Hey Everyone.
This is the Cape Mario Thread - Hopefully soon to be the Vontower Hack Thread

Alright, so here's Cape Mario Version 2. I updated with pictures and what-not. As always, feed back is not just appreciated, but encouraged.

Down taunt takes out cape in a puff of smoke

the peace from when you beat a level in mario world. if you are facing left he swings around to look at you first.

This is neat. I took the idea from Kirby's up throw. I animated it manually though.

The throw distance is equal to the normal up throw without the cape.



New dash attack (for cape)
The dive attack without the cape kinda looked like he was trying to fly, so i helped him out. Now he flies, does a series of attacks that ends with a higher knockback attack. You want the opponent in front of you when you use this attack for full effect.

New Up Smash (for cape)
Headbutt never made much sense to me... anyways, heres the new up smash.
He jumps up and kicks with both feet. Hits twice, first 2 then 14. Both increase when charged. totalling to ~22

it will hit enemies in front of/behind mario


New F Air (for cape)
The punch is replaced with a sideways spin attack, ending in a downward kick. Occasionally sends opponents downward. The very end of the attack is a meteor smash. basically you can chose between a meteor smash or the spin attack, which does more damage.

New N Air (for cape)
A basic spin attack. It usually hits twice, has similar knockback as the regular kick. I still need to tweak it a bit before i release it.

He spins in the opposite direction and spins alot faster then the second jump mentioned above. There shouldn't be any confusion.


Fixed Running animation for cape
SDo0m InCaRnAti0n noted that the running animation needed a bit of love. and I agreed. So i did a bit more work on it and i hope it looks better to everyone. I didn't to anything drastic. Just made his arms and hat bob with the run, and made each step look more like... a step. its subtle.

I've thought for a while now that there should be a cape mario and so far no ones jumped on it. So i thought I would start my own mod of Mario.

I replaced the flood with the cape, then hexed it so it attaches to mario's neck instead of his waist. I also Hexed out the code that makes the fluud disappear after a while.

[UPDATE  1.14.2011]    
      - when Cape is out, i gave mario a custom 3rd attack for his Normal Attack. Now he will spin a few times, real quick before he kicks to do about 6 or 7 more damage. (I like how this came out alot)
      - When Cape is out, mario now has a custom run animation. He will only run like this when the cape is out. Hestands up straight and holds his arms out to his sides, just like in SMW. To my knowledge, this is the first conditional running animation hack, giving a character 2 running animations.


Changelist

First off, I brought back the Mario Tornado. When the match starts, mario will just be mario. when you use this attack, the cape appears. This does less damage but more knockback then the Luigi Tornado.

Run animation
We are all familiar with this run animation:

I set it up so you see the normal run animation without the cape out, but when you take the cape out:

Its the Super Mario World Run. I ran into a big glitch with this, but i ironed it out.


Neutral Attack Combo
If you haven't figured it out, I'm trying to make the cape suplimentary to marios standard moveset. A good mario player should be able to go back and forth with little / no issue. The upgrades the cape give you are better, but don't take away from the playstyle. People shouldn't be penalized when they try to do something but... oops, the capes not out. That said, i changed the 3rd hit in mario's AAA combo with the cape. The first 2 punches have less knockback (with cape) so you don't push them too far away for:

A spin attack! It's real quick (less then a second long) and can tally up to about 7 damage. Just enough knockback to keep them there. but don't worry. You end it with:

A swift kick in the Groin. This has identical knock back and damage to the normal kick.
All things considered, having the cape out results in about 15-16% damage with the whole combo. (vs the normal 9)


Up Special
Without the cape, mario will do his typical recovery, but if you have the cape, dont you think mario should fly?
He spins and launches into the air.

then he pulls his cape out, just like Super Mario World

then lands and slides on the ground

This attack, without any input, moves mario about the length of Final Destination. This is far, I know. Thats why after using it, you will lose the cape until you use the mario tornado again. If you pull back after take-off, mario will land right next to where he took off.
Its a bit difficult to use because if your facing the wrong way... you can't grab the ledge. I'm gunna figure some way to make him turn around mid-flight.


Side Special
This attack didn't change all that much. the only thing is, if you have your cape out, mario will put it away after the attack. If the cape isn't out, there will be a short delay before using the attack. cuz he's gotta take it out first.

N Special
I like this one. It never made sense to me that mario could only fire 1 shot at a time and it kinda rolled to a stop. So, i changed the bounce velocity and through a bit of PSA variable fun, I managed to make him shoot up to 3 before the lag kicks in.

