Okay so I got my .tga file in my "new files" folder. I have both the ntcompress.exe and TexConv.exe files in my [MeowMix] Cupash folder containing all the goodies that came with the download. I clicked step_2create.bat to make my three folders (info/menu/system) work. I renamed the common_whatever.pac file to common5.pac. Then I copied the 3 folders to the appropriate spot on my SD card. I load up brawl and get to the Character select and my will froze and did the loud beep noise. Help? =)

it probably means that you either:
a. didnt index your colors correctly
b. have too many files
c.  have a corrupt common5

you could always edit the common5 in brawlbox....way easier too

Well I didn't index anything, I was just trying to install a CSP that came with one of the textures I downloaded. And I was only trying to install one of them, so I don't think it's too many files. The common5 file I had came with the Meow Mix Cupash download, so I wouldn't think it's corrupt. If you could direct me to t brawlbox tutorial, I'll take your word on it that it's easier haha.

umm....well for brawl box do this.

open common5
expand sc_charselect.pac (something close to that)
expan the archive after miscdata_30 (should have a blue icon)
find the folder for the character ur changing. (open up the folder and open the textures folder)
right click the flie and hit replace...select ur file...done.

which file replacement code are you using?  mine crashed without the newest one

At the time I tried I'm not sure if I was using the right code or not. The code I have on there now is like 3.5 something? (probably just made that number up lol). I got the sound swaps to work on the new code I got today though, so I'll give the CSP's another try and see if they work.

Here are a few tips to consider.

1: Make sure that your portraits were properly indexed, and do not use more colors than the set palette.

2a: You can use sc_selcharacter.pac all by itself for your custom portraits.  Doesn't require a game reset when edits are made.

2b: Certain archives require compression.  The file, sc_selcharacter.pac, has to be compressed.  Inside that file is a PAC archive, char_bust_tex_lz77.  That archive isn't compressed, but the BRRES archives that it contains do need to be compressed.

3: Make sure that your file isn't corrupted.

4a: Check which version of the file patch code you're using.

4b: If you're using a PAL Wii, then the game will always crash with the custom portraits; the latest PAL file replacement code doesn't support CSPs.

You're kidding, right?  When I say reset, I mean reboot the game.

When using common5.pac, any changes made to that file will not take effect, unless you reset the game.  That can be quite a hassle to put up with.  Fortunately, changes made to sc_selcharacter.pac will take effect without the need of a game reset.

then how is it advantageous at all to use the sc_selcharacter instead of the common5....when would you want a change in the file and not need to reset the game....?

Lol I'm using a NTSC Wii and an NTSC copy of the game (backup off of my 1TB External Hard Drive using Wiiflow).

So it would be better to use the common5.pac right? I think I'm going to use Brawl Box instead of the Meow Mix thingy. It appears to be a little easier to not mess up haha.
