PROJECT PORKY MINCH

INTRODUCTION

Welp, here it is. My first serious hack... Project Porky Minch! I've been thinking about doing something besides personal texture or animation hacks for a while now, so what better character for a PSA to start with than the arguably-third-most-important Mother character over Ninten? ...right?

The most important thing to get out of the way: Porky is going over Lucas. "WHY ARE YOU REPLACING TEH ONLY OTHER MOTHER CHARACTUR" blah blah blah... Well, it's simply because he's one of the characters I know the best and I think that will really make things easier for me when editing in PSA.

Last but not least, Porky's moveset is going to be a recreation of his appearance in the fantastic SSB fan-game, Super Smash Bros. Crusade (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDNNNuOU97s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDNNNuOU97s) [skip to the time frames in the description for the fights with Porky]). I played this game recently and absolutely loved how Porky was portrayed. So yeah. That's about it, really!

I'll have no respect in this project unless he has a "SPANKETY, SPANKETY, SPANKETY!" taunt.

Yes, that will obviously be included XD

Just an update, BTW: I tried loading him into Brawl and it froze, as I expected. However, I think that because of his completely different bones, the game doesn't know how to attach him to the Mr. Saturn tea table thingy in Lucas' entry animation, so the game just freezes. I'll be working on making a new entry animation, but I need to think of what I could use that's from EarthBound (I'm only sticking to Porky's canon in EarthBound because this PSA is for young Porky). How about he flies in inside Monotoli's helicopter? It could be used for a recovery too.

I like what you're doing with this! (This is Zapdos Productions!) I bet you know more about Brawl PSAs than me.
Nice work and good luck  :af2:

Thanks for your support! I just need a helicopter model right now, though. Then I can make an entry animation and a up B. I need to find a modeler, because I can't make a model.

Why not take the helicopter from the Fourside stage?

Here's a dropbox link to Porky's Helicopter, I'm sure you can find out how to use it:

Ah, yes! Thank you so very much! I appreciate it. Then he'll actually work in-game.

EDIT: Posted this before I went to the link, and turns out it's an OBJ file, which isn't compatible with Brawl. Now I need to find a way to convert it to MDL0 file type...

EDIT X2: Made a really big update to the OP. Go re-read all of it!

You can convert the .OBJ to .DAE (.DAE is an alternative to MDL0) by using a program called "FBX Converter". You can convert the .OBJ to .DAE in the program which allows you to use it in Brawl Box, the only problem i got from it was that I did not know how to assign bones for the model, but that's probably because I'm a beginner. So, maybe FBX Converter can help your situation. I hope this can help.  :kdance:

This is a great idea! I saw Zapdos Productions video on youtube out of curiosity if anyone had made porky yet. Unfortunately, I am very new to Brawl Hacking so I would not be very useful. However, I am very excited to see the final product!!

Thanks! I've been losing a lot of my motivation these past few days, but having people who actually want to see our Pig King in Brawl is the only thing that can keep me going. I really appreciate it!

What all do you know related to Brawl hacking? Are you interested in making them, or do you just like to use them?

Mostly just using them. I really would like to learn more about it. The most I've done was mess around with some characters PSAs and right now I'm trying to learn how to create a final smash so that I can put it on characters without final smashes like the Alloys and Giga Bowser. However I haven't quite gotten to trying yet

Title: Re: The great Pig King himself! PROJECT PORKY MINCH (PSA)
Post by: PigmaskColonel on June 18, 2015, 03:57:05 PM
Yeah, from what I know, you can't use final smashes for Giga and Wario-Man, as they ARE the final smash... However, the alloys may be able to. I'm not entirely sure, but it seems like that should be possible.

So, yeah. If you ever want to help, just shoot me a PM.

Ahh okay thanks for the tip, I know alloys can from seeing a hacker do so on YouTube.  And yeah if I can manage to teach myself learning how to create hacks and move sets I'll definitely try!

IMPORTANT UPDATE!

I have a big announcement to make. I've been thinking about the PSA, and how I've wanted to see Porky in Smash. Well, after a lot of thinking, I've decided to make a big change to the PSA: I'm going to make this have Porky in his M3 incarnation, in which he is old. Of course, that also means he's going to have an entirely different moveset, because he'll be in his bed mech from M3. I have downsized the original mech model from his Brawl boss fight, but kept him at a normal size, akin to the mech size in M3. I have also removed the new elements of the mech's Brawl design by removing a polygon, which does unfortunately mean that some parts of the mech's "face" have been removed (the "mustache" and those weird things that hang down, specifically).

I'm sure that some of you may be dissapointed that Porky is now in his mech, however, I believe that this will be for the better. When making the PSA, I've recently felt that Porky not being in his mech just... didn't feel right. Porky is known for being cowardly, and having him doing hand-to-hand combat seemed out of character and a little boring, TBH. I decided to play around with his brawl model and try to make it look like how it was in M3. And, well... Here I am.

The most important aspect of this update is this, though: Porky's moveset is going to be a recreation of his appearance in the fantastic SSB fan-game, Super Smash Bros. Crusade (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDNNNuOU97s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDNNNuOU97s)). I played this game recently and absolutely loved how Porky was portrayed. So, yeah. That's about it, really!

Here's Porky's new "render" and a size comparison with Lucas.

I'll update the OP soon to match this update. I'll take any criticisms or concerns into consideration.

This moveset seems great! After all, Porky/Pokey IS one of the most important characters in the MOTHER/EarthBound mythos, so why he hasn't gotten a moveset yet is beyond me!

Good luck!

What's wrong with his moveset in Crusade? I think it represents him perfectly.

