As STASH, ASH, and CUPASH currently refuse to detect ntcompress(for over two months now), I decided to use smashbox in order to change textures instead.
The problem? Holy crap, the common5.pac is huge. Is there a list of IDs and such stating where the character textures can be found in the first place? Right now, I'm just traying to change the CSPs. I'll get to the battle portraits later.
And yes, this topic makes me sound nubbish.

Ah, Smaaaaaaashbox. k, well, first off, open the common5. Go to sel_character_en, then go into char_bust_tex_lz77 (They have ARC symbols). And... That's it. You have Type[##] folders. The CSPs are in there. I will also note, if you want the CSPs to show on the Results Screen, you'll need to edit the MenSelcharB###.brres files as well. EDIT: Use this. It's helpful for this actually. http://kittycorp.freecp.net/index.php?topic=25.0The first two digits, are what the digits are for the folders you need to edit. For example, the first two digits for Marth are 16 in that thread. So, his portraits are in Type[16]. Have fun.

Thanks man! Seriously helps me out with this. One thing though. I will also note, if you want the CSPs to show on the Results Screen, you'll need to edit the MenSelcharB###.brres files as well. Aren't those in the char_bust_tex_lz77 as well? Or do you mean I have to edit the brres file after putting the character images back in? Also, so that I don't do the same stupid thing I did with strap loaders, all images are in tga format, right?

Editing the portrait in the common5 will only display the CSPs on the character select screen, and not on the Results Screen. You need to edit those MenSelcharB###.brres files for them to show on the Results Screen. You can use .PNG format to replace as well. Only .PNG, or .TGA though. Also, since Smashbox can't handle magenta as a transparent color, you will have to erase the backgrounds if you haven't done so already.

Well, smashbox does magenta automatically, but I didn't know that. Thanks for the tidbit.
So with smashbox, I won' t be able to edit the results screen CSPs?

No, you can edit them. You need the .brres files that have them though.

Alright. So far, I've had no success properly replacing anything. tHe game freezes right before it has to load the CSS screen.
I've been using the magic wand to delete the magenta backgrounds(getting checkered backgrounds) and I've been saving the images as pngs. I've extracted the in game CSPs, edited the images I wanted over those, and then saved. What am I doing wrong?
Edit: Possible success afterall. I managed to replace kirby's gray CSP with a picture of Zero(KDL3). Ignoring the fact that kirby's name blocks Zero's eye, the only problem I have is photoshop would only let me paste zero over kirby in grayscale.
With Zero, indexed the original pic before replacing it myself. The other pictures I tried to replace didn't need to have me do this, since they were all indexed already.

Uhm... Remove CSPs for transforming characters. Ex. Pokemon Trainer, Zelda/Sheik, Samus/ZeroSuitSamus. That causes the crashing.

Aside from the grayscale kirby pic, I was using an unedited common5.pac. But I uploaded it anyway. However I was told that file size changes weren't a big deal with the common5.pac.

Bump. Though the visual quality of the CSPs I've made(some from in game screenshots) is pretty discouraging.
Also, can battle portraits be SD loaded?
