You may want to keep the info below in mind.

*When replacing portraits on sc_selcharacter.pac, that file must use less memory than normal, or else your game will crash.

*BrawlBox doesn't recognize perfect magenta (#ff00ff) as a transparent color.  It instead focuses on the Alpha Layer of your portrait.

*Where are you placing the file on your SD card?  Look at the directories below to know what goes where.

    sc_selcharacter.pac - [SD drive]\private\wii\app\RSBE\pf\menu2\

    common5.pac - [SD drive]\private\wii\app\RSBE\pf\system\

Pretty much everything that mnsg said.

You did save the file right? After I put in my CSP's I always open it up again with BrawlBox to make sure that they're there.

    alpha layers?

An Alpha Layer allows an image to utilize transparency.  A checkerboard background represents transparency when using The GIMP or Photoshop.  Without an Alpha Layer, transparency can't be done on an image.

For The GIMP users, go to "Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel" to add a new Alpha Layer onto an image.

On a side note, Photoshop CS3 and CS4 does transparency differently for the TarGA (.tga) images.
