I did some CSPs and battle portraits, added them with brawlbox like I normally do, but anytime I load the game up and select Brawl or Training, I get the Beep Of Death. I thought it might've been a corrupt common5.pac so I deleted it and loaded a fresh one with the new CSPs/battle portraits and still the same thing....so im thinking maybe I have too many or it might be a problem with one of my battle portraits or something?

EDIT: I looked around and seen the post with the info saying any more than 135 portraits may lead to freezing, and/or biggest problems occur with PKMN Trainer and his pokemon, Sheik, Zelda, and Zero Suit. I've had textures on all of these characters and it worked fine...so im thinking that I might be "exceeding" the limit. Is there a way around this? or do I have to delete some CSPs and battle portraits?

I think it's the file size limit, not specific to how much CSP's you put in.

Well its not the file size limit, because the basic common5.pac is like 11.6mb...the one I had that was messing up was like 11.9 or so...then I trimmed it down...now its like 11.4 and its still freezing. Im almost certain its one/some of my CSPs because when I got to the character select screen...I left the cursor alone and everything was fine, but as soon as I hovered over like Charizard then the Beep Of Death reared its ugly noise...now, if it IS a CSP, then what kind of problem could a CSP possibly give me?

If you're using sc_selcharacter.pac, that file can't use more than 3.79 MB (3,975,244 bytes).

Also, ALL portrait texture parts are in CI8 format, and use RGB5A3 palettes.  Make sure that every portrait that you've replaced uses those texture formats.

Im not using the sc_selcharacter.pac, im using the common5.pac, putting it into BrawlBox, and injecting my portraits in that way. When I make my portraits in Photoshop I save them as .PNG files and it has always worked fine that way when I put them into the common5.pac in BrawlBox...like I said im thinking one or some of them may be in the wrong format when I saved them or something..I dunno...

Well do keep in mind that if you can't get common5.pac to work, sc_selcharacter.pac is an alternate file that you can use to store your custom portraits.  Of course, it's stored in a different directory, which is...

I see...so would I have to use SSBarc or whatever its called or can I take the sc_selcharacter.pac file, put it into BrawlBox and inject the CSPs just like I did with common5?

EDIT: Nevermind, its exactly the same. Im gonna try this out and see how it fares

You basically do the exact same actions as with common5.pac.  No need for SSBarc.  Just make sure that the file is compressed when you save it.

If you don't know how to compress or decompress archives with BrawlBox, look at the image below.

Ugh...its still freezing up...it just started doing this when I added CSPs for Toon Link, Snake, Sonic, and Zero Suit. Whats weird is they all already HAD CSPs on them, I just replaced them with better ones. Even with me messing with the file size limitations its STILL freezing. I even checked my CSPs to see if there were any file type/size discrepancies but everything checks out...I have no idea what to do now...by the way is the common5.pac supposed to be compressed too? or just the sc_selcharacter_en?

The file, common5.pac, isn't compressed, but it does contain compressed archives.

Anyway, when using sc_selcharacter.pac, only certain archives need to be compressed.  Take a close look at the list below for the full details.

Gawd....its STILL freezing as soon as I click Brawl. Can I just upload the common5 im using here and see if one of you guys can diagnose the problem? Oh and I tried using the sc_selcharacter_en method, but after I was done, the file size "exceeded" the limit, and when I put it into my game it froze too. Also, I downloaded a fresh common5.pac and its base size was 11.6mbs (11,919 kbs)....after I put in my CSPs the file size stayed virtually the same except for small kb increase, 11.6mbs (11,953 kbs)...and yes...freezing still occurs. Can someone PLEASE help me out cuz this is getting to be irritating...

High quality images use more memory than low quality images.  Try reducing the number of colors that your portraits use.  That'll help in reducing the amount of memory that sc_selcharacter.pac uses.

Remember, the file, sc_selcharacter.pac, has to use less than 3.79 MB in order to work correctly.
