It's really not confusing Ventus was Xehanort apprentice think of it as force unleashed with Vader nd Starkiller. Ventus was a failed apprentice so Xehanort said F it he's useless I'm just gonna take the darkness out of his heart nd create a dark being and name him Vanitas. Vanitas only looks like sora becuz Ventus nd Sora hearts are connected.
