I imagine this is relatively common knowledge by now so I apologize if this is a misinformed question, but what are the downsides to using Riivolution over Gecko? Are there any? I remember when Riivolution was relatively new there was something significant that it could not yet support that Gecko could, but I don't remember what it was. I know that, at least in part, I was avoiding making the switch to Riivolution just because I didn't want to take the time to restructure my files...perhaps I was seeing problems that didn't exist to suit my already made choice... I know Riivolution offers soundFX replacement and I've also heard that Riivolution can not be made to work with games loaded from an external hard drive. What other benefits and detriments are there? Thank you

Riivolution: - Support for Fighter.pac - Support for BRSAR sound effect archive - No file size limit? (not really but that's what I heard) - Works for all games - Custom patch sets - All filepaths are completely customizable - No support for USB loaders - RiiFS: edit files over wifi
Gecko File Patch Code: - Brawl only - One unchangeable file set & filepath - Allows removing SD card - No BRSAR sound effect archive support - No Fighter.pac support
That's all I can recall

^ Adding some pros and cons: Riivolution: Doesn't have restrictions with SD cards, you can use any type. Gecko: Only works with SD cards of 2 gb (Can't be SDHC).

Thanks you for the replies I have a couple questions about some of things you listed, BlackJax: 1) When you say 'Support for Fighter.pac" what do you mean? Doesn't Gecko support character .pac files? 2) What are custom patch sets? 3) Is the filesize limit raised for everything? I sure would be nice to raise the resolution of my SSS icons and portraits. 4) What's going on in your signature, there :O Would you mind sharing the name of the anime that scene is from?

Yeah, Gecko supports all pac files, but not fighter.pac in particular. Not sure exactly why but that's just how it is. 2. You can have multiple hack folders. You can have things like Project M, Brawl-, Brawl+, a custom set, etc all on one sd card and switch between them before starting the game. 3. It should be higher for everything, yeah. There's still limits, but less than Gecko. 4. It's from Heaven's Lost Property, originally known as Sora No Otoshimono.

Oh wow, multiple mod sets huh? That's fantastic!
Okay, two more questions and then I think I'm good:
1) I was assuming that you were using the word 'fighter' as a variable stand-in for character names but now I understand that you meant the pac file that's actually called Fighter.pac. What does that pac control?
2) Does the alternate file loader code work normally with Riivolution? I don't understand much about the code itself but I know it references specific directories which makes me wonder how compatible it would be.

For the second question. No, the Alternate File Loader code doesn't work, because Riivolution doesn't use the Patch code of Gecko.

1. It's the moveset file for the generic actions/attributes for all characters. 2. Nope

2. Nope
Is the code compatible with Riivolution at all or do I need to use Gecko in order to use it?

There's just no point in using it with Riivolution. It won't do anything since the files are already patched. The code has to be used with Gecko since Gecko doesn't actually patch the files itself.

I feel like you're talking about the file replacement code. I'm talking about the code that allows you to load alternate directories on the fly by holding down a button combination when you select something in game. For example, if I select Final Destination but am holding L when I do so it might load the stage file from pz/stages/melee/ instead of pf/stages/melee. Are you saying that Riivolution has a built in way of doing this or are we thinking of two different codes?

Anyway, that code for the Alternate Stage Loader, doesn't work with Riivolution, only the Stage Expansion...

Oh, I thought you were talking about the replacement code. No, Riivolution doesn't have that built-in, so that code should work with it. Anyway, that code for the Alternate Stage Loader, doesn't work with Riivolution, only the Stage Expansion...
You sure? I don't see why it wouldn't work with Riivo.

I'm having a difficult time finding information on this; it seems like every place it's mention there are people asking the question but no one answering. Are you positive that it does not work? If so, do you know what causes it to be incompatible?

Well, I was using that code with Gecko, but when I change to Riivo I read in a tutorial about that code that it doesn't work with Riivolution... I tested it with the correct buttons and it doesn't work... at least for me.
