Homebrew channel shouldn't brick your wii at all....  I'm pretty sure updating using nintendo's official updates deletes the homebrew channel.  More than likely you can't get it back for a while after that too....  why do you need to update anyways?

What Miniova said isn't entirely true. If you update the Homebrew channel before updating the Wii the channel stays. Gecko OS still works only Riivolution will NOT work. The rest will.
