1  Help & Tutorials / Help / Re: Gecko OS replacement code not working (PAL) on: March 11, 2014, 06:19:27 PM
I know this may be stupid, but try renaming the folder to RSBE. I'm pretty sure this won't work, but it's worth a shot.
You'll need a different card. Even if it works with the homebrew channel, gecko doesn't support cards larger than 2 gigs.
I had to do both of these (took me a few days as I had to procure another SD card) but finally the in-game texture changed (yes!)

Irritatingly enough though, the character portrait didn't change... are the names InfFace.002.png and MenSelchrFaceB.002.png correct? or has there been some mishap?

Or maybe it's a limitation of the PAL code for Gecko?

Anyway, thank you so much for your help guys, this is awesome! Cheesy

Is your sd card more than 2 gigs, or sdhc?

It is, both of those. I'm aware that it can cause problems with some programs, but is Gecko one of these? The Noob tutorial made no mention of it. There is a list of cards compatible with the Homebrew Channel, many far bigger than 2GBs, but sadly mine (a Samsung) is not contemplated in that list.
I can say though that the card works with the Homebrew Channel without any problems.

You seem to be using a file patch code fork, as this doesn't have the same functionality as the original FPC 3.5.1. Let me go grab you the original PAL FPC and you can try that.

And to answer, yes, using that code causes your disc light to turn on.

edit: Use the first code on this page. http://smashboards.com/threads/pal-present-file-patch-code-3-5-1-pal.306939/

Hope this helps you any.

Tried it, sadly it made no difference... except the light didn't start flashing this time.

That page raises another question though, if you don't mine me asking, it says at the end of the post "I know, I know there is Riivo but Riivo doesn't work on burned DVD's and USB Loaders.
Now it's possible to use it."
I was under the impression Gecko did not work with "back ups" as that's exactly what it says in the wiki. But if that's not the case, I could very easily try the NTSC version which I'm told has a lot more codes for functions like adding new stages without replacing the old ones (which is awesome).

Anyway, thanks for the help guys Smiley

Yes, a 2kb file named RSBP01.gct.

Ah, something I forgot to mention... while I was testing Brawl with Gecko OS, the Wii's blue light was constantly going on and off. I assumed it was just a way to remind me that I was not playing a game under normal conditions (I mean, when I pressed the home button the pointer wouldn't show up, presumably to prevent me from returning to the system menu that way), but that was just a guess, for all I know it could have been flashing to notify that something wasn't working properly?

But if it is normal for it to flash... is it possible to set it so that it doesn't do it? It's rather distracting.

I'm trying to get started with using new textures in Brawl (basic stuff still). I've followed the Noob Tutorial and everything seemed to go fine, Homebrew Channel works with no problem and it boots Gecko OS (which in turn, boots Brawl).

However, the character's texture was not replaced, so I suspect I may have done something wrong in preparing the codes.

I would appreaciate if someone could read through the steps I followed, as I will now describe them, and tell me if I've gone wrong somewhere.

I did everything exactly as instructed up to point 2A6 (downloading the code manager for Gecko OS)

I opened code manager, entered the PAL id (RSBP01) in the respective field, wrote "Super Smash Bros Brawl (PAL)" as game name.

For the actual code, I used what I found on this page:
http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=48546.0

I clicked the "Add a code/comment/category" button in the bottom left, and named it "File Replacement v3.5.5", selected it from the column on the left where it appeared and in the field for the actual code contents I copied and pasted what I found on that page.

I did not type anything in the code comment field as the guide said nothing of it.

I hit the "store modifications" button and noticed that an unmarked check box appeared next to the code's name in the left field. The guide said nothing of it, but I assumed I was supposed to check it so I did.
Finally I saved the code as a txt file and clicked "export to GCT" selecting the proper drive and storing as instructed.

I actually repeated this paragraph (clicking on store modifications, export to GCT as well as "store name/id") several times, just to be sure.

For my test, I used this texture http://forums.kc-mm.com/Gallery/BrawlView.php?Number=7657

I extracted the files from the zip putting them in the SD card in the following directory:

private\wii\app\RSBP01\pf\Fighter\mario

I only relabeled the files from 05 (or 005) to 02 (or 002) so they would appear in place of green Mario, otherwise I did nothing more than unzip them there.

I then put the SD card into my Wii, loaded Gecko OS through the Homebrew channel and Brawl through Gecko... but Mario's textures were unaltered.

So, can anybody tell me if I did something wrong?

Thanks in advance.
5  Help & Tutorials / Help / [Solved] Setting up a dedicated (used) Wii on: February 25, 2014, 05:04:16 PM
Hello everyone, I'm sorta new here. Why "sorta"?

Well a little over a year ago, I registered and made a couple posts asking for directions to get started in the safest non-bricking way possible
http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=55436.0

I did receive help, but then something occurred to me: rather than having to fret and worry about doing something wrong and possibly bricking my Wii, I could just buy another one used and play it safe.

It took much longer than I thought to find one with GameCube ports (darn that family edition crap), in good conditions and at a convenient price but finally here I am.
I would have already gotten started with the instructions I was given in that other thread of mine but the thing is: this Wii too had its firmware upgraded to 4.3E.

