Tutorial for actually creating a texture?

OK, so I'm finally trying my hand at actually making a texture, but I'm a complete noob at image editing software (my experience pretty much ends at making CSPs) so I was wondering if there were any good tutorials out there on how to use image editing software (preferably Gimp) gimp for editing textures (what methods/tools are useful, etc.) I realize it's a weird request, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding tutorials that are relevant to editing Brawl textures, so any help would be great. Here's a guide I made a while ago that takes you through the creation of your first texture.  It's for Photoshop, but you should be able to apply it to GIMP.  As far as getting acquainted with the software, just screw around and see what looks nice.
