1  Super Smash Bros. Brawl Hacking / Portraits, Menus, (etc...) / Transparent portrites on: April 10, 2015, 09:48:13 PM
Okay, so here's what's going on: I have two Wiis. One of them reads discs, one of them does not. The one that reads discs I have an SD card for. On that SD card I use Riivolution. Sometime last year I configured one of my replacement files to take away the solid background behind portrites.

I am trying to do the same thing on Wiiscrubber with my other wii because it now needs to use USBloader. The problem is, I have scrubbed my Brawl ISO with every file on my SD card that my other wii uses. All of my file changes applied fine EXCEPT for the portrite background.

To show what I mean:

Here is what it looks like on my USBloader:

Vs. here is what it looks like on my Riivolution:

In the top image the characters have a gray or light red background behind their portrites and in the bottom one they do not.

I know for a fact this has nothing to do with the transparency settings in the .pngs I used for those characters individual portrites so please do not suggest that!

I configured my Riivolution wii a year ago and cannot remember for the life of me how I got rid of the portrite backgrounds. If anyone knows where this is done or how to do it on Wiiscrubber any help would be appreciated.
2  Help & Tutorials / Help / Re: Not your usual CSS problem - flickering? Icons crashing? on: April 05, 2014, 07:05:03 PM
Well, after 2 months of effort and trying everything I could possibly think of, I found a fix: adding 3% noise in Photoshop to all of my CSPs and grid icons. 0.1% and 0.3% noise still did not add enough colours, and the pictures were being compressed too small. Weird.
3  Help & Tutorials / Help / Not your usual CSS problem - flickering? Icons crashing? on: March 15, 2014, 10:58:41 AM
By "not your usual CSS problem", I mean that this is a really complicated problem that I couldn't fix by reading this forum's archives. Although all help is appreciated, please read the whole post before suggesting things like changing image dimensions, indexing my colours, deleting fitmotion, using a fresh common5, etc because I have tried all of these :p

(X-posted to Smashboards and reddit)

I have been working on a custom CSS that uses small-palette, 2d sprite imagery for the CSPs, icons, and character names.

The problem:

Despite all the images being the correct format and size, as well as common5.pac being a small enough filesize, the CSS still crashes when certain images are used in conjunction.

Background info:

I am using the latest build of Riivolution. I have tried Gecko with sc_selcharacter, the problem is present in both systems.

ALL of my images have been indexed to 256 colours or less in Photoshop CS6 64-bit. ALL of my images are, to the best of my knowledge, the correct dimensions and are saved as PNG.

Generally, the way I go about building the CSS is to replace all the CSPs, then replace all the icons(in MiscData[70]), then replace all the CSP names, then replace all the character marks (in MiscData[30]). I do them in order from Mario - Sonic. The crash occurs after adding all the CSPs, and then adding grid icons for Mario up to Squirtle and Ivysaur.

I have tried compiling the CSS in BrawlBox 0.71 and BrawlBox 0.63d. I retrieved these programs independently and do not have any additional tools for them.

Raw files:

Previous fix/crash investigation attempts:

The CSS works fine if I have added the grid icons for Squirtle, or Ivysaur, but not both - including both will crash it. common5.pac including ivysaur, but not squirtle - does not crash wii, but will crash if my Squirtle icon from my ZIP file is added.

The CSS works with Squirtle and Ivysaur, where Squirtle has been replaced with the Dark Flaming Blue squirtle icon from ASF1nk's CSS. I don't have a link to the common5.pac in question at the moment, but here is a link to the ASF1nk's Squirtle icon that worked with the previously linked common5. Note that ASF1nk's exported icon is a larger filesize than my raw icon.

Loading a blank common5.pac from the ISO, and replacing ONLY the Squirtle and Ivysaur icons with my custom ones (and making no other changes to the file), will load just fine. Here is the common5.pac for this.

I tried porting all my images into ASF1nk's Dark Flaming Blue CSS (which I know works on my wii). It did not work. Here is a link.

DiddyKong of kc-mm has been working with me in trying to find a fix. He tried changing the blue background of the previous CSS to CMPR format, and changing the encoding of the Random CSPs to CMPR format as well. This gets the CSS to load without crashing (common5 for this is here), however DO NOT TEST THIS ON A WII U, IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR GAMEPAD SCREEN, test it on a normal wii on a CRT ONLY - it looks like this:
the many ways of breaking the game

Weird, huh? He ran this without my codes, but I ran it too and it did the same thing.

Other mods on my Wii:

The only other hacks I have are music mods. I'm trying to make a 2-d themed menu for a tournament-legal mod set. I added the music after discovering this crash, and they do not seem to affect the CSS in any way.

Here is a direct copy-paste from the txt file containing all my codes. (NOTE: Any line without a * beside it is disabled. As in, the File Patch Code is in here as a leftover from Gecko, but is turned off.)

Other things I've tried that did not make a difference:

  • Removing the big huge fit files for Pokemon Trainer from common5.
  • Removing the icon names (since I changed the Y bone to hide them anyway)
  • De-compressing my Squirtle icon to change its file size
  • Using "recommend", and not using "recommend", when adding images

Basically I am assuming that filesize is not the issue. Especially since using such small images already decreases the size by a lot.