D Air
The Down Air is the ground pound. no surprise there, this attack should have been in here in the first place.

if you are high enough (just higher then marios double jump height) mario will pound people into the ground and do a bit more damage.

see him rocketing down? once you see that then you know its gunna stick em in the ground.

if you have the cape, mario will do the dive bomb attack from SMW
when he lands, the stage shakes from the impact!

Like the ground pound, if you manage to pull this attack off from a higher height, it gets more powerful.
mario erupts into fire and hits the ground in a huge explosion!

this does significantly more damage and has a high knockback. but its not easy to pull off.

Dash Attack
this idea was borrowed from the mario 64 and the 3d mario hacks.
mario dives forward on his belly like he does in mario 64, then you can tap a ro quickly jump back up onto your feet. thanks you haloedhero for permission.

Misc stuff:
If mario has the cape out and he's hit by a single attack that does more then 10% damage (typically only specials and smashes) then you will hear the shrink noise when mario gets hit by a bad guy and he will lose his cape.
If his damage is higher then 100% then any attack that does more the 3% damage will make him lose his cape. (this ended up being every attack)

Actually, you can make other characters glide. Razanak7 and KingJigglypuff both made Link glide, and KingJiggs also made Falco glide in his Scyther PSA.

You'd have to ask them how though.

the mario tornado is kinda like that attack already. i was thinking of giving him a looping attack to replace his 3rd N attack when he has the cape. maybe he could spin like falco does, only he hits with the cape.

i can look into this. I had an idea that would give him extra "jumps"
like you could do with cape mario in SMW

Great work vontower, I can see that you've been spending quite a bit of time studying up on PSA and that you've spent a good amount of time on this.  I can't wait til release and I also can't wait to see what kind of stuff you have instore for the future ;)

This is probably my favorite Mario PSA I've seen in a while, I love the fact that you made him look EXACTLY like he does in SMW when he flies with the cape. As for suggestions, it seems perfect to me, I don't really see where it could be changed,

I got an idea, could you make his up throw when in Mario World he kicks an item straight up? So far, World is the only game where he could do that, and its another "ability" you could add. Also i dont suppose you could change his dash animation to where he holds his arms out like he does when running in World. And lastly you could change one of his taunts (or maybe win animation) to the Peace sign he does after passing the goal in World.

one of the problems i'm having is that marios arms and legs keep going through the cape in some animations. that might be a good way to fix it.

i figured out how to give mario a running animation that only gets used when the cape is out. It was actually real easy.
I also gave him a custom 3rd attack for his N Combo. True to form, he will only use this attack when he has his cape out. I updated the first post but ill have pictures soon.

Yea, I guess when it's done i can Release a version that he doesn't lose his cape.
I wanted to make it so that if you have the cape, mario becomes a bit more powerful, but its something that you have to ... uhh... maintain. Otherwise you almost never have to lose the cape.

True but still any special which is the best part after words you put the cape up.... :/ Acutally either he doesn't lose after specials ( which is good for Brawl - users like  me) And loses after damage.. Or loses after special but not by damage...

well, i'm having a bit of trouble with his final smash. I didn't change anything about it, but for some reason it wont work in the air. he just kinda goes through the motions. Then i can't even generate another smash ball. (in training). Then when i quit out of training, it freezes (not every time)
i have a theory that im gunna try out then ill prolly release v1. There still more i want to do but its solid enough to release after this fix.

I wanna do something with luigi. Raccoon is more possible then Cape because luigi only has 1 article and the cape is generated as an article. (over fludd).

Also, fludd is special in that its attached to mario. most articles are items or something separate.

if i made something similar for luigi, it might have to be out all the time. I've always wanted tanooki luigi for some reason...

Awesome hack! I loved it!
But I found a bug... With the cape, when you run and at the right time when mario changes his run animation to SMW one, if you use U-Smash, the screen will turn black and you can't see a thing. The only way to get rid of it is resetting the game. I didn't tested it on my wii and on another versions of Dolphin.

