Title: how stages work?
Post by: UltimaNylocke on October 16, 2014, 09:46:58 PM
I know I've been asking a lot of questions a bit lately, but that is a bit because I'm new.
A question I'm having is like, I see stage hacks for certain stages, but can I use any hack stage with any regular stage? I really don't like Rainbow Cruise as a stage... so if I download a map in the green hill zone section, can I just switch the name of the file to whatever Rainbow Cruise's file name is or does a map that replaces Rainbow Cruise HAVE TO BE in the Rainbow Cruise category?

With a proper module (.rel file), you can use any stage in any slot.

This will help you: http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=49748.msg1008940#msg1008940 (http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=49748.msg1008940#msg1008940)

What if a stage doesn't have a .rel file? I found a Peach's Castle map and it only has a "STGCUSTOM1D.pac". What do I do then? What does Custom1d even mean?

STGCUSTOM is for the stage expansion. http://www.lakora.us/rel/ (http://www.lakora.us/rel/)

Stage Expansion? ......What is that...? Also, I still don't get what lakora.us/rel has to do with it.... like I see STGCUSTOM in the "to replace" area but I don't have a .rel for STGCUSTOM just a pac.... am confused...

I gave you that link to help you convert modules easier.
Also, Stage Expansion allows you to add more stages without replacing any.

Ya, but I don't have a .rel file, I just have the pac file for STGCUSTOM. How do I add it to the game without replacing anything or how can I add it replacing something? This is where I'm confused.

With the website, you won't need a module, if I remember correctly. The site provides them.

If you don't want to replace a stage and use that stage, you'll need to use the stage expansion code. Otherwise, you can use a module to replace a stage that already exists or replace the stage it's based on without a module. You just need to know the base stage of the stage you downloaded (eg, use a Battlefield module with a Battlefield-based stage).

Well the thing says "Base .Rel" and "To Replace". I'm just getting really confused, it doesn't feel clear to me. Like this is what I downloaded http://prntscr.com/4z2o48 (http://prntscr.com/4z2o48) and I have no clue what to do with it. Also, I have no idea what a stage expansion code is, and even if I did, I wouldn't know if it works with Project M cuz that's what I mainly use (srsly, the gameplay is a lot better).

Another note, I downloaded Lakora's SSSEditor and I have no idea how to use it with Project M, I can't find a GCT in the pf folder. And I still dunno what to do with my Peach's Castle stage...

at "base.rel" choose the rel of the stage where your downloaded stage goes over (in your example the green hill zone rel.
then at "to replace" choose the stage you want to replace (in your example rainbow cruise). then you will get your rel to download.

Well my Peach's Castle doesn't have a .rel, it just has STGCUSTOM1D.pac o.O

you can open your stage with brawlbox, then you can see what stage is the base for your downloaded stage :)

I opened it in Brawl Box, it says STGPEACHCASTLE64, but it has a thing saying it can work over many stages like Final Destination or Green Hill. Does this mean I can just use it over any stage?

Nope. It's customly built and will definitely work over some, but not all.

Get the stage, rename it as STGFINAL.PAC and it will work okay over FD without a .rel.

Rel files (or modules) are files used alongside the stage PAC files to port a stage. It works over its original stage without a custom rel, but it will need a custom rel in order to use it over other stages that aren't the one it's originally built for.

That's what the Lakora website will help you in - by choosing the original stage it's meant for (in this case, Final Destination) and the one you want to replace (let's say, Green Hill Zone), you can download a rel that will enable you to simply rename your stage for Green Hill Zone and it will work. As long as the rel you download is placed on pf/module, that is.

So what I do is, go to Lakora, put Base .REL as Final Destination and To Replace (w/e), then put the .rel in the folder, and put the STGCUSTOM1D.pac in the stages folder and rename it to match (w/e)? Got it. Now, I read the mentioning of a stage expansion code so naturally I googled it and found a dl link on Smashboards, and I have no idea what any of it means. (I'm new to like everything sry :P) so http://prntscr.com/51srm0 (http://prntscr.com/51srm0) I got all this and I don't know what to do with it nor do I know if I can use the stage expansion code for 36 stages without having 36 stages (like if I want to use the 36 stage code and only put like 20 stages).

Exactly. That's how you port stages.

The Stage Expansion adds a number of extra stages, that you can add without replacing any.
You should read as much as you can about it before trying it out, as you could do something wrong.

As far as I remember, all you need to do is add the proper code to the GCT you're using and use an edited sc_selmap for the expansion. If it's Project M, it'll be a little more troublesome. After all, I'm not sure if the Stage Expansion Project M GCT is up to date with the current Project M version.

I suggest you make another Help thread asking for tips (or maybe just asking for the needed files, I'm sure someone has them set already).
