Multiple Stages under one stage selection

I read somewhere that it's possible to load multiple stages under one slot on the menu. Apparently it involves pressing a button while you select it to choose which of your custom stages to use. Does anyone know how this was done or what hack it was? I've tried searching for it, but no luck. They also said there was a button to not load a custom stage, and play the default.
