A tip: before you edit your common5, make a copy of it and simply re-paste it in the system folder (or elsewhere.) Do this every time you edit it, so that you'll always have a back up of something that previously worked, and you won't be pissed at yourself for not making it before.
As for your current problem, it could be because you're closing the window too fast after it's finished saving. I know it sounds weird, but my common5 would always corrupt if I didn't give it a few seconds after it finished. Not exactly sure why this is but you could give it a shot.
Confusing, but worth learning. It's easily the fastest way to recolour.
To each their own, however. You can make recolours whichever way you please. I figured I'd just share how I make them, because I've gotten great results using this method.
I'm sure you've noticed the empty slots in the Sel_Character.pac right? Well even if there isn't say a Giga Bowser CSP or any Alloy CSPs or any icons then we could still make the icons & put them in. How do you think we were gonna try it (I'm saying we for anyone who's trying this with me)? I'd proboly can just replace the blank file or just add the file if needed with only using the CSS & CSS Organizer & images. Then I'd only need the codes we all use for Giga & company.
Let me try to explain this to you.
Those "empty slots" you mentioned are exactly that; empty. They are leftovers from the development of the game. You can't just replace these empty slots and expect them to magically replace Giga Bowser & company. This is because their CSS icons are shared with the character they're based on (Warioman - Wario, etc.) A code to give GB&C their own unique CSS icons is required.
If you replace Bowser's CSS icon, you also replace Giga Bowser's. If you replace Captain Falcon's, you replace Red Alloy's. You get me?
Here's an even faster way to do quick yet effective recolors.
1. Use Colour Wand to select what you want to edit. Once selected, press Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V. This should paste your selection in a new layer. If it pastes it in the same layer, just create a new layer and paste it into there. Move into place if required.
2. Desaturate the new layer completely. This should leave you with a simple gray recolour. Brighten/darken if required (pretty much dark to bright and vice versa will require this)
3. Create a new layer and use the Fill bucket with whatever colour you want. Right click the new layer and click "create clipping mask", and then change the layer type (check Chaos_Knight's spoiler) to "overlay". This layer should be place directly on top of the separated texture.
And there you go. Takes maybe 30 minutes for a full recolour. This method is advantageous because you can save it with everything in the texture separated into layers, making for super-quick recolouring, literally less then a minute depending on the complexity of the your texture.
I normally use Photoshop for recolours so some of this may be wrong for GIMP users. I don't see why GIMP wouldn't have any of the features I mentioned, though.
So do you guys have palettes for these textures, or do you just kinda click around the colour-map in PS? I want to make some of these but I'd like to do it right the first time.
Yeah the lighting is terrible right no, haha. It was a quick test to see how far my current methods go against the default renders... There's clearly quite a bit missing.
Are you using the older DS22 Melee Fox or the new ones by Apples?
The new skins by Apples. As long as the models are same I can do both packs, if requested I suppose. I also plan to do all of Apples' standalone MFox skins. Wish he would have just uploaded a full pack, haha
You remind me of another CSP maker named Dr. Funny thing his CSPs are almost as smooth and polished as yours.
I shall be watching this thread...
Interesting? How so?
I actually just checked out this Dr.'s thread. Turns out I use some of his CSPs... I always wondered who actually made the FE:Awakening Marth CSPs haha. He's got some good technique with his poses though, for sure.
Another preview, black fox because why not. Probs gonna release soon. You can't see the white outline in-game, fyi.
