My wii's lens is not reading games atm. Should I shell out for a lens cleaning kit, or is there a different way to clean it?

You could always switch to using USB Loader applications.  WiiFlow is one application that you can refer to, but you do need a working disc drive if you want to install ISOs onto any USB devices.

Anyway, a disc drive that isn't working could be a sign that it's about to die.  Unfortunately, Wiis that have Homebrew data can not be repaired by Nintendo; in other words, if you use ANY Homebrew, you're screwed.

Is online the only place to get one?
