That goes well, as I don't know how to rig skeletons to models... I had to redo my Homebrew model's bones (also in 3DS Max renders) ALL OVER because of this, and now all I'm waiting for is the instruction to rig the bones to the model, 'cause only the bones move, not the model

Your kinda vague on which Brawlbox works or not since you only use "new" or "old" to describe them. I can't figure out which version I can put the .brres in or not. I watched the video tutorials too, but nothing. I'm importing the .brres using Brawlbox v0.65 and I viewed the model in brawlbox afterwards, but it doesn't show up.

Um I got a problem importing my .obj into max.
I get a bunch of "Cannot find" errors for the textures. It loads the model just fine, but it's all white with no textures and no lighting (the model is all black)

drag and drop the textures onto the objects

:/ The MKW method is pretty bad, actually. It has flat shaders, and can't rig to bones (well, excluding the topmost one).

So this is probably a really good question:
Does this work for characters saved in .obj format as well? Because I'm trying to do that, but I'm having a few issues with that.

yes it does, but they wont have any bones at all, so bad idea for that. besides this method is now outdated since there's DAE importing.
