Gibberish when I try to replace certain files

Whenever I try to and replace, say, a character's CSS Portrait name, or the title of a stage, or more recently, one of the lines of text on the title screen, when I replace the current image, the preview that appears upon ok-ing the replacement is nothing but black and gray static that juuuuust barely resembles what I put in.

I've had this happen with a few names I got off this site.

What format was the picture originally? Did you import it correctly?

Everything should be imported as a .png and if it's CSS text, it has to be in I4 format as well.

I saved it as a .png and it definitely imported as an I4.
I just tried it again to make sure and it said there was an error that I'd have to either ignore (which erases the texture) or quit BrawlBox...
