I'm currently creating a texture for Zelda and I was wondering if it's possible to to make her hair "tassels" transparent; if you don't know what exactly I'm talking about please refer to the picture below.

BTY I'm using Photoshop CS4

Yes, they can be made transparent. Zelda's one of the most transparent-able characters, I think.

No black doesn't work;  should I index it?

If you're using Photoshop CS4 the process should be that different than in CS3. you need to go tho the "Channels" Tab that should be  next to the "Layers" tab. In the channels tab there will be a channel called "Index 1". The black on that channel represents where the transparency will be.

Edit: I took a screenshot of my channels tab for my almost invisible zelda:

The easiest thing to do is have whatever you want to be transparent already highlighted (with magic wand or w/e), then go to the Channels tab like syrus64 said, click the Alpha channel and simply delete what you had highlighted. It won't be deleted from picture itself, but it will still be made transparent on the character.

    By the way,

If you erase the tassels, leave some hair at the the top there, or she'll have holes in her head.

Zelda's hair is part of a normal texture, so magenta will not work.  Also, the CMPR (tex#00_14) format textures tend to be quite irritating if you're using SmashBox to edit them.
