Damage Numbers?

Dows anyone know how to make an outline on custom damage numbers? Like is there only alowed to be pure white and pure black in he file or can there b other shades in between. I tried to make a dark outline by making the outline of the nuber a very dark shade of grey but not black and now my game freezes going to the stage select screen. If you want a copy of my common 5 and info pacs i can dish em out.