I can't reproduce that error. I've gotten it before, by tapping down while using the new run...
ill put in a fix tomorrow, even though i can't reproduce it, i think i can fix it

I can do that, the ears might be tough to have appear but... ill give it a shot

EDIT: It wouldn't really make sense for the racoon tail to disappear when you use the side special...

awesome tested in game.... I like it but seems alittle weak compared to my roster..... (the minus people) The thing i have too say is... The second part of the down ariel is strong enough for how hard it is to get it...

yea, i tried to make it balanced for brawl+

I made the down aerial thing like that so it would be kinda like.. "You knocked me into the air? well screw you"

Heres a tip: if you get the guy stuck in the ground with the ground pound, use the mario tornado immediately. They can't run from the smaller hits, and the last hit (which is kinda hard to hit with normally) has real decent knockback

thanks alot.  I'm working on a patch so there can be raccon mario with the same moveset. but the best part will be that it lets you use both cape mario and racoon mario. I'm having a bit of trouble with it but i have some ideas. If this works, itll open a new door in article hacking. (a small door)

I'm already doing some things for Cape Mario V2. It'll also be compatible with (hopefully) a Raccoon Mario model i'm toying around with.
I'm gunna be using a bit of a new method for the V2 so I MIGHT be able to have the SpecialS change color along with the standard cape.
Should be out in ... a week?

I honestly haven't given it much thought. it would most likely be a cape with the tail texture on it... I'm still toying around with if what I want to do is even possible. I might end up going in a slightly different direction

@vontower- I use Brawl+ too but when I use your fitmario.pac Mario's attack such as side B are slower and vbrawl-ish. Is there any way you could make it so it's the same as brawl+ but with your cape mario mod too?

the side B is slower if you don't already have the cape out. It should be normal speed when the cape is out. I used the fitmario from brawl+ so i dunno.
i can take out the delay in his side B in V2 if you want

I think you should take out the delay, otherwise everything great, moveset is good, I like the A down. It would be great if you could make mario's speed and everything as close as you can to  how it is in brawl+. For example when pressing A up and such, it seems a little slower idk.. I really love this mod but I can't play brawl without Brawl+ lol

And one more thing, it freezes for me when I use the special, as soon as I hit B, it's ok if I have the smashball, do you think this has something to do on my end?

mine dont freezes only if i use my own hack Fireballs to hammers on Mario if i use final smash (sometimes not all times) do you use it on cape mario PSA? if you do just get the Cape Mario PSA´s FitMariomontion.pac back and delete Fitkirbymario00.pac

I have no idea why I didn't test this before.  I downloaded it and I was so busy working on Cloud that I didn't actually put this in my ISO.  Now that I found some time to put it in I'm not regretting it at all because this is FANTASTIC!

Honestly I love it!  And to do this for your first PSA is amazing!  Here's my overall feedback:

SDo0m's Feedback for Cape Mario

Firstly, I'd like to say that the entire concept is great.  It's more of an upgrade to Mario than a complete moveset change which I think is great (since I like playing as Mario personally).  I think there could be more upgrades to some of the basic moves.

My only complaint with the run is that it almost looks like he's sliding along the ground rather than stepping.  It's a bit hard to describe but I think the steps need a bit more bounce in the animation (this is just me being nitpicky as an animator myself).

AAA combo - Normal one left the same, Cape one is new and it's great.  16% is pretty good considering that it only really connects fully right next to the opponent, so it's nicely balanced here.  And a nice animation too.

F Tilt - Same both ways.  Personally I never really liked this move but that's just me. I think it should be changed for something similar to say Sonic's F Tilt.  Also (just a suggestion) but do you think you could sort of make it string like a combo by pressing A multiple times?  A bit like how Metaknight's F Tilt functions.

D Tilt - Same both ways again.  This move was always bad but instead of a completely new move, this one should just be made better (see Balanced Brawl Mario).

U Tilt - Absolutely fine staying the same

Dash Attack - I'm happy that you used haloedhero's animation here because it came out fantastic.  Not only does this move look the part, but it's also great for setting up a combo.  All in all I love this move!

Smashes are all fine.  They work better as killing moves now because they are easier to set up into.

Aerials are fine too.  I love both of his new D Airs and how they are stronger when done from a certain height.  Great job with these.  The animations for both look smooth.  Two more moves that I love!

I appreciate all the input definately. I've actually already started on V2 and ill take what you said into consideration. A lot of the moves weren't changed at all so theres still alot of room for improvement.

I agree about the running animation. It was kinda a last minute idea. Ill try and clean it up for you.

Well, I don't use your hammer mod, I just put the fitmario.pac, fitmariomotionetc.pac and the fitmario00.pac/pcs
So that I can use cape mario with mario's original slot. I have textures on all of mario's slots, but the cape one is only on the original slot.

I'll check out some things that might be causing problems with mario. But other than that I'm only using the codes that came with Brawl+. I even disabled some like custom stages and stage freeze.

