It freezes because the filesize of the Common5 or sc_selmap goes over the limit...

You guys should removed the two Motion.pacs in the common5.pac so it would give you more space.

Really now? I'm surprised, it should have worked. Have you tried indexing the SSP's to a smaller size? Right now, the SelmapPrevBase (the bigger one pic) has 26.6kb. That's pretty big, maybe index it to 150 colors or 100, I can do this for you here try this it's 16.kb now I reduced it to 50 colors. It may look a bit sloppy now because of the colors, but ingame you won't noticed a difference (Unless you play the game upclose in front of the screen)

Awesome! Well, I used GIMP and I changed the image channel to index, it'll ask you if you want to convert with 255 colors i just lower the color count to 50 and that's it I saved the image after that.
Only change the colors to those portraits that will need it. Look at file size first, if's it's like at least 20kb it may freeze your game. If not, good. If it does, make the file size go as small as it can and there you go, it should work.

In photoshop you can index it too... Only try to search "mode" in the "Image/s" options and you can find the "Indexed Color" Check the Spoiler:
