does scanning your SD card delete anything? or is any trouble at all?

everytime i plug in my sd card my computer asks me if i want to do a scan and that its recommended.

i always skip it but i wanted to ask you guys if i should be scanning it and if i do...does it delete anything off of my sd card at all?

or is it 100% safe?