Well it looks like Cape Mario V2 is gunna be my next upload.
I have other projects in production but Cape Mario didn't need too much more. I haven't been able to test a theory i was playing with just yet. So the raccoon patch will have to wait a bit. (Unless i get off my ass and do it).
I've been toying with the idea in my head, and I should definately be able to have 1 slot be cape mario, and another be raccoon mario.

I fixed the final smash crash problem. I don't how, I just kept reinstalling
the psa until it worked. I guess I didn't properly put the files in last time.

maybe sometime ill make a V3 and add it. I'm done with this hack for now.


EDIT: once the bone editor is out, i will persue making a raccon mario that will work with this moveset. So that is Reserved. It will be made so that both cape mario and raccoon mario will work at the same time.

I'm using a custom Final. maybe thats it? I just used it over and over again about 10 times.
the only thing i can think of is that I'm using a custom final for mario

mine freezing no matter cape is out or not:( but you can try to make a new final smash and see it works i gave you afew ideas from my last post in this thread :D

unfortunately yes...

but not following the steps wont necessarily effect gameplay
the only difference is, the cape will look like the fludd and it will be coming out of mario's neck

yes i have tested on both in V1 so i am sure V2 works too i have only tested v2 on US

putting a white cape over the yellow is easy just replace texture for the cape

sry for 2x post in a row but i have raccon Mario (no fludd or cape) just removed Fludd by animation and put any animation on fludd´s size on 0
i will upload it soon so you can use a raccon mario without fludd or cape on his neck/back
this download is just until vontower is done for his raccon mario for the PSA

No i was asking on how to add a cape to a character i already have.

it's Zelda's Model over Diddy. i've already replaced the gun with a sword, and now i want to place a cape over his Rocket Pack, and getting it to show up every animation. but, i don't know what bone it refers to. i fixed it with the sword, but i forget how to do it...

hey vontower i know how to fix the final smash now i just fixed it :) but i can´t upload the fitmario.pac i have edited afew other things then final smash like take cape off/on on side-B and cape dont go off at up-B

here is how i did
deleted anything in eventlist: Other/GFX/SFX on Animation Final/Finalair in PSA
and Copyed anything from eventlist: main in psa from Final to Finalair and removed Goto:(offset to Final) in Finalair in PSA
so Finalair dont got that Goto:(offset to Final) but same codes in PSA as Final

not sure it work 100% but it worked for me all the testes i tried with final smash but no SFXs on final smash i had to detele it in PSA or it will crash sometimes but atleast not all time like if i dont deleled Other in eventlist in psa for final/finalair

a other fix i have made for your cape mario vontower now is side-B oneslot side-B use the cape over fludd and not the cape in fitmontion.pac but i had to replace the animation in FitmarioXX.pac/pcs Capewait2 so sometimes while you do it a attack or just stay still the cape do it animation for side-B but rarely it looks like this:

but side-B looks better now:

also trying :) so you have abit less work to do
edit: got oneslot capes to work :) but have to add one more animation inside fitmarioXX.pac/.pcs and the cape is at mario´s feet then do it side-B so have to fix animation too

i needing help on Final smash i want it to be like Sonic where he flying around and make dmg to other players but not sure how to do it (i can self make animation but not psa for that)i can send you the Fitmario.pac/FitMarioMontion.pac(not 100% done yet with new Side-B animation but this works better then old one for the cape) mario spin around just one time like in Super Mario World also that side-B animation will look good for raccon mario so it fit with both too :) you can use the same animations in my psa on FitmarioXX.pac/.pcs as on this one

also side-Smash is new a hammer attack the hammer is over the cape in fitmontion.pac (will make two versions one with hammer other with old side-Smash)used the Animations swing4/swing4hold/swing4start but i will make new animation for the hammer attack later too

this is why i am making my PSA :) but not 100% same but still got cape attacks
i am making afew version of my PSA True Mario a PSA with 0 fire attacks but hammer attacks :) and one of the versions is Cape Mario with hammer

I discovered a bug: on the ladder, mario doesn't have an animation, it returns to its neutral position. Only by staying there, not by going up or down.

Keep working, if you have something to do, do it, but, please, when you finish it keep working on Cape Mario, i love it :).

then use SMBZ mario moveset
SMBZ mario moveset got all cape moves here + hammer attacks +a working FS  btw dont bump old threads
beside the maker of this moveset stopped with Brawl hacking

btw i think you had to rebuild the Fitmario.pac for cape mario and only hex his cape to be on neck bone
i think you have hexed Fireball and FS fire by a mistake and thats why Fireball spawn in middel of mario and FS sometime crashing