Also, Nebulon, thank you for you're support. Being my first PSA, don't expect anything amazing. However, when I make the final version at some point (probably a few years from now), I hope for it to be perfect. Like, Marioking64ds Waluigi PSA kind of perfect.

Actually, speaking of versions, I've been wondering something. For v.01, would you guys rather have the PSA out sooner, but very incomplete and buggy? Or would you rather have a version that'll take longer to make, but of much higher quality? I'm personally leaning towards the former, because I have school and other responsibilities that keep me from having the time to test the PSA. In other words, it would make it easier because I could get some feedback on bugs or anything that should be changed as I'm making it. What do you guys think?

Title: Re: The great Pig King himself! PROJECT PORKY MINCH (PSA)
Post by: Nebulon on June 27, 2015, 12:19:31 AM
Release him in early versions for feedback and bug hunting. As a pack builder, I would never have been able to find all of the little bugs and glitches in the build I'm working on, were it not for my multiple releases. It's much easier.

That, or have a round table of individuals that you send the latest version to for testing and feedback.

Releasing incomplete versions more frequently definitely seems like the better option here.
If you need someone to help with CSPs and recoloring, let me know.

Yes, I agree. I think I'll release him once I have, at the very least, all of his tilts, jab, and dash attack done... Or something. I'm not really sure just how much time it will since this is my first PSA. However, I think I'll take this route.

I can do any CSS things myself, however, I''m not too familiar with how to do good recolors. You could help me out with that. I'll PM you a download link to a FitLucas00.pac file. You can rip the textures and edit them however you like.

I see. Are you using the animations for the boss as a jumping point, or are those animations incompatible?

Well, Porky is a coward and he is too afraid to fight, maybe it's better for him to be in his Mother 3 Incarnation, this will be one of the best mods I've ever seen, good luck dude!

I was worried you would be disappointed in my decision, but I'm very happy to see you're on board. Thank you very much!

I haven't tried yet. I'm planning on making all the animations myself, however it kind of depends... Some of the animations may be too difficult (animating the mech is hell with just how many different bones there are), as it's much different than animating you're average character with much less bones to work with.

So I really should probably try it, however I'm not sure it'll work because of how different the model is now.

I would really reccomend using the game animations if possible, and trying to make the skeleton compatible... It's ao ambitious and awesome I'd hate to see you burnt out animating everything.

Well, I've tried it and it seems to work fine... However, unfortunately, all the animations don't look right due to the different size of the mech's model. Porky's legs are also inside the mech in all the animations.

Also, there's an issue I want to address: You know how whenever a character turns around, they aren't mirrored? Well, I just realized that this will ruin Porky's animations, because you'll only be able to see the back of him when facing the left (he faces the screen constantly when facing the right in almost all animations)... It'll look rather awkward and you won't be able to see Porky himself. So, is it somehow possible to make animations mirrored? I feel that this could really ruin the PSA...

Yeah completely agree, maybe it's best for him to be in his Mother 3 incarnation. And I'd love to test out Porky and give feedback! I'll probably test him out on my BrawlEx. He's going to be over Lucas right?

To answer you're questions, yes, he's going over Lucas, and no, I'm still making the the essential animations before I even start messing with PSA. In other words, I'll definitely let you test him eventually, just not until I actually get him working in the game without any beeps of death.

EDIT: Updated OP with new BrawlBox screens.

Hmm, have you been able to find anything on mirrored animations? Its funny because the boss Porky can walk both directions and not face the opposite direction.

Maybe if its small enough, he could face the opponent instead of face the screen, but that would kinda render the boss's animations useless.

Edit: I was just thinking, do the turn around animations technically reverse the direction of the character? Perhaps if it doesn't turn the character around, they will continue to walk left but still appear to walk right, bit won't matter since Porky's walking animation pretty much looks the same either way. This is just a thought, it probably won't work... -_-

Title: Re: The great Pig King himself! PROJECT PORKY MINCH (PSA)
Post by: Nebulon on July 17, 2015, 08:44:28 AM
You could make the model face bith ways by having two models. If it's moving one way, the other will be transparent. Vice versa. Though I wouldn't know how to code that...

Or remove all reverse directions in the coding... Unless that's hardcoded somewhere..

Title: Re: The great Pig King himself! PROJECT PORKY MINCH (PSA)
Post by: SemiPsycho on July 17, 2015, 08:27:32 PM
Yeah I was thinking that you could possibly use model switchers? Maybe its possible to have a mirrored model and include a model switcher in the turning animations that will load the mirrored model once you turn the other direction, thus rerotating it the position Porky needs to be in immediately. Maybe you can replace Lucas's bat in order to do so?

I was also thinking that at a last resort, the model could be modified to be symmetrical on both sides, with an immediate switch to the other side in the turning animation, so from the front it appears as if nothing happened. But obviously if you pause and rotate the camera you'll be able to see that there are two Porkies...

I think one thing that would be good as a taunt, would be him doing a Pigmask Salute, while making a snort sound, like a pig.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to contact Pigmask Colonel and I haven't had a computer available to work on the project. I might be able to work on it in about 5 days though.

Hello everyone...

I know it's been a while and that you probably all think this mod is dead, but I still intend on finishing this. I'm not sure if Semi is coming back, but whatever. I just have a really bad habit of getting all excited about a project, starting it, and losing my motivation to finish it.

I have another project I've been working on, actually. I'm composing a soundtrack for a Banjo-Kazooie fangame. So I'll look for some time soon to work on Porky again.

sorry for the bump huehue

Lol I'm still here... using my phone. I'm fixing my laptop currently, and after its fixed, I will probably try many times to rig porky to Lucas with extra bones.
