I know this is a dumb question, but how long does a request thread need to be up before a post on it is considered necroposting? I have some request threads that have hardly been looked at and I was wondering if there was an exception for request threads or at least some way of keeping it alive. I have some requests I would really like fulfilled, so I've been patient and have been playing the waiting game but I did not know a thing called necroposting existed until I went to reply on someones topic then a necropost warning came up saying that a post hasn't been in the topic for three weeks and it was considered a necropost. I heard of the term but thought it was a year or two long before it was considered a necropost. So is there a way to keep the request threads from being dead, or is there an exception for requests?

Please someone answer. I don't want those threads to die. I check on them daily... I know very little of necroposting. Can someone please inform me by answering the question in the first post?

A post a considered a Necropost if a thread in the Hacking section has been inactive for at least 3 weeks.

    Though there are some exceptions.
    -Your own threads.
    -Help/Request threads.
    -Off-Topic section.

But even though there are exceptions, users are encouraged to not post in those threads if they have been inactive for say, at least 2 months (unless it's important). You won't get in trouble, but it sometimes/often tends to annoy/irritate users when someone new bumps a 4+ month old thread.

Okay, thank you! I was confused because I remember seeing that in the rules but wasn't sure because when I went to post I got a necropost warning but it was on a request thread. As for users being encouraged not to post in 2 month old threads, what about if I'm still watching that old request thread? Does that mean it's dead and I need to make a new one? I don't want to end up spamming...

It's okay if it's your thread. It's just encouraged not to if it's someone else's thread.

so I'll have a chance of getting a reply and my thread not becoming dead if I keep checking up on it like I've been doing?

If you make a thread, wait a few hours before posting again if no one has replied in your thread yet.

I've been waiting for a week. I'm not impatient or anything, it's just I don't want the thread to die when it's hardly been looked at... So how long should I wait? I can wait even a year or two. Is there a way to keep it from dying? I'm hoping if I wait a reeeeeally long time enough pepole will see it and I'll eventually get a reply. But even with the exception of request threads, users are encouraged not to post in 2 month old threads. So how do I know with these variables if my thread is officially dead and no one is ever going to reply and it's time to make a new one?

Wait about 1-3 hours. Or try once a day if you like.

If you get little to no replies, then it appears people are either too busy or aren't very interested.

But Help and Request threads usually tend to get ignored.

And the 2 month encouragement was merely an example. In reality, it would be more like a 6+ month old thread.

I see. So after 6 months and no reply, my thread would probably be dead and that's the sign it's time to make a new one?

The rules used to have a strict 3-week cutoff for necroposting, regardless of the thread type and what was being posted.

The current iteration of the rules, however, is far more lenient.

In your case, request threads are totally exempt from the necroposting rule.
