Do you need both .pac and .pcs files?

I normally have both of of them every time I use a hack, but I was thinking, to save space in my SD Card, can I have just the .pac/.pcs files?

if your doing solo (like event, SSE, classic) , you need a pac, and if you're doing group, you need the .pcs. if it is a transforming character (Zelda/sheik, samus/zsamus, pokemon trainer)
