I want to make a few suggestions on your texture there:
- I don't think I explained myself well enough on the lines thing: I meant having them wrap arond the mound in the middle of his torso that is basically his head, having two more of them wrap diagonally around toward the bottom of the torso and into the fan, and having vertical ones along the middle of the sides of the torso.
- The other thing is the lines are too subtle. Look at Mega Man's texture and you'll notice many of the dark lines on his body have lighter colored edges on them.
- Those scratches you currently have I would recommend removing. That stuff never really looks good unless the texture in question isn't mirrored.
- The metal texture is too subtle. You need something grainier and less subtle to overlay, something with more contrast that you can shrink down and repeat. I recommend looking at Mega Man's texture again for a significant example. As for the overall shading, look at Ragnell's blade or ROB himself.
- Looking at his texture again, he could stand to be a darker shade of blue if you're willing to do that.
So, as a general critique to people making models with speculars or planned speculars: I want to direct you all to Captain Falcon for something I think will be of benefit to your models.
Notice the subtle tactile texture on there? With the shine? This is something a lot of models with speculars that I've seen don't utilize: it's a grayscale texture that Falcon's model uses, and there's a similar texture on Aafyre's Poliwrath vertex from a long while ago.
I really think making a similar kind of texture would enhance quite a few models that utilize speculars.
The reason for the change of colors would be to change the overall visual feel of the forum, not so much the people on it. That change would have to come from people themselves, but changing the look and feel of it can help.
Colors affect people psychologically. As it stands the forum has an overwhelming amount of black and grey in it with a very small spattering of color in places. Changing the overall palette can do good things for the forum in the long run.
In addition to giving a bit of a higher contrast to the Shadows, I recommend taking some photos and playing around with them in Photoshop to make the specular shine. That's kinda what I did with Metal Sonic a while back.
The muscle definition was something I considered doing, but honestly, I don't know how to pull it off on the model itself, with all its wonky mapping. I had to do some major UV editing to get things looking even remotely correct. As for his leg texture, the texture itself is the same size as the original Mar02 (256 x 256). That's why it doesn't look quite as good as the arms in the render.
Muscle definition isn't that hard to do. Just look at Ike in the new Smash or anyone with muscles.
I'm gonna be blunt and agree with Majora here: Shovel Knight looks unfinished.
He needs proper textures with shading and highlights, and have his issues fixed. He could also do with a better specular texture, like one make from scratch in black and white with a darker overall base texture to supplement it.
What I like the most about your project is it does what Project M should've done in regards to Fox and Falco, IMO: Differentiating Fox and Falco even more than they were in Melee.
I actually like the idea of changing the forum's theme, updating it could renew interest. If I had to choose a color scheme, I'd go for one that emulates the interface, menus, and css of either Brawl or Smash 4. Also adding and changing a few smileys would be nice, like updating the stock pics to the Sm4sh ones.
That sounds like a baby product oriented color scheme. Or like one of those ugly 90's shirts. But this is a brawl hacking site, not a yoga or tai chi seminar. :I
Ouch, fair enough.
Basing the new theme off of Smash 4 or Brawls menus seems like a cool idea to me, yeah.
Will would like to insert the cat motif somewhere into it though.