This has us both stumped. Any help would be appreciated, because this is a huge mystery that no amount of google searching seems to be able to help with. This is not a usual CSS issue, and I would really appreciate any insight on anything that might get us on the right track!

Thanks in advance Smiley
4  Help & Tutorials / Help / CSS is crashing wii, out of ideas. on: February 17, 2014, 12:32:56 AM
As the title says, I've made a new CSS that is crashing my wii.
  • All of my images (yes, all of them, I have triple checked this) are 128 x 160 px and were PNG files when I added them
  • I have tried loading with Riivolution 1.06 and Gecko 1.9.3.1 (with correct naming conventions), both give me this problem
  • I have tried loading the CSS as both sc_selcharacter_en.pac and common5_en.pac, does not make a difference either way
  • My common5_en compression is "none" and my sc_selcharacter_en compression is "LZ77"
  • I made this CSS in BrawlBox v0.67
  • Crash happens as soon as I try to get to the character select screen. Removing the css from my sd card prevents it from crashing.

5  Help & Tutorials / Help / Editing stage chrMark, FrontStname, and Mark... lots of questions on: July 15, 2011, 10:30:35 PM
Sorry for making 2 threads in such a short time, but this is unrelated to the problem I was having earlier. I'd like to know how to edit stage chrMark, FrontStname, and Mark files. I'm going to contain all my questions about these here to keep myself from making more threads.

Firstly: For chrMark, is there a way that lets me switch what chrMark loads for any specific stage stage?
For example, the levels Frigate Orpheon and Brinstar (Melee) both make use of the screw ball image:
However, I changed Frigate Orpheon into the Space Colony ARK, and I changed Brinstar to Central Highway from Megaman X.
I would like for Frigate Orpheon to have this symbol: But, I do not want Brinstar to have this symbol, so simply editing the screw ball image in sc_selmap would not be ideal. Is there a code that would let me accomplish what I am trying to do?

Secondly: What would the image specifications (image format, MIP levels, colours, filesize) be if I wanted to create a different chrMark for stages (such as Brinstar as Central Highway, where none of Brawl's current chrMark files would be ideal)?

Thirdly: I am wondering the same things about Mark files, like this:
I would like to know how to apply these to specific stages rather than just editing the ones that are already there, as well as what image specifications I would need if I were to create a new one. Smiley

Fourthly: I would also like to know how to edit the images that go over said Mark files (in terms of where they are stored and what image specifications there would be, if any), because I do not see them anywhere in sc_selmap.pac.

And finally: I would also like to know, what are the image specifications for FrontStname files, such as ? I understand that each stage has a unique file and I would just need to replace it in the appropriate .pac files, but what are the specifications I need to prevent it from crashing my wii (image format, MIP levels, colours, filesize)?

I know this is probably tl;dr but I didn't find what I needed by searching for "SSS" in the forums. Thanks in advance for your time. Smiley
6  Help & Tutorials / Help / Re: Problem with stage portraits... on: July 15, 2011, 09:18:47 PM
I have only been using common5.pac, and have only been replacing the Battlefield portrait with the new one. Is there something else I need to do as well, or another file I need to edit?

alternatively, is there a newer guide? Smiley

edit: I downloaded a custom sc_selmap.pac and that seems to have fixed it, but using the default sc_selmap.pac does not .... hmm... maybe I will investigate this later. Thanks! Smiley
7  Help & Tutorials / Help / Problem with stage portraits... [solved] on: July 15, 2011, 09:00:11 PM
Hello everybody, I've been attempting to get stage portraits for my textures into my stage select screen, but it just doesn't seem to be working and I can't for the life of me figure out why.

I am trying to replace the stage portrait for Battlefield with this image:

I have been following //2's guide and have followed all of his instructions. I indexed colours (256 colour... though I also tried 64 colour) before saving, I saved as a PNG, my dimensions are correct, and I have been attempting to replace MenSelmapPrevbase.01.png in Brawlbox: CMPR format, data size 15,552 B. My wii crashes every time I attempt to load the SSS.

This is the only custom image I currently have in common5.pac. I do not currently use a custom SSS and do not have a sc_selmap.pac. I was previously able to get a stage icon working (but have since wiped the common5.pac), but not stage portraits.

I've been having trouble finding tips to make this work and stop crashing my wii. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
8  Help & Tutorials / Help / Question regarding using FitMotionEtc files on: July 07, 2011, 03:30:32 PM
Hello everybody, I'm a noob to Brawl hacking (please bear with me!) and I've been looking through the archives for character hacks to install.

I took a liking to KTH's Baby Mario, so I saved the texture as FitMario03.pcs and saved the FitMarioMotionEtc.pac file to the Mario folder. As far as I understand, the FitMarioMotionEtc.pac file only affects the Baby Mario texture (please correct me if I am wrong! I went into training mode as each Mario costume, and noticed that only the costume I had assigned to Baby Mario had any visible model changes. I don't really know much about how these .pac files work, but I suppose that will come with time).

I also wanted to add diadhammer98's SMBZ hammer Mario suit model , but this requires its own FitMarioMotionEtc.pac file.

I would like to know if there is any way I can have both of these, and if so, how would I go about making that happen?

I use GeckoOS to load the hacks I have installed, and I have BrawlBox0.63d installed. I'm sorry if this question has been answered before or is covered in the stickies (I looked through them and looked through the forum for a bit, but I must have missed it). Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
