Even if you have no indexed images... it may be a good idea to index your images (then set them back to RGB).

    Image > Mode > Indexed (Some #)
    Image > Mode > RGB

This will reduce the color count (and therefore the filesize).

Also... "reducing complexity" may help. A single color image will be a smaller file size than a checkerboard pattern, and a checkboard pattern will be smaller than random "static".

    ----

STASH works best if you edit one image at a time, repacking after each. Many stages contain at least 1 "huge" image that you can apply either of the above steps to and give yourself some "leeway" with modifying the rest.

Um, is it okay if I bump this? >_> You locked a recent topic asking about it, so...

I'm getting this error, but I don't think any amount of filesize reduction is going to fix it, because... it always occurs. Like, even if I don't even touch anything. I run extract and then immediately run create, say no to each texture, and it tells me it's too big.

    Dot, dot, dot, question mark?

    Nope. All unedited.

I've tried Norfair, Brinstar, Frigate Orpheon, and Pirate Ship so far, all with the same result.

Eh... I don't know about the others but Pirate Ship did give me trouble. I think that whatever method used to re-compress isn't quite as goon as the official one.

Actually, if your stage has a TShadow1 texture (Sort of looks like a silhouette of Mario) somewhere in the textures, you can just index it to two colors and convert it back to RGB color. As far as I can tell, this texture isn't used in the actual stage, so you should be good.

Er, I'm running Paint.NET, so I kind of can't index. I tried making it entirely black, but that didn't work.

EDIT: OH WAIT. Just tried saving it again, and now it worked. Never mind. Cheesy
