Hi - I originally made a thread for this, but when I saw this thread I just decided to remove it and post this here. It's a really good snapshot converter that works in WINE really well. There's one I've already put in a wrapper that once contained a BrawlBox that I got here:
Oh shoot, didn't realize that program's Window's only. I'm a Mac too, and already had enough trauma getting BrawlBox to work, so I guess I'll take Zgg up on his offer. Thanks anyways though, since now I know.
Oh, I see - sorry about that. I somehow just assumed I was the only Mac user in the surrounding 500 miles of cyberspace. If you have Crossover, that's what I use to run it with, it uses WINE and works pretty well with convert. I literally had no issues setting it up, all you need to do is run it. In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, I'm going to try to set up convert so it runs in WINE without Crossover. That would be very convenient, and it should be easy enough... I hope.
EDIT: What version of BrawlBox do you have running? I couldn't find any workable ones after, I think, 0.64...
EDIT 2: OMG it worked. All I did was copy the convert.exe into the wineskin that my BrawlBox used and made it the default app when it opens, and it works. I'm uploading it to DropBox now, I'll post a link when it's done. Yay for all Mac users! I may post it in a new thread in case any others could use it.
EDIT 3: Alright, file sharers aren't playing nice with it, so I had to zip it. It's uploading much better now. Should be done uploading within half an hour.
EDIT 4: FINALLY DONE! Phew, okay. Here's the Brawl Snapshot Converter, fully ready to use on Mac. I even made it a quick icon. I use Snow Leopard, but it should be fine on others as well. Just unzip it, and when you open it, give it a sec to start up. It's pretty self-explanatory, and if you've got BrawlBox working already, it shouldn't be a problem.
Oh, that sounds way easier than I thought lol. Guess I can probably be able to post the screenshots by tonight then. I'm testing my final-ish version right now. Also, I doubt the PMBR would use any method that messes with save data. They're really picky about anything buggy. You're probably safe without a backup.
Yeah - the only reason I have a problem with it sometimes is because I'm on a Mac, and most brawl-related things don't run natively on it, so I end up using WINE and it's just a mess. But for Windows users? Easy as pie.
I don't doubt PMBR wants things as stable as possible, but adding a whole new character is bound to be incredibly hard on the save file. Since Brawl saves automatically, having 36 unlocked characters when there are only 35 would make loading the game without the hacks pretty buggy, I would think, especially since there wouldn't actually be a Roy on the disc to load...
Looks like PMBR has a new model for their Roy so Mango Roy will have to be updated. Also, dibs on Mewtwo when they reveal him. Btw, almost done with Ivy and Squirtle. I'm not sure exactly how to get screenshots from Brawl though, so someone else will probably have to do that for me.
I'll work on that new Roy ASAP - I'm pretty excited over having him added instead of just replacing, though I'll definitely have to backup my save data first. Adding a new character from scratch is bound to mess with it.
In any case, he's not in the download, yet (I checked), so we'll have to wait for the new demo to actually make textures for him, it seems.
To get screenshots from Brawl, just put them on your SD card and convert all the files in the al folder to jpgs. There are plenty of ways to do it - bin2jpg is the most popular one, I think, but I use one that's just called 'convert'. I... uh, forgot how I found it but it works really well. I put it in my dropbox, so you can download it if you want:
Has PMBR found a way to add more characters in P:M? Like the Stage Expension code?
There actually already was an incomplete way to do it (made by the same guy who gave us cBliss), but it was flawed in quite a few ways. It shared resources with other fighters and used the MarioD slot... there was even a kit to help you set it up. It seems PMBR has either refined and completed it, or created a new method.
Just wanted to say that Ness and Lucas look way too similar. Shoes or stripes merely being swapped colors isn't noticeable enough in-game. One of them needs to be changed a bit so that they don't look nearly 100% the same.
And for an alternate Ness, using his Fuel shirt (solid white with red sleeves) is better than just varying colors of shoes, pants, etc.
Yeah, I was actually planning on remaking those two after the green was added to the palette, since it gives a lot more possible variety.
Using the Fuel shirt seemed like a good idea, so I went ahead and tried it out. I think it turned out much better than the original one, I think, though ironically it looks better without the green I added to it so I took it out.
Let me know if there're any tweaks you think would improve it!
What's wrong with that? Also before I cover up those blue spots on zelda's banner thing check her out.
I also want to add alts and use other people textures as base.
She's looking pretty good! I like the way she's turning out.
There shouldn't be a problem making alts with others' textures as long as you give them credit for the original. Any particular ones you were thinking of?
adding the green color on the color palette was an awesome idea !
I agree - the green makes an excellent highlight when used properly. I may go back and edit my other textures from before the green was added to include it. I probably won't get rid of my current versions in case someone likes them more, but I definitely think they could be improved with this.
I finally got around to working on Pit - I'll post him sometime tonight, after I get home and get some in-game snapshots. In the meantime - any feedback? Suggestions?
I'm thinking about making the ring and leaves around his head green, as well. What do you think?
No matter how much I tried, the water only got a tint, nothing else :/
Really cool looking! Even though the water's just kind of tinted, the lighting still looks pretty amazing!
Anyway, a lot came up for me last week and I'm in school again now so I may not get around to Pit after all if my instructors slam me with too much work too quickly. I'll get around to it if I feel like it when I have the time, but don't hold off on him if someone else gets the urge to make him.
I actually use Photoshop CS5 - it was required for a lot of my classes, so I've gotten pretty used to it. It has a feature called adjustment layers that lets you modify the layers below it with sliders for hue, saturation, lightness, brightness, contrast and a lot more - it's incredibly handy for recoloring things, and it lets you mask off areas you don't want affected. Combine that with its layer blending modes and effects, and you can get pretty much any effect you want for things like this if you play around with it long enough.
I should write a tutorial for this with pictures and everything...
That's not a bad idea - I know a lot of people don't have Photoshop because it's pricey (I wouldn't have come close to affording it without the education discount) but it could be useful to anyone who does happen to have it...
I do have trouble creating a vanilla/beige color hues, how does one make vanilla hues? And for river I don't think that be possible unless I mess with the lights but not an expert on scenedata but I can give it a shot I guess.
Also for pit may I suggest peach color and doing the shield/sword/rings?
Thanks for the opinions guys!
By vanilla and beige, I meant the colors that were in the OP. You can really just get them off of there, though you usually have to really brighten whatever you put them on to make them look right, or they turn out really dark.
Yeah, peach seems like a good color for him, and I'll definitely change the shield/sword/rings for him, although something came up so I'll probably have to wait till tomorrow to start on him. Any input is appreciated!
I'd have to agree with ZeroGG's analysis, and I'd also like to add that there are some plants near the bottom (some flowers, and I think I see some fruits,) that could be colored orange or vanilla, as well as some background pieces in the second pic that seem to be made of stone. Also, the river should be given an orange tint as well I think, though I'm not sure how much trouble water is to work with or if the lighting would do it.
Or, maybe I'm completely wrong, I dunno, I've never done stages before
Are finished textures going to be posted in the OP? Right now it's easy to find textures, but when the project gets bigger this'll be a must.
Agreed - finished textures should be posted in the OP for simplicity's sake.
On that note, I woke up today and wanted to do some Mango Ice Climbers... and then I noticed they were already done exactly the way I did them, just before I made this post. Seriously, they were almost completely the exact same colors.
