout.jpg)
Notice Meta Knight gliding behind that leaf. Sure, I could have fixed it by shifting the background in a different way, but everything else about the stage was so perfect that I didn't want to move it. I couldn't delete the polygon or the materials because it was shared with the other leaves in the stage.
Well, guess what the new BrawlBox allows you to do?
(http://imageshack.us/a/img600/1116/al1305022106binout.jpg)
I finally got rid of that leaf that's been plaguing my stage for so long. I always knew that it was possible, but I lacked the tools to do it myself, and I didn't want to have to ask someone else for help. I went ahead and deleted the entire vine that used to be there too, just to ensure that your view of the stage will be completely unobstructed no matter what the camera does.
As usual, let me know if you encounter any problems with it, although there really shouldn't be any.
