Title: How to make High Quality Custom CSPs, CSS icons, CSS names, and Recolors!
Post by: nanobuds on September 19, 2011, 07:23:05 PM
A lot of you know me for my awesome CSPs. I have moved on to importing, but I don't want to leave Portrait making without helping others.

I hope you all enjoy :)

Supplies Needed:
Basic knowledge of BrawlBox http://www.mediafire.com/?slrig3kevcpux (http://www.mediafire.com/?slrig3kevcpux)
Basic Knowledge of Gimp http://www.filehippo.com/download_the_gimp/ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_the_gimp/)
CSS Templates:

^^Name Template is black^^

CSPs
New Brawl Box:
NOTE: the sound is off on this one
[Brawl Hacks] Making Character Selection Portraits (CSPs) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANErSqbM7mI#ws)

Old Brawl Box:
I am going to make Trunks over Ike by BeyondYou CSS stuff in this tutorial
1.) Open model in BrawlBox, and open all tabs and FitMotionEtc.pac for that character
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/1499/22220083.jpg)
2.)Model look funny? Uncheck polygons until the area is fixed (usually the face or eyes of a character)
3.) Create a Custom pose using the FitMotionEtc.pac or make your own pose  :)
4.) Change the background color to green
(http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6710/13950214.jpg)
5.) On the keyboard, press CTRL+PRT SCR
6.) Open Gimp, and press CTRL+V
7.) Your BrawlBox screen should appear.
8.) Then make sure you crop the picture (first, put the proportions 128x160, check the box that says "Fixed", then resize the crop box)
9.) Now time to get rid of the green. Use the Select By Color Tool.
10.) Click on the green areas, then right-click, Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel.
11.) Press "Delete" on the keyboard, then unselect your object.
12.) Now its time to fix those eyes. Ike (as well as a few other characters) has messed up eye whites. So i needed to edit that using the brush and blend tool.
13.) Export the eye iris (found in BrawlBox, under textures)
14.) in Gimp, go to File>Open as Layers>Select the eye iris
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9909/28327590.jpg)
15.) Re-size and edit the eye to make it fit the eye socket appropiately
16.) After fixing the eye, click Layer>Merge Layer
(http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5504/28806194.jpg)
17.) Repeat steps 12-16 for other eye if needed
18.) Now re-size the image. Make sure it is 128x160 px
(http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/4703/14361595.jpg)
19.) Click Image>Fit Canvas to Layers
(http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/528/66514763.jpg)
20.) Save as a .png and enjoy  :kdance:

CSS Icons
1.) Open template you want in Gimp
(http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/4438/17230101.jpg)
2.) Open picture or CSP you prefer to use (File>Open as Layers)
3.) Draw a white outline around the picture. The thickness is up to you, i prefer to make the brush size 0.15.
4.) File>Save as a .png. If a box pops up, check the box "Merge Visible Layers" then click "Export"
5.) Enjoy  :kdance:

CSS Names
1.) Open Template
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2152/23847111.jpg)
2.) Using Font tool, type name of character
3.) Change to preferred font (I use LeviBrush) and change color white. Resize if necessary.
4.) Save and Enjoy  :kdance:

CSP Recolors
1.) Open CSP you wish to edit
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/2834/82736497.jpg)
2.) Select the brush tool, and change the mode to "Color"
3.) Color the regions you wish to recolor
(http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7310/34584338.jpg)
NOTE: If you select black or white, it will turn colors grey. To fix this, you must play around with the brush mode "Lighten Only" or "Darken Only" and change the opacity of the brush. I still have yet to find a better way to recolor things black or white using Gimp.
4.) Enjoy  :kdance:
(http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/2528/trunksl.png)(http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8139/redwa.png)(http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1344/greenn.png)(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/3382/yellowj.png)(http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/9251/blackgl.png)

I've always wondered the proper way to do this.  Well, I was slowly figuring it out myself but this tutorial is awesome.  And it's now even better now that we have Brawlbox 0.64 which has proper good lighting.

Also be aware that parts of your CSP will be cut off by the game interface.
I always keep that in mind because it bugs me to lose their faces under the ready bar.

Of course, even with the new brawlbox that has lighting, you should still play around with the dodge and burn tools on an overlapping layer to give the CSP more depth.

Actually, honestly, there are some better ways of doing this. Perhaps I should make my own CSP tutorial, even though I have little experience in the subject. But I've made my fair share of poses.

Its just the eye placement... that takes practice to get right.

also, try to brighten it up a bit... use the dodge tool a bit

About the CSS names, the font Nintendo uses for the default one is Mercury Display Bold (http://f.cl.ly/items/3c1O3L0Z0n1J1d1T3002/Screen%20Shot%202012-03-24%20at%2011.32.13%20PM.png)

Hmm... So I just fix the eyes & move them a bit then I brighten it a bit? How do I fix the "eyes popping out at you" problem? They look a bit too big but if I make them smaller they are to tiny. Weird. What exactly does the Dodge Tool do?

Hey, I'm trying to do the CSS name, and I was wondering how I can get the Levibrush font onto my Gimp program. It didn't come with that font installed. I googled it, but I'm not really sure which download link to use, and I'm not sure how to install the font into Gimp.

Not sure if is the right place, but for some reason, even after replacing CSP files in sc_selcharacter_en.pac, (under char_bust_tex_lz77), they don't show up in the menu, much less on the battlefield.  The characters' portraits I'm attempting to replace are located under Misc_Data[12] and Misc_Data[43], which are Peach and Wolf respectively.

The .png files in question are all 120x160 pixels with transparency layers using Photoshop, and yet, despite following all instructions, none of them ever show up in Brawl.  Is this due to my using Dolphin as opposed to a real Wii console?  Does it I need to delete the matching character costume's old palettes?  (What I mean is, Peach's default outfit is named "MenSelchrFaceB.121", so if I swap that with a new CSP, do I need to delete the old palette)?
