So I downloaded gimp, I open a picture with it and then  I open another picture with it as well but as a layer how do I erase part of the top layer so that the back layer show?

    Choose the layer that you want to edit, and then use the eraser tool to erase what you don't want.

    I do thaty but when I erase it dosnt show the other layer it just shows white oh btw do you think you could take some pictures for a stage of mine?

    Then you have to give your layer an Alpha Layer.  To do that...

    Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel
