On multiple songs I've used, and in the one I just created (Using brawlbox for mac) I've had two problems.

1.It's way too quiet

2. At a random point during the song, there's a loud crackling/ripping sound, and then the music goes away OR it turns into a completely different song! And not the original song, but custom songs on completely different stages! It usually comes back eventually, but what am I (And other people when they make .brstm's) doing wrong to cause this, and what can I do to fix it?

try defragmenting your SD card (my computer right click properties defragment)
    this often happens with .brstms

You may want to also check the Sample Rate of your BRSTM.  If it's greater than 32000 Hz (the Sample Rate that all the Brawl BRSTMs use), then the BRSTM will likely behave erratically in-game.

How would I go about lowering it?

And I still would like an answer to the volume question.

Use BrawlBox to export it as a wav, change the sample rate with Audacity/Goldwave, then create a new brstm (BrawlBox will tell you what the loop point on the original is) using the fixed wav.

Follow the steps I just gave you, but instead of changing the sample rate, increase the volume.

Note that if you replace a Melee song (any brstm whose filename starts with "W"), the song will be much quieter in the game.