Since I don't care about the content that the previous user had on it, should I format the system? Will that set it back to the original firmware from 2009?
Or does formatting only erase the channels and saves? In that case, I'd probably not bother since it already has the Homebrew Channel (and some other thing called Neo Gamma R9 beta 23, dunno what that is but I can venture a guess)

Although... can you guys tell me if formatting gets rid of the family filter? Because it was set on and it doesn't seem possible to set it off (I mean, I can set it to not limit anything, but it still asks me for the pin for certain operations, like changing internet settings).
I get frustrated having to again and again enter 1234 (no joke, that was the password they used. And they couldn't remember it when I asked, had to discover it by tries)

I hope I can get this sorted out soon so I can finally get started Smiley

Apologies for any time that was wasted by this topic, I managed to find out the answers on my own (admittedly, it didn't take too long, at least concerning the firmware issue).

Moderators/Admins feel free to lock or delete this.

Should it be locked and someone with my same problems happens to read it, these are the answers:

Formatting the system does not (sadly) downgrade the firmware.

It's possible to disable the parental control (so long as you do have the pin) by accessing its settings while in safe mode (turn the Wii on while holding + and - and keep holding them as you press A at the initial screen) if you leave the settings without making changes you should be asked if you want to delete the settings altogther.

Thanks!

I hope I don't make you immediately regret you offer because I've read the first two points of the tutorial (1. Popular Homebrew Loading Options and 2. Homebrew Applications. Also skimmed point 3) and I in fact have quite a few questions.

First off, can you tell me which of the options presented there are the most safe?
While apparently less practical, due to the fact that it doesn't install anything option 1.C would seem the least likely to cause any issues... but for all I know it could be the other way around with 1.A (installing Homebrew Channel) being the more stable one (if anything because it's a one time only procedure and also because it allows to install BootMii which is designed to deal with bricking).
Also, if I understand this correctly, option 1.A sort of contains 1.C as it still requires me to get SmashStack as well, right?

This is mostly a curiosity, but... why do the tutorials say to backup the SD, format it and THEN move any stages stored in the Wii to the SD cart and back up those as well? (And should I back them up separately? Or together with the other stages that were already on the SD card before the first back up?)
It seems kind of impractical since I could just move them to it before first backing it up and save up time, so I'm wondering if there's some reason for it (like say, creating a certain file structure within the SD after it was formatted).

The which is safer question applies to point 2 as well. 2.C seems the simpler one (and therefore the least likely to screw up on my part) but for all I know it could be the one that does the most tinkering with the Wii's system.

It seems like, though more complicate, 2.B is the more effective option when it comes to Apps since it can do music and sound effects too (I know I said only stages and characters in my first post, but I sort of consider music as part of a stage and sfx of a character, so yeah I'd like those too ...and PSA movesets as well!)
Is that correct? Or will the new codes you linked to make those work with 2.A as well? And what of 2.C? Does that allow to change those?
Also when you suggest:
There's one thing I have to say though: for some reason the PAL file patch code didn't work for me so I got the NTSC version of the game to avoid any complications.
That would definitely require the HB Channel to load a foreign game, right?

Lastly, I've heard that a method has been found to get modified stages without having to replace the regular ones (but sadly no such things for the characters as of yet, is there?), do I have to pick determined options to do that? (Like say, if it requires the Homebrew Browser I'd have to go with 1.A and 2.C, if it needed just the HB Channel it would mean mandatory 1.A but any option for step 2...)

Ah and I almost forgot. This again is just a curiosity: can you tell me where to find a list of the apps and functionalities that I won't be able to use because of my firware version?
7  Help & Tutorials / Help / Minimal requirements to get started on: January 02, 2013, 06:04:00 PM
Hello everyone, newcomer here.

First off, let me clarify one thing, I'm not making a new thread to go all n00b, asking "tell me how to hack mah wii!!11" without even realizing that there are tutorials for it.

Though I would be glad to receive direct instructions, my intent in making this topic is just to ask which tutorial is the most suited for my needs.

First a foreword: although I've been making stock of new characters and stages for a long time (BTW, congrats on the excellent work setting up this comprehensive database!), I've never actually looked into hacking my Wii, reasoning that it could wait until after the next Nintendo console came along and they stopped doing firmware updates.

Five minutes browsing this board have been sufficient to make me realize this was, in hindsight, quite the moronic plan. So yeah, as you may guess I'm one of the suckers with 4.3E (yes, I'm a PAL user).

I'm also quite the scaredy cat when it comes to these things so here's what I wanted to ask:

What's the least that I absolutely have to do in order to play Brawl with new characters and new stages?

If that's all I want (and not anything fancier, though of course if it doesn't require any additional hacking it would be great) is it possible for me to get it without having to downgrade the firmware and renounce on-line functionalities like the shop? (In the unlikely case that they finally decide to release Megaman 6 and Castlevania on Sega <_<)
And lastly do I have to buy any hardware or can I do this with just software? (Of course I already have an SD card which I can plug in my PC).

Again, I don't expect you guys to pantietly sit down and tutor the poor schmuck step by step (though this schmuck certainly wouldn't turn down such a kind offer Wink), my hope is merely that I could be pointed at a specific tutorial or specific steps of it (if some can be skipped to merely get new characters and stages in Brawl).

More than anything though, I'd like to know which procedure is the least likely to brick my system, naturally (again, scaredy cat).

And that's that, sorry if I got a bit verbose and thanks in advance for any help you may offer me.
