Help & Tutorials / Help / Re: need to know what programs is best to use for Vertexing

If there is a better import plug-in than Blender 2.5's default—and you can find it—I'd really appreciate it. I've looked all over. The general consensus seemed to be that everyone just uses Max to do any vertex hacking nowadays. Actually, now that I think about it, all that should really be necessary for us Blenderites would be a package—much like MeleeMaster500's Brawlscript Easy Vertex Pack—containing the character models in .obj format. Basically just the first half of the Vile's Vertex Box tutorial. That is, assuming Blender can open up those .objs correctly.

Y'see, the problem with using Blender isn't so much the interface, or the complexity of it—it's actually a fantastic program once you learn the ins and outs of it! The problem is the fact that it can't seem to import .dae files correctly. Maybe I'm doing something wrong here, but I've been unable to use Das Donkey Vertex Box v. 2.2 OR Vile's Vertex Box simply because of the steps requiring the use of .dae files. I'd be "vertexing" like a maniac if I could get over this one tiny hump.
So to answer the question: If you want to vertex hack, buy 3ds Max 8. If you want to vertex hack for free, crack 3ds Max 8. =/

An intriguing concept to be sure. Next gen Rob gave me a chuckle. I would make one slight change, however.
I feel like it would make more sense for Samus to be given hyper beam. Of course, nothing's stopping you from giving her a Phazon suit texture on top of that, but PED suit might make even more sense. Both were able to utilize hyper beam, but the PED suit let her use it at any time, while the Phazon suit would only work within close proximity to specific batches of phazon.

Hmmm... that is an odd result you got there. The only thing that stands out as odd or different from me is that you're using Paint.Net and Windows 7. I went ahead and downloaded Paint.Net and quickly reproduced the problem by saving the file as a .png with default settings and loading it into Brawl Box. I then saved the texture as a .tga with the default settings, and it worked fine. Whenever you run into that problem, try saving as a .tga file.

I may not be the best person to answer, as I'm very new myself, but I'll do what I can.
A-1: I did a quick Google search on the error that you got when messing with his backpack (Google is your friend). From what I can tell, it just means the file is corrupted in some way. It might be a good idea to list what versions of the programs you're using. To my knowledge, only the latest version of Vertex Box will work without Anim8or. Make sure you're using the latest release. You may also want to mention what version of 3ds Max you're running, as that could help people pinpoint the problem.
B-1: "Some weird cut, flip, and highlight thing" is kind of a vague description. Could you, maybe, upload and link to some screenshots that display what it is you're talking about? I'm assuming you're using Brawl Box, and I know that, when in preview mode, clicking on a texture in the list on the left will highlight said texture with a greenish color. That color is only to show you which parts of the model belong to that texture set and will not show up in-game.
B-2: Again, a picture here might be more helpful. A screenshot of the texture in Brawl Box would be handy since we'll be able to look at your format settings.
B-3: Those are the different formats that Brawl uses for it's textures. When looking at, and loading images in Brawl Box, you should see a few bits from that list like CMPR and IA4. I believe the reason you were linked there was because they thought you might have your images formatted incorrectly, and Brawl Box was not reading them the way it should. Or something. Give us a shot of what things look like on your end, and we might be able to lend more assistance.
C-1: Get the latest version of Gecko and see if you still have this problem. If it still doesn't work, then ask for help. =P

I'm actually having a very similar problem changing Peach into Daisy. Her eyes are giving me that result when I try to change them. I am, however, using Blender to do the editing. I send the .3ds to Anim8or, convert it into a .obj, send that to Blender, change it, export as .obj, put it back into Anim8or, convert it into .3ds again, then insert it into the .mdl0. I did this very same technique with her hair and face, and it worked flawlessly. I've yet to figure out what it is. You may just be getting unlucky with what you're choosing to edit. Try messing with Peach's hair or face and see if you still have this problem.

Help & Tutorials / Help / Peach and her Amazing, Exploding Eye
|
on: May 09, 2010, 07:53:04 PM

So I recently took it upon myself to answer a request and try out vertex hacking for the very first time. The request was to turn Peach into Daisy. I've gotten pretty far in making her accurate, including making her face the correct shape. As you can see, however, there are some gaps left under her eyes. Daisy has much larger eyes than Peach, so my original plan was to stretch those polygons that make up her eyes down, as well as a little tweak to the textures. I was pretty confident that I'd be able to close it up and leave no visible seams, until I actually attempted it. Below is the result: Her eye explodes. I noticed that DrPanda is having what appears to be a very similar problem; and, while I could very well find my answer over there, I decided to create this thread in the event that they aren't related. My process for vertex hacking thus far has been to export the model and vertices, have Vertex Box create a .3ds out of them, use Anim8or to convert it into a .obj, put that into Blender for editing, export the results as a .obj, use Anim8or again to convert it back into a .3ds, and finally, insert the changes into the .mdl0. It's an arduous process, but as displayed above, it worked perfectly up until I tried changing her eyes. My question is basically this: Are Peach's eyes, like Toon Link's hat, unable to be vertex hacked at this time, is this a problem with the fact that I'm attempting to put a vertex hack on top of a vertex hack—even though I'm modifying a different set of vertices—or is it something else entirely? Any assistance will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Your Pits are awesome. No lie. You're right about the red and black combo being too prevalent, though.
I love the tips of his feathers being white. You should try adding white to the tips of all his feathers to really set him apart (Take a look at the patterns on a bird's wings for inspiration/reference). I'm not digging the feet so much. I think the red is a little too saturated there and doesn't match up so well with the rest of his outfit. Tone 'em down a bit so they better match the crimson color of his wings and toga. This should help weight him to the floor a bit better and create a better overall balance. Of course you can still toss in some of the brighter red for balance since it's present on his bracers, but keep it as trim instead of the main color. Maybe try a white laurel too. Right now, the pink isn't meshing very well for me.
Keep it up, though! When I manage to get a working Wii again, these are going on my SD card for sure. =D
